    3. 1889 The winter was short and very mild and the summer was rather cool. Crops were good, as the rainfall was sufficient and not enough to do injury. My family spent the winter in Stanberry and came to Amity in the spring. It became evident that the hardware business in Amity would not give employment to both Edward and myself and I secured my old situation it McFall. We rented a house of Samuel Stephens but gave possession again on July 1st as he had sold out in the meantime. We staid at my mother's until Aug. 10, when we went to Stanberry. I attended the Institute at Albany for two weeks. Leaving my family at Stanberry, I began my school work at McFall in September. Before Christmas, my brother-in-law, E. F. Lilly bought the hardware stock of the Lewis Bros. at McFall. I assisted in the invoice and boarded with them after they moved down. Previous to this, I had been stopping with F. M. Gist's. On Dec. 16th, my brother and I dissolved partnership. I may continue teaching for some time, but I expect to engage again in the hardware business. Owing to the helpless condition of my wife's father, my family must remain in Stanberry for the present. At no time in life have I found myself more influenced by circumstances over which I have no control. Jan 5, 1890. ++++++++++++ Pasted in the lower right-hand corner is a newspaper clipping: "Notice of Dissolution" Amity, MO Dec. 16, 1889. There's a short paragraph giving details. I believe Edward Walters continued with this hardware store until his death in or around 1935. Ephraim Fisher remained in that condition until his death in 1896. A few months prior to his death, he was moved to Asylum #2 in St. Joseph, MO.

    3. 1888 The winter was short, but severe. Heavy rains fell during the spring and summer, damaging hay and small grain very much. Other crops were fair. The measles broke out in our school about the 1st of April and reduced the attendance greatly. The school closed on May 23rd after a term of eight months, during which there was no vacation and but one holiday, Thanksgiving. After school closed, my family went to Stanberry for a short visit, while I went home to recruit on the farm. While at McFall, Dell was with us and George was with his grandparents at Stanberry. Edward wished to leave the farm to enter business and I concluded to quit the schoolroom for a time, at least, and go with him. On July 1st we commenced business at Amity, MO, having bought out the hardware stock of A. Beardry. Edward made a sale of personal property on Nov. 14th and on the 27th following, moved with mother to Amity, having purchased the house formerly owned by George Lloyd. Since coming to Amity, my family have spent more of their time at Stanberry owing to the sickness(?) of Mrs. Walters father who is now bedridden from the effects of a paralytic stroke. I may resume my old calling at some future time, but at present I am kept busy as a member of the firm of Wallets Bros. My mother has rented her farm and is not at all likely to return to it. During the year, our health has been fair. Jan 6, 1889. ++++++++++++++

    3. 1887 The winter was short but rather severe followed by a very early spring. Farmers planted considerable corn before the middle of April and this made the best corn crop. The season was very much like the preceding one being very dry. A severe drouth in the same localities that had suffered the preceding year caused much inconvenience to farmers in those parts. Crops in Missouri were fair. After closing my school at Fairport, I moved our household goods down to my mother's where I spent the summer . The house we had occupied took fire and burned down on the afternoon of March 4th. Cause, a defective flue. Mrs. Walters and the children spent the summer at Stanberry where she attended school until taken with the measles which proved rather severe to her and the children. Her eyesight was impaired for three months by reason of her sickness. I spent the summer working on the farm and doing some insurance work, making two trips in search of a situation for the coming school year. I secured one for myself and Mrs. Walters at McFall, MO. Being in Gentry county where we had both formerly taught, we could do better than we could have done at a distance, owing to the condition of her eyesight. We disposed of our land in the spring and at present have no real estate. Our intention is to follow teaching together for several years as such a course seems to be best suited to us. Her health has been completely restored. Dell was quite sick for a week just before Christmas, but is now well again. Our school has three departments this year and we have the upper and middle rooms. Jan 1, 1888 ++++++++++++++++++

    3. I am looking for any Querry's from the 1700-1800's. I am descended from William and Mary Jane Groomer m 27 feb 1841 Clinton County, Missouri They lived in Gentry County most of their marriage in Mcfall or Niggerheal. (I have their marriage license) it is said that he was buried in the Niggerheal Cemetary (does anyone know the location of this?) abt 1860 and she was burried in Daniel Cemetary 1884. She was raised in Kearney part of the time in the birth home of Jesse James (her father Jacob Gromer sold the house to the James). I am unsure of any of Williams ancestors. There was a man named William listed in the Revolutionary War pension records that resided in Ray county (I am wondering if this could be his grandfather) ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APRECIATED JANAE QUERRY-GOUGH

    3. 1886 The opening of the year found me in Valparaiso busily engaged in pursuit of my studies. The winter proved to be short, but very severe, being another of a series of very cold winters. Spring opened early and was very favorable for putting in crops. The rain fall for the Upper Mississippi was very light and during the summer a very destructive drouth prevailed. I never saw such utter desolation before as was to be seen in Central Iowa. In August, I completed the Scientific Course and returned home having engaged a school in Fairport, Missouri before coming home. The school is a graded one, and is located in a good community. Moving my family to Fairport, I began teaching Sept. 6; Miss Hallie Brant having charge of the primary department. My venture in attending school is likely to be of great benefit to me though it was expensive. While I was gone, my farm did not yield any income above expenses. At present, I intend to dispose of my land; pay off my debts; and put my savings on interest. My wife intends assisting me in school-work in the near future. During the year, the labor troubles occupied public attention and how to reconcile the conflicting interests of capital and labor, is one of the perplexing questions of the hour. My judgment prompts me to be somewhat conservative and not to encourage any of the extreme measures advocated by many. ++++++++++++
