    3. Very few counties have cemetery lot cards. The records of any cemetery is left up to the owner of the cemetery or the association/board of the cemetery. Some cemeteries have great records. In some cases you might find where the sexton who was hired to maintain the cemetery and make the necessary arrangements for a grave to be dug and later filled in kept their own records. These records were sometimes given to the owner or board upon retirement or resignation, however, there were some who were quite stubborn and considered them as their own personal property. Some would destroy the records within a week after leaving the job. Others kept them and when they died their children found them and would then destroy them thinking that they were duplicated records (but they weren't). You'll need to locate the death certificate (if filed) and/or the obit. Another source would be the funeral director because sometimes they would make note of the lot and grave number/location in their records. The Dunklin Co MO County Clerk's office has been of no help to me for almost 25 years. It seems as if the employees there could care less about helping genealogical researchers. They were suppose to have some records according to the State and the County Clerk. The staff claimed they didn't. I later learned they did have them at the time but were just too lazy to get them for me even with the knowledge that I had travelled about 200 miles that morning. I wasn't a happy camper since I had called ahead of time and was assured the records were there and that I could have access to them by the County Clerk, but since that person was off that day the staff was sitting around doing nothing. I called a few days later and told about my visit and the County Clerk was not a very happy camper. I figure there was an emergency staff meeting which was not anticipated by those who were the guilty parties. The Recorder of Deeds and the Circuit Court offices have always been helpful and would go out of their way to help me when I had questions and wanted copies. They seemed to care about the visitors and wanted to make sure the visitors left with a positive attitude. Debbi Geer __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam?
