I find Merrit living with Tecumsah on the 1870 census. I find him living with Mott on the 1880 census and is listed as a cousins there. Also on the 1870 census I find "Mott" to be living with Julia (Brannum) Henson - daughter of Michael. I believe Mott to be Calvin Mott Brannum and a grandson of Michael, but haven't "assigned" a father to him yet.
