    1. Re: [MODunklin] Re: CEMETERY LOT CARDS
    2. Debbi Geer
    3. Very few counties have cemetery lot cards. The records of any cemetery is left up to the owner of the cemetery or the association/board of the cemetery. Some cemeteries have great records. In some cases you might find where the sexton who was hired to maintain the cemetery and make the necessary arrangements for a grave to be dug and later filled in kept their own records. These records were sometimes given to the owner or board upon retirement or resignation, however, there were some who were quite stubborn and considered them as their own personal property. Some would destroy the records within a week after leaving the job. Others kept them and when they died their children found them and would then destroy them thinking that they were duplicated records (but they weren't). You'll need to locate the death certificate (if filed) and/or the obit. Another source would be the funeral director because sometimes they would make note of the lot and grave number/location in their records. The Dunklin Co MO County Clerk's office has been of no help to me for almost 25 years. It seems as if the employees there could care less about helping genealogical researchers. They were suppose to have some records according to the State and the County Clerk. The staff claimed they didn't. I later learned they did have them at the time but were just too lazy to get them for me even with the knowledge that I had travelled about 200 miles that morning. I wasn't a happy camper since I had called ahead of time and was assured the records were there and that I could have access to them by the County Clerk, but since that person was off that day the staff was sitting around doing nothing. I called a few days later and told about my visit and the County Clerk was not a very happy camper. I figure there was an emergency staff meeting which was not anticipated by those who were the guilty parties. The Recorder of Deeds and the Circuit Court offices have always been helpful and would go out of their way to help me when I had questions and wanted copies. They seemed to care about the visitors and wanted to make sure the visitors left with a positive attitude. Debbi Geer __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lMB.2ACI/2290.2 Message Board Post: If you have not located the cemeteries near Clarkton and Wrightsville, I would strongly suggest looking at three in particular. Wrightsville is a historical location 3 1/2 miles northwest of Clarkton. It is very near the Oak Grove Cemetery. Oak Grove has many older graves, including those from the 1880's that you are interested in. In addition, I would check the Stanfield Cemetery located just south of Clarkton on Hwy. 25. Also, Mt. Gilead Cemetery is located a couple miles north of Clarkton on Hwy. 25 and any of these could also have been utilized by area residents in the 1880's. The Dunklin County rootsweb site has an extensive cemetery listing at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~modunkl2/dcmo-cem.htm

    1. Hornerville Residents Care about Cemeteries
    2. Debbi Geer
    3. I personally have no burials or family in the Hornersville area (that I know of at this time), but thought the list might be interested in knowing that someone does care about the pioneers and ancestors of the Hornersville area. In the Wednesday, 14 June 2006, issue of the Daily Dunklin Democrat, there is an article on an upcoming fish fry that is being held in Hornersville for the annual maintenance of 4 cemeteries within the community's city limits. For those who desire to donate to the association may do so by sending a check or money order to: Hornersville Cemetery Association 303 Pecan Street Hornersville MO 63855 If you need further information, you should call: Pam Fouts (573)-737-2850 The cemeteries are Horner, Hornersville, Branum and Edmonston. The only active cemetery available for burials is Hornersville. A special note is the burial of Buster Brown in Hornersville. The 4 cemeteries have representatives on a combined cemetery association board. Secretary Pam Fouts is quoted as saying "Someone has to take responsibility to make sure the resting place for so many of our ancestors and relatives is taken care of, but it is very hard with little or no annual income." The association is to be commended for their concern and respect shown to all the cemeteries in Hornersville, but more so towards the 3 cemeteries which no longer accept burials. For those on this list who live in or have relatives still living in the Hornersville area please make a special effort to say thank you to the board members for their time in overseeing these cemeteries. It's not everyday when you see several individuals work together for the betterment of their community when it comes to the community's cemeteries.
