    1. [MODUNKLI] Seeking Descendants of Samuel Warner or Volner, Dunklin Co., MO
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Warner Volner Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.dunklin/4271/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am seeking descendants of Samuel Warner who also went by Samuel Volner, born ca 1811 in Tennessee. He was on the 1850 Henderson Co., TN as "Samuel Volner" with wife "Darely/Dolly"; Deed records in Henderson Co., TN record him as "Volner" also. He was on the 1860 Lauderdale co., TN Census as "Samuel Warner" with wife "Dorothy" ("Dolly" is a nickname for Dorothy). I believe that his widow moved to Dunklin Co., Missouri by 1870 with the children including sons Isaiah, Elijah, and Elisha Warner/Volner. This family appears to have finally stuck with the surname Warner. I believe that Samuel Volner/Samuel Warner was the son of Samuel and Synthie (Knife) Volner/Warner. Synthie was a Cherokee woman per descendants Eastern Cherokee Applications in 1906. The Cherokee would pronounce "Volner" as "Wah nah" thus producing "Warner". The family's surname was often spelled as Volner, Valner, Valiner, Voliner, Walner, Waliner, Warner, Wariner, etc. Samuel was supposedly a German immigrant which would also explain the change from a "V" to a "W" in many of the records. From my own research, I believe it more likely that the 1850 Henderson Co., TN census which records Samuel Warner (Sr.) as being born in Pennsylvania is more accurate.
