    1. [MOFRANKL-L] Virginia Caroline Ellis Sheldon
    2. Jack Sprinkel
    3. I am inquiring about my great-grandmother who was married to a local boy to New Haven, Franklin Co., Mo. His name was Thomas Irving Shelton born Nov 13, 1844. Her name was Virginia Caroline Ellis born Dec 11, 1847 in Va., married Thomas Irving Crook in 1868 I think in Missouri but not sure, lived in NewHaven and had three children there in 1869, 1870 and 1872. She died there on March 8, 1873. She is buried there in that area somewhere. I would very much appreciate having any information you may find. I have a picture of the family and a portrait of her before marrying. The children's names were Mattie, Laura and an infant Eugene Sylvester Shelton, who died Aug 18, 1873, living only nine months. The mother (Virginia) lived only four months after the birth so I feel there was a connection there, possibly complications. Was that an influenza year? In the census of 1880, in Boef enumeration district, I find the fatherThomas and the two daughters living with his brother Wayne Shelton and his family. The end of the story is that the girls married and spent their lives on the west coast, Portland area, and Thomas married again and had another family and he died in Portland also in 1909. Thanks again in advance for any scrap or tidbit of info. Jack in Vancouver,Wa

    1. [MOFRANKL-L] Call for Photographs of Franklin County Veterans
    2. SCooley
    3. Dear List Subscribers, First, I would like to apologize for not being more involved during the past six weeks or so. My son and his wife split up and he has been staying with us, along with his two young sons. Needless to say, this change in the size of our household has placed a lot of new demands on me. He has returned to his own house but I will still be watching his boys after school and doing other things to help him through this difficult divorce; however, my zeal for history/genealogy has not lessened and I will continue to devote as much time to my passion as I can spare! I am going to establish a place on the Franklin County Genealogical website http://www.rootsweb.com/~mofrankl/index.html for photographs of Franklin County veterans from all U.S. wars. If you have any photographs you feel would be appropriate for this site, please send them to me at scooley@worldnet.att.net It has not yet been established as I need some photographs to "seed" the site. Can you help? I am hoping to set up separate pages for each war as soon as I have enough photographs. Some additional biographical information about the veteran can be included if available. In addition, I am still in quest of rural school photos, memorabilia, and information, for posting. Thank you for your patience during my silence! 3. The reason the directory Bev Green refers to listed the location as 12 mi se of Union is that there was no St. Clair at the time. George Hearst defined it in relationship to Sullivan for the same reason. I am interested in any and all information related to this community. Sue I found "A Directory of Towns, Villages, and Hamlets Past and Present of Franklin County, Missouri" compiled by Arthur Paul Moser on the internet. The site http://198.209.8.166/moser/franklinpl.html It listed Virginia Mines as 12 miles southeast of Union. Section 16 TWP 41 N, R. 1E

    3. Ann, The Virginia Mines were at the end of the road where you lived -- down past the White Acres community and partly located on the Loraine Dierking property. In fact, the mines reopened during WWII and I believe your father might have worked there briefly. Your mother donated a miner's cap to the St. Clair museum and she believed he had worn it when he worked there; however, someone else told me they thought it was from the Pea Ridge mines and I believe he also worked there. I don't know where the cap was from but it was a nice miner's cap with the acetylene light on it. The Virginia Mines street in St. Clair continued out what is now Highway K and then followed what is now called Virginia Mines Road (where you lived) out to the mines and across the river (forded -- no bridge) toward the Virginia Mines Baptist Church. Virginia Mines was a thriving community in the 1800s before St. Clair (first called Traveller's Repose) was ever a village. When it became known where the railroad was going to be built, several influential Virginia Mines people moved to St. Clair to be near the railroad and more followed after the railroad came. There is a cemetery on the property known as Hidden Valley on a hillside where three Inge children were buried with matching headstones. There were probably other graves there as well. I believe Ken Middleton (a local archaelogist, now deceased) told me there were close to 100 graves in the cemetery, but the stones are gone. George Hearst first learned about mining at the Virginia Mines according to his own writings, and he became a famous mining engineer (and U.S. Senator) in the West. The school at Virginia Mines was known as The Academy. I would be interested in knowing what marriage record you have found and whatever information that might have been included. 3. Hello to All, I am in desperate need of some help on two of my family lines that pertain to Franklin County. Dyson -- McCoy Dyson is listed in the 1880 Census in Boeuf County with his family. There is no record of him before or after this date. I know that he was in NC as late as 1857. The Census list his oldest child as 16 and being born in MO which puts him in the area in 1864. I know that he also had an older daughter who was born in MO in 1859. So my question is this? How is it that he is not listed in the 1860, 1870 ... 1890 or 1900 Census Records? Family Folklore has it that McCoy Dyson stayed in the Franklin County area all of his adult life. Any suggestions on where else to search out his whereabouts? Kaiser -- Is there anyone out there with any experience in looking into county court issues? Family Folklore has it that John Kiser, of Franklin County (1874-???) was sentenced to a twenty year stretch for an assault. The time period was around 1910ish. How would I go about verifying this information? Thanks for any and all suggestions!

    3. One possible reason that you don't find him in the other census years is because of name spellings. Also, you might check a nearby county (Jefferson, St. Louis COUNTY). Another, you won't find him listed in the 1890 census, because there is no 1890 census. Well, some parts survived a fire, but none for Missouri. The 1890 directories won't help either, because they were for the city (St. Louis). But you really should check out different spellings, and a nearby county. Good luck! 3. Dear Alan, I thought the surnames in your post rang a bell so I checked through the records at our church and came up with some of the same names if not the same individuals. I'm sending them in case they may be of some use to you. These are from the Birth and Baptism Records of St. John's Mantels United Church of Christ. This church was originally known as the "German Evangelical Protestant Church of St. John's Township." It was founded in 1843 and is on what used to be the main highway between Union and Washington. Jan. 18, 1860 Johann Victor Weber born. The son of Carl Weber and Marie (Daetwiler). His Baptism on 10-2-1860 was witnessed by Johann Daetwiler (my note: This witness was probably not the father.) Feb. 2, 1860 Katharine Louise Kaiser born. The daughter of Adolph Kaiser and Louise (Daetweiler). Her Baptism was on 10-2-1860 and it was witnessed by Carl and Marie Weber listed just above. I think that this Carl and Marie are probably the same folks as your Charles and Marie - What do you think? Charles would have been a very unusual name for a German man or boy but these folks often "Americanized" their names as they tried to fit in. For instance, Heinrich became Henry or Johann became John as time went by. Another Weber in the records was Dr. August Weber who died June 10, 1856 of colitis. He was listed as 30 years, 2 months, and 12 days old at the time. On July 25, 1882 another August Weber died. This young man had Tuberculosis and was only 26 years and 11 months at the time of his death. Both of these men are buried in what is called the "Old Cemetery" which is right next to the church. I hope some of this information can help you. Good luck in your research. I have a copy of the probate papers dated 12 June 1868. I checked the St. John's Township Cemetery book and I cannot find him. After Charles' died Marie married Frederick HENDRICH on 4 April 1872 in Washington, MO. I think that she died before 1880, as she is not in the 1880 census. Her name is not listed in the St. John's cemetery book. Their son, Johann Victor WEBER, is listed in the St. John's book at the Wildey's IOOF Cemetery, died 29 April 1878 in Lot 122. Would it be possible that Charles and Marie as also buried in Lot 112 or adjacent to it? If they are not there, can somebody check in adjacent Township Cemetery books for me? 3. Good day to all, Can anyone out there that subscribes to these lists point me in the right direction? I am desperately trying to locate someone who has any oral history on specific people of the the Barton Dyson clan. I am particularly interested in the following people: Bartons son - Descendents of William Dyson; his son Thomas married his cousin Anna. The three of them migrated to MO (Franklin County) in 1840 from Iredell County, NC. William also had a son named Wilson, who was never married and went to Missouri with them as well. Thomas and Anna died in Gasconade County. Barton's daughter - Descendents of Martha Dyson Robey: her son Absalom Robey and her daughter Betsy Robey Holeman. Absalom ended up in Surry County. He was married twice and had no children. Betsy & her husband ended up in Granville, NC. I am going to post this to the other respective county boards and see what comes up. I have dates and more specifics available, if anyone else is researching these lines. Thank you for your time
