I am looking for ANYONE who is a descendent of the following families. If you are please contact me - Dorris Keeven at history@mogermans.org or through the list please. Please - I know you are out there. Important. These Catholic families from near the Osnabrück area departed at Bremerhaven on 25 July 1833 on the bark Theodore Koerner and arrived in New Orleans, U.S.A. in October 1833. Then they arrived in Washington at the end of October. Ages given in parentheses are what they gave at the time of sailing. 1)Bleckmann, Johann Fredrick (33) Anna Mariam (nee Mense) (26) Friedrich (3)Anna Maria (9mos) 2)Buhr, Johann H. I have additional information.
Dear Lois, I don't think that your grandmother was married at our church. However, I did find her listed as a witness at the wedding of George Niermeyer and Martha Rolfe on 6-25-1902. This would have been her in-laws. Rev. Mantels was at our church from 1853 to 1883 so an 1890 marriage would probably have been elsewhere. Some of the Mantels children were still active in the church for decades after 1883 and two Mantels descendents were married here recently. If you are searching for Niermeyers you should contact Doug Niermeyer in Union as he has done a fantastic job of researching that line. The Niermeyers have been members at the Mantels church since 1843 and were among the principal founders. Frederick Niermeyer applied for the Warranty Deed in 1850. I show a Christopher W. F. Niermeyer being born 2-5-1863 and I believe that this is the ancestor you're looking for. If, so, YOU'RE IN LUCK. His parents were Johann Frederich Niermeyer and Charlotte (Hoelscher). The Hoelschers are also well-researched and a Hoelscher family in Broken Arrow, OK was at our Homecoming and Genealogy Day where they shared information with lots of others. They're loaded with information. I'm not at church right now so I can't check but I think this family also ties in with the Kampschmidts and a descendant with that surname from St. Simon's Island, GA has done the best research you'll ever see. In the records of Births and Baptisms I find a Zanrndt family whose child, Anna Marie, was born 7-11-1860 The parents were Friedrich Zanrndt and Friderike (Lehmann) This same couple are shown with a new baby, Friedrich, on 11-11-1861 but this time the last name is given as Zahrndt. Once again this may be a problem with the transcribing from German to English. On May 25, 1894 Etna Wilhelmine Anna Fr. Zahrndt was born to Heinrich Zahrndt and Johanna (Kruel). The Baptism was witnessed by Frau Wil. Kruel and Frau Anna Koenig. This same couple had another child, Wilhelmina Maria on Christmas Day of 1901. The November Baptism was witnessed by Frau Maimie Niermeyer. I have no record of Henry or Johanna being buried in either of our cemeteries or of their deaths while in our church family. I think they must have moved on by 1925. On the other hand, I have TWO Minnie Niermeyers and both are buried in the "new" cemetery. The first Minnie was b. 9-26-1864 and d. 10-12-1949. I think that she was a member of the Zion U.C.C. church in Union, MO. Many people left our church in the two decades right before that because the folks at Mantels wanted to continue speaking German. English was spoken in worship for the first time in 1938. The second Minnie was b. 12-1-1865 and d. 6-2-1948. The only John or Johann Niermeyers are too young to have been Minnie's husband. In closing Ther are 158 years worth of Niermeyers so I'd like you to pin the individuals and times down a little before I search them. Better than that would be to contact Doug and see how he can help. The last I knew, his e-mail address was drniem@us.ibm.com . He's a terrific young man but also one of the busiest you'll ever meet so it might take him a while to get with you. It will be worth the wait. I hope this information helps. Best wishes. Ross Malone

Hi Ross... My oh my....you sure found a lot of my folks. I am still missing two ..a great aunt and my grandmother. MINNIE...born in former Pikes Peak community...married by Rev.Mantels, 11/6/90...she married Chris F. W. Niermeyer of this same community. They are both buried in the Mantels church cemetery along with their young son Walter. She was my great aunt. JOHANNA B....b. 11/8/67 d.1941 she was also born in the Pikes Peak community....and was my grandmother. She married Henry A. Zahrndt and they are buried in St. Peters Cemetery in Washington, Mo. Would there be any way to check on Henry A. Zahrndt my grandfather? All I have on him is he was born in the South Point area 1865 (?) and died in Union 1925. I have not been able to locate any thing about him or his family background. You mentioned being related to Holtgreve family. I had an Elmer Holtgreve ahead of me in school and believe he married Bernice Dewert (sister of Jeanette...a friend and classmate of mine). Could you be related to this family? Small world, eh? You also mentioned Kruels in Union area. I do believe the Wilbert Kruel family is there..he is a descendant of the Hermann Heinrich Kruel you wrote about....he had a younger brother Elmer who died recently. You just don't know how much I appreciate your looking up all this info....is there a charge for this, please let me know. If you do this in spare time you surely don't have time to do all your own work. I do thank you and the wonderful folks up there in Franklin County....you are to be commended on the great site and super service. Thanks again. Lois Webber Panama City Beach, FL (Lois1926@webtv.net)
Hi, I'm new to this list. Been searching about any info on my family. My great-grandfather John Thomas Vallee was born March 3, 1865 in New Haven, Franklin Co. I just looked through the birth records and found nothing on him or his sister Mary. I don't think the family lived there very long. ( He died in 1941 and is buried in Chicago). There were some land records from his parents John B. and Mary ( Mulhull) Vallee that I found, but that's all I've been able to find that puts them in New Haven. They bought property in 1864 and sold the same in 1867 and more in 1871. I think they left the area after that, but no one knows for sure where they went. It was said that John B. went back to France and Mary went to live with her brother Thomas in Iowa. There was another story that John B. planted grapes for making wine and had the Missouri Valley Wine Co.?? Doe anyone know anything about this wine Co.? Thanks, Cris Simmons
Dear Lois, I hope you don't mind that I'm posting this reply to the list. If it's on the list it will be archived in case some other researcher needs the information. The first section of information is from the record of "Births and Baptisms" at St. John's Mantels United Church of Christ. (It's really touching to read through the first two sections and to see the young lives getting started and then to read the 3rd section and see how and when they died.) Christopher H. Kruwell and Katherine Elizabeth (Bergbreder) had a child Baptized in 1843 but at that time the children's names were not listed. Maria Engel Kruwel served as a witness for the Baptism of a Holtman/Vosskuhler baby soon after that. 7-28-1845 Maria Margareth Kruel was born to Ludwig Kruel and Anna Catherine (Lullmann) 9-18-1845 Marie Christine Kruel was born to Christopher H. Kruel and Maria E. (Toerner) 2-25-1850 Johann Wilhelm Kruel was born to Gerhard H. Kruel and Anna M. (Rolf) Hermann H. Kruel was one of the witnesses at Baptism. 9-14-1850 Gerhard Heinrich Kruel was born to Hermann H. Kruel and Catherine (?) Gerhard H. Kruel was the witness at Baptism. 10-10-1852 Johann Wilhelm Kruel was born to Hermann Kruel and Katharina (Pohler) 3-14-1855 Anna Maria Kruel was born to Hermann and Katharine (different spelling with an e instead of an a but maybe just because of the German-to- English transcriber) 9-2-1857 Johann Kruel was born to Hermann and Katharine. Johann Kruel served as witness at the Christmas Eve Baptism. 10-12-1859 Marie Elise was born to Hermann and Katharine. Marie Holtgrewe from my wife's family was the witness at the Baptism. 2-15-1861 Hermann Heinrich Kruel was born to Gerhard Kruel and Marie W. (Hemans). Hermann Kruel witnessed the Baptism. 2-15-1862 Maria Wilhelmina Hamann was born to Gottlob Hamann and Ernestine (Huellig) 8-4-1862 Anna Katherine Marie Kruel was born to Gerhard Kruel and Marie Wilhelmine (Hemans). The Baptism was witnessed by Katharine Kruel. Most of the men of the church were in the 54th Enrolled Missouri Militia but I guess these births prove that they weren't off to the war all of the time. 3-23-1870 Heinrich Wilhelm Edward Kruel was born to Gerhard Heinrich Kruel and Marie Wilhelmine (Hemans). Wilhelm Kruel served as a witness. 1-24-1873 Ernestine Kroell was born to Carl Kroell and Alwine (Gehlert). 2-25-1873 Fritz Oscar Kruel was born to Gerhard H. and Marie W. (Hemans). 3-30-1874 Katherine Louise Kruel was born to Johann Heinrich Kruel and Anna M. E. (Maune) 10-24-1875 Katherine Marie Kruel wa born to Johann Heinrich and Anna. 2-11-1877 Anna Elise Char. Kruel was boen to Johann H. and Anna. That's it for births up to 1880 which is probably the time period which interests you. There is a Hemann family which also had several children during the 1870s - They were Wilhelm Louis Hemann and Amalie Marie (Woelke). Marriage records show the following: 11-2-1856 Gerhard Kruel witnessed the wedding of J. A. Ehlers and K. M. E. Theimann 11-6-1861 Hermann Kruel witnessed the marriage of my wife's ancestors, F. H. Grote and K. W. Wismann 11-1-1864 Wilhelm Louis Hehmann married Marie Elise Massmann 9-20-1871 Wilhelm Louis Hehmann married Amalie Marie Woelke. 4-3-1873 Johann Heinrich Kruel married Anna Marie Elise Maune. In the Death and Burial Records we have: Hehmann, Elisha 3-7-1819 4-5-1881 Hehmann Hermann H. 7-23-1831- 3-21-1911 Heman, Louis 6-1-1841 5-23-1914 Kruel, Amanda S. 1-1-1887 1-29-1950 Kruel, William F. 12-14-1881 4-20-1967 The couple above is buried at St. John's Mantels but funeral records are at the Zion U.C.C. in Union, MO so they had probably transfered their membership to Zion. Kruel, Anna Marie died 3-24-1858 of Tuberculosis age 44 years Hamann, Gotlieb died 12-5-1868 of Neuritis age 55 years, 11 months Hehmann, Herman died 12-24-1870 of cramps age 2 months Hehmann, Anna M. E. died 2-21-1871 of smallpox age 66 years Hehmann, Maria E. died 4-5-1871 of tuberculosis age 22 years Kruel, Gerhard H. died 1-31-1876 of "nerves" age 62 years Hemann, Herman H. died 7-23-1881 of old age age 80 years Kruel, Anna M. They are good people who are very interested in family history and supportive of St. John's and the cemetery upkeep. If you haven't talked to them yet, it would be worth doing. Dear List Subscribers, I'm sure county list subscribers will be happy to learn that early Franklin County birth records have been transcribed and are posted. This volunteer task was performed by Alise Streutker who lives in The Netherlands and to whom I am personally grateful. With the internet, distance is no barrier to volunteering and there is much to be done. If anyone would like to volunteer to help with preserving information, let me know. There are jobs available, large or small, ongoing or one time, something for everyone (wouldn't that be great). <http://mosl.sos.state.mo.us/rec-man/archives/resources/bdrecords/franklin4 2215.pdf> I will be adding this link to the Franklin County Links site today. Also, I put the GenConnect link for posting queries on my site when I overhauled it recently, but somehow neglected to put the links for the other GenConnect features. I will try to get these added back in today. They were not omitted intentionally, although I personally encourage people to use Joe Miller's state archives site for postings other than queries. The GenConnect Boards do not show every posting, just time-era programmed (by a year, a month, etc.), are not as easily posted as the archives, do not have a search engine like the archives, and are not permanent like the archives. Plus, obituaries posted at the archives are read over for obvious errors before they are posted. The thing that is particularly frustrating to me is the duplication. To find all of the obituaries for Franklin County, you would have to check those posted on the Franklin County Discussion List, the ones posted on GenConnect Boards and the ones posted at the state archives. I would really like to see this reduced to ONE place but am not sure how to go about it. If you are not familiar with the archives postings, check them out at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/franklin/franklin.htm> You will find biographies, cemeteries, legal, obituaries, and wills. Joe Miller is the Missouri Archive File Manager for USGenWeb email: <mio@netins.net> Contact him if you have something to post in the archives. Let me know how you feel about this. I do not know if this will be allowed on a mailing list or not, but here goes. I just received this and does it ever hit the nail on the Head.. We have had several friends and relatives that this has happened to in the Past ten years. What a pity. Dear Lois, Can you give me a little more to go on? I especially need a time frame. At my church we show a Gerhard H. Kruel b. 1814 who died 1-31-1876 of "nerves" but that seems like too long ago. Herman Hemann b. 1801 died 7-23-1881 of "old age." This same family had earlier spelled their name "Hehmann." Anna Marie (Wolke) Heman is buried in our New (1895) Cemetery. She was born 3-25-1853 and d. 1-2-1900. On 3-23-1870 Heinrich Wilhelm Edward Kruel was born to Gerhard Heinrich Kruel and Marie Wil. (Hemans). He was Baptized on 8-7-1870. These sure sound like your folks! Send me a little more information and I'll do what I can for you. I'm trying to build a web page for our church (St. John's Mantels United Church of Christ) but it's still very incomplete. It will have all of our birth, Baptism, marriage, and death records when I get it done. It was originally known as The German Evangelical Protestant Church of St. John's and later as the St. John's Evangelical & Reformed Church. It is a little country church but is one of the oldest in the county. It was featured recently in Country Extra magazine. Even though the records are incomplete there are still some pictures there which you might enjoy since this is probably a place of your ancestors. Anna DIEBELWEIS married Mathias ALTMUELLER circa 1870s. Are these names familiar to anyone? Any comments appreciated. Doris Martin Jablonski
Today's issue of the Missourian carried a nice article about the Franklin County Recorder of Deeds, Sharon Birkman, and her plans to put many records on the internet. Saying that she recieves many calls and letters each week asking for copies of such things as marriage licenses she has started scanning microfilms to put the records online. Marriage records go back as far as 1820 and she thinks it will take at least five years to have them all ready. After completing that task she wants to scan the real estate records next. Even though it will take a long time, it's nice to know that the records are so old and so available. At the present time there are no paper records at the courthouse - they're all on microfilm. However, many of the original records are still available and in the safe keeping of the Washington Historical Society and the Franklin County Historical Society. The Washington Historical Society is just commencing full time operation at their museum and the city is considering some financial help to keep the museum and its records available full time. The Franklin County Historical Society is in the first stages of locating (or building?) a new museum which will be more visible, more accessible and safer for the records and artifacts held by the group. Margaret Schmitt, born March 1, 1828, died Dec 18, 1905, is buried in the St. Francis Borgia Catholic Cemetery at Washington, Missouri according to the reading in the St. John's Township cemetery book published by the Four Rivers Genealogy Society. There are no Clay, Dinsbacher, or Fosters buried there according to the listing. There were Binsbachers in Franklin County at the time but I noticed that none are buried there either. I have not heard the surname "Dinsbacher" and suspect it was a newspaper misspelling, which was far more common in that era than today. I actually have three obituaries for one young man, giving his name very different on each of the three obituaries! It had to be him. The date of death was the same on all as well as the account of him being in a tree on the rural school playground when the tree was struck by lightning. We think newspapers make a lot of mistakes today. They were really sloppy in that era. Of course, typesetting was a difficult task and errors were hard to correct once made. Good luck.
