I am looking for cemetery records transcriptions, photographs or other information regarding Dunklin County Poor Farm, Independence Township near Kennett, Missouri. My ancestor, Seth Hovis (misspelled on Death Certificate) was buried there by an undertaker named Barham from Kinnett City on October 14, 1927.
Most county poor farms which are no longer in operation had their records destroyed within a period of closure. The records that are found are few and far in between. Some counties has laws regarding the recordkeeping and the retention of the records, however, you'll find that a lot of county officials could have cared less about those admitted to the county poor farms. Most administrators did not keep any records of who was buried where in the cemetery and most county poor farm cemeteries have no gravestones. The county paid for any burial expenses and kept it to a minimum for which we would be in shock - no embalming, no services, no casket/box, no obit. Chances are that when you find a death certificate indicating burial at the county poor farm that you've found all you can. Consider yourself lucky in that a death certificate was filed.
