    1. [MOFRANKL-L] TO ALL TO RESPONDED TO MY REQUEST
    2. Why a helpful group this is! Thanks to all of you who responded to my query for addresses and information on Franklin Co. I received many replies and for those who asked who I was researching in Franklin County, here they are: My late mother-in-law's father was John Altemueller. He married Agnes Bentmann in 1907. We had thought they were married in Washington, MO but in looking at their wedding picture, it has the photographer logo as GERHARD SISTERS, ST. LOUIS. I wonder if the Gerhard Sisters could have had a studio in Washington or if the families had actually moved to St. Louis where I know they lived later. Agnes' birth certificate lists her parents as Helen Hoelacher and Joseph Bentmann. Agnes and John Altemueller were both born in 1879. They were Catholics. They spoke both German and English which makes me wonder if their parents were the immigrants and from which port they would have traveled to this area. I have heard that some of the German immigrants had come into New Orleans. It would have been an easy matter to travel up the Mississippi. Later they had an Annie Spears living with them that was supposed to be John Altemueller's mother so evidently she remarried a Spears at sometime prior to her death in the early 1940s. Again, thanks for your help. Doris Georgetown, TX

    1. [MOFRANKL-L] REQUEST FOR FRANKLIN CO. ADDRESS
    2. Can someone please furnish me with the address of the Historical Society in Franklin Co. Where is the county seat? As a researcher in Texas working on ancestors that lived in the Washington, MO area a century ago, I would appreciate some basic help. These families, Altemueller, Bentmann, Hoelacher and perhaps Spears, were German I know, and most likely Catholics. Does anyone know what church a German Catholic in this area would most likely attend, 1879-1905? Any clue and opinions are greatly appreciated. Doris

    1. [MOFRANKL-L] Tragic accident in Washington, MO
    2. Hi!! The following story is about my husband's grandmother, Anna Boehm Rother. It occurred in Washington, MO as the result of a carelessly thrown firecracker: One of the most terrible accidents that ever befell this community happened on the afternoon of 4 July 1890. Mrs. John Rother, while on her way to the fairgrounds with her three little children, discovered her dress to be on fire. She immediately started across the street to Mrs. K. Schulte's store screaming for assistance. She ran back to where she had left her children, and the flames having in the meantime eaten to her flesh and becoming crazed with the intense pain, she ran to and fro until she fell exhausted. The clothes were burned off her body with the exception of her corset, and the handle of her parasol, which she preservingly held, was burned in two. All efforts were made by some men who came to her assistance to save her, but their efforts were in vain as the flames had already done their deadly work. The accident was the most horrible that has ever occurred here and the scene is said to have been heart-rending. The poor lady lived until Saturday morning when she breathed her last. She was the wife of Mr. John Rother, and at the time of her death had reached the age of 26 years. Her remains were buried on Sunday afternoon. The bereaved husband and three children mourn her untimely death and have the sympathy of the entire community. This was reported in the Union Tribune, Die Washingtoner Post and Franklin Cty. Tribune. I was wondering if there are any descendants of Mrs. Schulte who could tell me the exact location of her store. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Cathy of St. Louis PS Another article stated that this accident happened on the corner of Fourth and Jefferson Streets in Washington.

    1. [MOFRANKL-L] An invitation to tour...
    2. Dorris Keeven
    3. the pioneer German settlement of Gottfried Duden at Lake Creek! The Washington Historical Society and the Dutzow Verein are sponsoring a fall tour of the historic sites of the Duden Settlement in the Dutzow area, offering a rare opportunity to visit the farm of Gottfried Duden author of the famous Report of a Journey to the Western States and other pioneer Germans that led huge emigration Societies hoping to create a German State of Missouri. Enjoy the fall weather and a scenic drive to see where it all began! In 1829, a German named Gottfried Duden published a book in Germany called Report on a Journey to the Western States of North America in the years 1824,25,26,and 1827. This book has often been cited as the "most important piece of emigration literature ever written." It is what brought hundreds of German emigrants to the beautiful Missouri River valleys west of St. Louis from 1830 on. Many of these German pioneers in turn, wrote their own letters home also urging their friends and family to come. One can visit the farm of Jacob Haun, where on "Duden’s Hill" much of the inspirational "Report" was written. Also learn about the original Village of Dutzow founded by the "Baron" von Bock and his Berlin Society in 1832, meant to be a "strictly German village". A majestic stone barn sits upon the hillside on the farm of Friedrich "Far West" Muench, founder of the Giessen Emigration Society. Muench was a leader in the grape culture in Missouri and largely responsible for the continuation of German emigration to Missouri. His brother George Muench ran a water powered sawmill on his farm in 1850 of which traces can still be seen today. Also open nearby will be the historic St. Vincent de Paul Church begun by German emigrants in 1835, which sits majestically upon a picturesque overlook of the Missouri River valley. Dutzow is located approx. 50 miles west of St. Louis at the intersections of scenic Hwy. 94 and Hwy TT. One can take Interstate 70 west to the Foristell exit and go south on Hwy T to Hwy. TT. Or follow Hwy. 100 west to Washington to the Historical Society at 4th and Market Streets and then cross the 47 Bridge. The Missouri wienstrasse is especially beautiful in autumn. All of the sites will be open to visitors from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday October 22nd. Participants may begin their tour at the Washington Historical Society (Fourth & Market) where they will receive a brochure giving detailed directions to each of the sites and a general history of this famous early German settlement. Guides will be available at each site with additional handouts and to answer questions. The entire fall tour is out of doors, does not include the interior of any homes and participants are urged to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. This is an opportunity to visit properties that are privately owned and not generally open to the public. The tour of six stops takes approximately two hours to complete. The tour is free and everyone is invited. For more details or questions contact the Washington Historical Society at whsocty@usmo.com or the Dutzow Verein at history@usmo.com auf Wiedersehn!

    3. I noticed that you have Bell and Klingensmith listed on your surname list. I have William Bell, born 1750, died about March 03, 1802 at St Andre Del Misuri (Missouri), Spanish Territory. Married to Barbara CLINGENSMITH or KLINGENSCHMIDT about 1773. I know they had a least one son name Mordecai who married Hannah GRAHAM, Does this sound familiar?
