    1. [mogentry] H. H. Walters Diary #2
    2. Lori
    3. March 4, 1873 Tuesday Billy Henderson came to my school just before noon and informed me of the shooting of my brother at 4 P. M. the day before. I dismissed and rode home with him. Found my mother and remaining brothers at home in deep distress. Rode on to Maysville and found the coroner holding an inquest over George's body at the courthouse. Here I learned that he had been killed the evening before at the house of the widow of David Groomer in the northeast part of the county. He and John Thompson, deputy sheriffs, had arrested Wm. Groomer, one of the widow's sons and during the proceedings, George was shot. The shooting was charged against Christopher and David Groomer, brothers of Wm., and they left the country. A reward of $500.00 was offered for their apprehension at the time. I felt very much depressed by the turn affairs had taken. March 5, 1873 Wednesday A large crowd attended George's funeral today. His remains had been taken to the M. E. parsonage the evening before. Shortly after noon the coffin was taken to the M. E. Church and the funeral sermon preached by Rev. G. S. Stocking. The interment took place at the cemetery northwest of town about the center of the enclosure. I rode back to my shcool in the evening. ++++++++ Lori

    1. [mogentry] Franklin B. EARL
    2. >From The Luther Register, Friday, August 30, 1901: "F. B. Earl of near Garden has gone to Gentry County, Mo., on a visit of three or four months to his old home and friends." Luther is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma County, while Garden was just over the line in the southwest corner of Logan County. A number of Gentry Co. families came to this area, where the Unassigned Lands [opened in 1889], the Iowa lands [opened in 1891] and the Kickapoo Lands [opened in 1895] converged. I found Franklin B. EARL on the 1900 census in Iowa Township, Logan Co., near families whose children attended the Garden school. He was single, born Oct. 1859 in MO. His father was born in NY, his mother in MO. He owned his farm, with a mortgage, but I didn't find him on the index to land records so conclude that he probably bought his farm from the homesteader. I have not managed to link him with any of the other families who came to this area from Gentry Co. Does anyone recognize him? Sharon McAllister

Posted on: Gentry County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mo/Gentry/10382 Surname: Coffey, Campbell, Litton ------------------------- In researching my Coffey line, I have come to a dead end with my GGrandfather Lawson H. Coffey. The following is what I have found. Sources: 1860 Census, Gentry Co. Mo. & Albany Missouri Ledger, Aug 19 1904. My GGrandfather: Lawson Howard Coffey b. 16 Aug 1820 Burke Co., NC, d. 7 Aug 1904, Gentry Co., Mo. Burried Jenning Cem. Gentry Co., MO In 1850 he married wife 1. Mary (Polly) Adoline Litton, b.1827 d.1857, Alanthus, Mo. They had 2 sons. Columbine & Noah. In 1856 they moved from IN. to Alanthus, Gentry Co., MO. Polly died in 1857. I don't know where they were married, most likely IN. Lawson then married 2. Eliza Ann Campbell (not sure but think Eliza is short for Elizabeth.) on 15 Aug 1858. Eliza: b 1836, NC. d. 1915. I'm assuming she died in Alanthus. According to sources, they had eight children. 5 boys, 3 girls. The source for this is the Albany Missouri Ledger, Lawson died 19 Aug 1904. His funeral was led by Elder J.H. Coffey. buried Jennins Cem. (I have photos of the grave) I know for sure one boy: George Lafayette (my grandfather) b. 26 May 1865 Alanthus, Mo. possible other children: Mary Francis, Columbine, Noah. According to the 1860 census, Gentry Co., Mo. (I can't find this info, it was given to me by Sandy, my new found cousin) in 1860 Lawson Coffee___? m. (spelled wrong) age 39, Farmer RE 1600P. 150b. IN Eliza Coffee (2nd W f. (Was Elizabeth Ann Campbell b. NC Columbine Coffee age 9 m (nickname: Lum: b IN Noah Coffee age 7 m. B. IN (all names are actually Coffey) So it looks like: Lawson m. Polly 1850 had Columbine abt. 1851 Moved to Alanthus, MO 1856 had Noah abt. 1857 Polly died 1857 possibly from childbirth. Don't know. m. Eliza Ann Campbell 1858 had 6 more kids 1,George Lafayette 26 May 1865 Alanthus, Mo d. 7 July, 1945.St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO. m. Elsie Jane Randleman 12 Aug 1907, St. Joseph, MO. 2.Mary Francis m. Perry Martin Walker; 2nd h.David Boatwright, moved to Gunther, OK. 3rd. h. John Barton -Baptist Minister. Moved back to MO. d. 1925. It's said that she was Stanberry, MO's first librarian. +4 more children, names unknown. Lawson died 1904 Alanthus, Mo. and buried there. Jennings Cem. Eliza died sometime in 1915. Assuming Alanthus, Mo. Lawson's son George Lafayette had 2 sons. William Lawson Coffey b.21 May 1908, Alanthus, Mo. d.24 Sept. 1978, Sun City, Ca. 2 dtrs. Susan Leilani Coffey (me), Donna Jean Coffey-Bergmeister Otto Marion Coffey b. 4 June 1910, Alanthus, Mo. d. 2 May 1971 San Francisco, C. 1 dtr. Janis Lorraine 2 sons. Douglas Alvin, Steven Randal, The Coffey line ends right here. Otto's children never married and Williams dtr's took new names. Both William & Otto attended Stanberry High School. That's it, I need info on Lawson & Eliza's kids to research futher.
