CHARITON COURIER -- Keytesville, Chariton County, Missouri -- 23 November 1878 RUCKER, Capt. A.L.F., an old MO. Rev., man, and at one time owner of a dozen boats, blew out his brains on the 13th at the house of Dr. COMSTOCK in Kansas City. Capt. Rucker had been suffering greatly from consumption and becoming convinced that his disease was incurable, he took this speedy method of ending his sufferings. _________________________ THE FORT SCOTT DAILY MONITOR -- Thursday, 14 November 1878 ~~~~~~~ SUICIDE ~~~~~~~ Acting City Marshal Basemann, received a telegram from Kansas City last night, stating that CAPT. RUCKER, brother of CITY MARSHAL, C.T. RUCKER, of Fort Scott, had shot and killed himself in that city, at six o'clock, Tuesday night. Mr. RUCKER had been suffering from consumption, and had gone to Kansas City under the care of Dr. Comstock, in order to effect a cure if possible. No cause is assigned for the act beyond that of MENTAL and PHYSICAL SUFFERING and despairing of ever becoming well again, as he had repeatedly said that he would destroy himself if he did not improve in health. His body will be brought to Fort Scott for burial... -------------------- THE FORT SCOTT DAILY MONITOR -- Sunday, 17 November 1878 The remains of CAPT. L.F. Several of you requested this (these). Perhaps you can go take a look for yourselves. Let me know, please, what does and doesn't work. I'm copying herewith what I posted to a different rootsweb list. -DHF ============== Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 10:03:12 -0600 (CST) From: David H Finke <dfinke@coin.org> To: MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Fink(e) Cemetery in Berger, MO Sorry to be late getting back to all those who asked for the URLs for finding what I've found. Here they are, but be sure that as you copy them, you have them (each) all in one line [no spaces]. The Internet is pretty unforgiving that way. It doesn't know "You know what I mean," most of the time." I think I used several different programs. One of them (which someone here gave me) is this: http://geonames.usgs.gov/gnisform.html But the actual screen shots that show me the cemetery in topo, and my great grandparents house-on-the-bluff in aerial photo, are these (sorry I didn't write which is which), each of which is given as "1 KM north of Berger, MO - http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=11&T=2&X=1612&Y=10706&Z=15&W=0 and http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=10&T=1&X=3222&Y=21413&Z=15&W=0 Even if you get the numbers mixed up, perhaps you can get there with the "terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/" part of the URL. Wish I could help more. If somebody really gets stuck and wants to see it, send me a private note and I'll stick a print-out into the mail. Best wishes, -DHF David Hadley Finke Columbia, MO 65203
Is anyone reading this a descendant or know of Elijah Monroe Spradling or his brother, Joseph Columbus Spradling? They lived near Beaufort from 1862 until their deaths. Elijah died Oct 12, 1890 in Union, MO. Joseph died Jan 26, 1900, also in Franklin Co. The 2 brothers were born in Tennessee, Elijah was born, Aug 18, 1824, in what is now Marshall Co., TN. Paul H. My father's father's father was a civil war veteran (Union: 31st Mo. Vol. Inf.) who was buried on land that he farmed after the war, at Berger, MO. He was Henry (Heinrich) Finke, and his son Edward had the land after he, and my great-grandmother Mary (Maria) Finke lived with them until her death in 1932. Edward was father to Elda, who married Forrest Forderhase, still living in Berger, who still owns that land. This weekend I was looking at a USGS mapping program on the Internet, and in curiosity homed in on Berger (you can just give a town name; don't have to know coordinates), and went looking at the old family land. As I zoomed in to the highest resolution (1 inch = 200 yards) there on the topographical map, to my amazement, popped up the words "Fink Cem." on the wooded bluff to the north of the land where their house was. (The house is still there, clearly visible in the comparable aerial photo, right above the railroad tracks on the bluff, first building north of town.) This burial site had been known in the family (and perhaps elsewhere?) as "The Indian Mound," and indeed when several years ago we were prowling up there, we saw what appears to be an ancient burial site, pre-European. We haven't yet found great-grandfather's grave, tho we see stones of people with cousins' names (e.g. "Zeugin"). Others are buried in the more accessible St. John's cemetery nearer to town, on County "B". But this is the first time I've seen acknowledgement on a USGS map that the cemetery was connected with my family. I think I've missed it on other indexes because my great-uncle, the firstborn, Henry II, changed the spelling of the family name, dropping the final "e" -- and even had the 1920 census-taker erroneously list his mother that way, along with Uncle Ed's family! (This has caused a major family split, over the years, apparently, with rumors of gravestones having been altered.) Does anyone else reading this Franklin County list know of "The Indian Mound" (about a mile straight north of Berger) being referred to as "The Fink(e) Cemetery"? ============== David Hadley Finke 1106 Maplewood Drive Columbia, MO 65203 ===============
