Kevin and NJ and other interested parties. Birth and Baptismal Records for St. John the Baptist Church at Gildehaus are printed in the Missouri State Genealogical Society Journal, Volume XX, No 1 (2000). Also records for St. Joseph Parish, Neier, Franklin County are printed in their 1999 Volume XIX, No. 3 issue. These records are also available at LDS Family History Centers on microfilm but some are in Latin -- actually Latin is not as hard to figure out as it sounds. Records for St. Francis Borgia are in another issue but I understand something went wrong and it didn't get proofread before it was printed; therefore, there are some errors in it. Of course, if you have direct access to the actual records, that is wonderful and probably the fastest for all concerned. I would like to set up a series of web pages for church records and get this information listed at this site. I am presently writing to the genealogical society to see if they will make an exception to their usual five-year rule and allow me to post the information here. If not, perhaps someone can get the microfilm from the churches or from an LDS FHC and transcribe it so we won't be taking any chance with copyright violations. (I realize facts can't be copied, but the format and probably the translation, could). In fact, anyone with access to church or rural school records (no grades please) or justice-of-the-peace records or anything else appropriate for posting here is asked (begged) to contact me. I hope this helps. Sue Cooley Franklin County Coordinator Missouri USGenWeb Project
I don't do this very often, but it's just too good to pass up. So forgive ye olde listowner from varying from genealogy ... but, well, it really is. This was forwarded to me by one of our listers. Sandi (1) Thou shalt name your male children: James, John, Joseph, Josiah, Abel, Richard, Thomas, William (2) Thou shalt name your female children: Elizabeth, Mary, Martha, Maria, Sarah, Ida, Virginia, May (3) Thou shalt leave NO trace of your female children. (4) Thou shalt, after naming your children from the above lists, call them by strange nicknames such as: Ike, Eli, Polly, Dolly, and Sukey.---making them difficult to trace. (5) Thou shalt NOT use any middle names on any legal documents or census reports, and only where necessary, you may use only initials on legal documents. (6) Thou shalt learn to sign all documents illegibly so that your surname can be spelled, or misspelled, in various ways: Hicks , Hix, Hixe, Hucks, Kicks (7) Thou shalt, after no more then 3 generations, make sure that all family records are lost, misplaced, burned in a fire, or buried so that NO future trace of them can be found. (8) Thou shalt propagate misleading legends, rumors, vague innuendo regarding your place origination. (A) you may have come from : England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales....or Iran. (B) you may have American Indian ancestry of the______tribe. (C) You may have descended from one of three brothers that came over from_____. (9) Thou shalt leave NO cemetery records, or headstones with legible names. (10)Thou shalt leave NO family Bible with records of birth, marriages, or deaths. (11)Thou shalt ALWAYS flip thy name around. If born James Albert, thou must make all the rest of thy records in the names of Albert, AJ, JA, AL, Bert, Bart, or Alfred. (12)Thou must also flip thy parent's names when making reference to them, although "Unknown" or a blank line is an acceptable alternative. (13)Thou shalt name at least 5 generations of males, and dozens of their cousins with identical names in order to totally confuse researchers.

This obituary was provided by non-subscriber, Norman Atkins: PLEASANT THOMPSON OBITUARY Contributed by Norman Atkins Following is a newspaper obituary from an unknown paper - known only as the Journal (assumed to be a King City paper). Obituary probably was printed about Feb. 20th, 1907 or shortly thereafter. PASSING OF A PIONEER Pleasant Thompson, one of Salinas Valley's earliest pioneers, joins the silent majority. The Journal regrets to chronicle the passing of Pleasant Thompson, one of the earliest pioneers of the Salinas Valley, whose death occurred at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 19,1907), at his home near King City. He had been ill since Thanksgiving, but bore his suffering uncomplainingly to the end. He was a good citizen, kind hearted and true to his friends and always ready to relieve distress to the extent of his ability. Pleasant Thompson was born December 26, 1830 in St. Louis County, Missouri. He lived in St. Louis county with his father (William Thompson) until about 15 years of age, then moved into Franklin county, Missouri. In 1845, he moved to Texas. At the age of 18 years he volunteered as a Ranger in the Mexican war. He was never called on to serve and in six months the war closed. In 1846 his father died, and in 1848 (Feb. 1850) his mother (Nancy Bacon Thompson) married a man by the name of (Uriah) Burns. At 18 years of age , he started to do for himself. Before he was 21 years old, he was married to Sarah Ann Hamilton, aged 15, in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas on June 12, 1851. In May 1856, with his family, wife and two small children, Alex and William, he started across the plains, by ox team, for California. In the fall of '56 they arrived in Los Angeles and spent the winter there. In the spring of '57 they came to Salinas Valley, and settled near the present site of Salinas. In 1870 he moved to San Antonio, Monterey county and engaged in farming and stock raising. Several years later he went into the hotel (The Last Chance Stage stop) and food yard business at the place now called "Thompson Gulch". In 1882 he sold his estate to the late William Dumphy and moved to Watsonville. After remaining there two years, he came back to Pine Canyon near King City and remained there several years. Three years ago he bought seven acres of land from Charles Bischoff, half a mile from King City, where he made his home up to the time of his death. Their union was blessed with twelve children - eight girls and four boys. Six children, four girls and two boys, are dead, Viz: W.R. Thompson, Mrs. W. J. (Martha) Grigsby, Nellie, John Franklin, Elizabeth and Mary Thompson. The six surviving children are Alexander and Martin Thompson of King City, Mrs. J.N.(Nancy) Marston of Paso Robles, Mrs. Fronie S. Harris of Pemena, Cal., Mrs. W.H. (Frances) Lawrie of Watsonville, and Mrs. W. H.(Jane) Weaver of King City, all of whom, with their aged mother, were at his bedside when he passed away. Note: those items in parenthesis I have added to clarify known errors or to add names. Norm Atkins

I have got to jump in here. The Washington Historical Society Museum is open now Tuesday thru Saturday 10am - 4pm. Sundays 12 pm to 4pm. The Four Rivers Genealogical Library is open and run by volunteers. Their hours are as Sue has listed below. Their library is inside of the museum. They will also make special arrangements for those wishing to do research, if you contact them in advance. You can reach them by phone at 636-239-0280. Their e-mail is whsocty@usmo.com Do consider visiting the museum as well as the library if you are in town. It is a treasure box just waiting to be opened, and filled with displays that will help you put "flesh" on your ancestors. Dear Marsha & List, Sue has just sent the exact schedule for the museum of the Washington Historical Society and Four Rivers Genealogy. Please note the correction below. The opportunity to research in that facility is worth working around the scedule. Ross ----- Original Message ----- From: "S Cooley" <scooley@worldnet.att.net> WHS/4RIvers is now open every day except Monday. Open 9-3 on Tuesdays and 1-4 on all other days, except closed Monday. At least, that is my info. Sue
Dear Marsha, I'll bet you already know about the Kiel File but I'm going to remind you just in case. The Washington Historical Society and the Four Rivers Genealogy Society share a very nice museum/library which is now open every day except Sunday. Many years ago Hermann Gottlieb Kiel created a collection of information which is like no other. I am coming up from GA in about 10 days to visit family and do research in Franklin County. My great great grandfather was Thomas Stith McGee b. 1820 MO whom I believe to be the son of Stafford McGee b.c. 1796 KY but married and lived in St. Louis. Thomas settled in Franklin County and married, 1842, Martha N. (Patsy)DECKER of Labadie. My line runs from Thomas, son William T., son John Ferguson McGee to my father Willis A. McGee. I am interest in ANY info on Thomas Stith McGee. I am also trying to prove positive that he is the son of Stafford McGee and Elizabeth Fitzwater who married in St. Louis in 1819. I beleive that Thomas had bros named George, William and Joseph among others. Any info on this family would be very much appreciated. Marsha McGee Bowen
