My great grandfather, james Joseph (jimmy) Johnson was Cherokee born apr 1861 in Illinois. 1900 census shows him and his family in dunklin county,Missouri. He is listed as white but he most certainly was Indian. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks you very much, any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated.marjorie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. For Cherokee, you should try the Dawson Rolls and the Henderson Rolls. Also, in the early 1900's there was a provision that allowed everyone to register. Some took advantage of it while others did not. The government was giving land to those who could prove that they were at least 1/4 Native American Indian. My gr-grandfather got a letter but since he was 1/8 he figured he wasn't entitled to the land and thus forfeited it. Ends up that the definition of "1/4" was that was the most Native American blood you could have, in other words, had to be a grandchild of any degree to a full-blooded Native American. Those that were full-blooded or half-blooded were not entitled to the land. Some of the land was in Oklahoma and it's my understanding that some lands were in Texas.
