Dear Lois, I hope you don't mind that I'm posting this reply to the list. If it's on the list it will be archived in case some other researcher needs the information. The first section of information is from the record of "Births and Baptisms" at St. John's Mantels United Church of Christ. (It's really touching to read through the first two sections and to see the young lives getting started and then to read the 3rd section and see how and when they died.) Christopher H. Kruwell and Katherine Elizabeth (Bergbreder) had a child Baptized in 1843 but at that time the children's names were not listed. Maria Engel Kruwel served as a witness for the Baptism of a Holtman/Vosskuhler baby soon after that. 7-28-1845 Maria Margareth Kruel was born to Ludwig Kruel and Anna Catherine (Lullmann) 9-18-1845 Marie Christine Kruel was born to Christopher H. Kruel and Maria E. (Toerner) 2-25-1850 Johann Wilhelm Kruel was born to Gerhard H. Kruel and Anna M. (Rolf) Hermann H. Kruel was one of the witnesses at Baptism. 9-14-1850 Gerhard Heinrich Kruel was born to Hermann H. Kruel and Catherine (?) Gerhard H. Kruel was the witness at Baptism. 10-10-1852 Johann Wilhelm Kruel was born to Hermann Kruel and Katharina (Pohler) 3-14-1855 Anna Maria Kruel was born to Hermann and Katharine (different spelling with an e instead of an a but maybe just because of the German-to- English transcriber) 9-2-1857 Johann Kruel was born to Hermann and Katharine. Johann Kruel served as witness at the Christmas Eve Baptism. 10-12-1859 Marie Elise was born to Hermann and Katharine. Marie Holtgrewe from my wife's family was the witness at the Baptism. 2-15-1861 Hermann Heinrich Kruel was born to Gerhard Kruel and Marie W. (Hemans). Hermann Kruel witnessed the Baptism. 2-15-1862 Maria Wilhelmina Hamann was born to Gottlob Hamann and Ernestine (Huellig) 8-4-1862 Anna Katherine Marie Kruel was born to Gerhard Kruel and Marie Wilhelmine (Hemans). The Baptism was witnessed by Katharine Kruel. Most of the men of the church were in the 54th Enrolled Missouri Militia but I guess these births prove that they weren't off to the war all of the time. 3-23-1870 Heinrich Wilhelm Edward Kruel was born to Gerhard Heinrich Kruel and Marie Wilhelmine (Hemans). Wilhelm Kruel served as a witness. 1-24-1873 Ernestine Kroell was born to Carl Kroell and Alwine (Gehlert). 2-25-1873 Fritz Oscar Kruel was born to Gerhard H. and Marie W. (Hemans). 3-30-1874 Katherine Louise Kruel was born to Johann Heinrich Kruel and Anna M. E. (Maune) 10-24-1875 Katherine Marie Kruel wa born to Johann Heinrich and Anna. 2-11-1877 Anna Elise Char. Kruel was boen to Johann H. and Anna. That's it for births up to 1880 which is probably the time period which interests you. There is a Hemann family which also had several children during the 1870s - They were Wilhelm Louis Hemann and Amalie Marie (Woelke). Marriage records show the following: 11-2-1856 Gerhard Kruel witnessed the wedding of J. A. Ehlers and K. M. E. Theimann 11-6-1861 Hermann Kruel witnessed the marriage of my wife's ancestors, F. H. Grote and K. W. Wismann 11-1-1864 Wilhelm Louis Hehmann married Marie Elise Massmann 9-20-1871 Wilhelm Louis Hehmann married Amalie Marie Woelke. 4-3-1873 Johann Heinrich Kruel married Anna Marie Elise Maune. In the Death and Burial Records we have: Hehmann, Elisha 3-7-1819 4-5-1881 Hehmann Hermann H. 7-23-1831- 3-21-1911 Heman, Louis 6-1-1841 5-23-1914 Kruel, Amanda S. 1-1-1887 1-29-1950 Kruel, William F. 12-14-1881 4-20-1967 The couple above is buried at St. John's Mantels but funeral records are at the Zion U.C.C. in Union, MO so they had probably transfered their membership to Zion. If you piece these folks together and need for me to check some surnames other than Hehmann and Kruel, let me know. 2. I'll bet you already know that there are still Kruels in the area. They are good people who are very interested in family history and supportive of St. John's and the cemetery upkeep. If you haven't talked to them yet, it would be worth doing.
