Seth Hovers October 14, 1927 Dunklin 29979 There is an image available at: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/results.asp?type=basic&tLName=hovers&tFName=seth&sCounty=Dunklin&tYear=1927#null What gives it away (besides being born in 1851) is his occupation, "Basketmaker" (family trade). He died of malaria at the Dunklin County Poor Farm and is buried there (near Independence Missouri). I am also looking for O.B. Barham in the 1920-1930 census (County Farm, Independence Township, Dunklin County, North Kennett). The death certificate lists him as not only the undertaker, he is listed as employer. You find him, you are likely to find the county farm as well as cemetery where Seth is buried. I am looking for cemetery records transcriptions, photographs or other information regarding Dunklin County Poor Farm, Independence Township near Kennett, Missouri. The poor farm is listed in the 1930 census....but don't yet have access to census images for 1900-1920 to find out how long he was in the area. 1920 census....would be this one: District 77 Independence township (part of), including Co. Poor Farm excluding Kennett city. All north of line between Ts. 18 & 19. I found an image online of Plats for Independence Township in Dunklin County...it lists "County Farm". It also lists a school (Gregory) and a cemetery below (Gregory cemetery). http://www.looktothepast.com/countylinks.html#dunklin A relative had a postcard that Seth had sent in 1919 while teaching and the "County Farm" appears next to a school. I then found the name of the school and am looking for the history on the school and if he had taught there. It looks like there's only farmhouses, but is too hard to tell in modern aerial photos. The cemetery I see on the topographic map is Gregory. It looks like the County farm used to be just north of there. Is there a Poor Farm cemetery just above this one? If you get to the sattelite image, I compared it to the plat map. I'm still trying to determine if the school still exists. http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=121358 Here's the link....scroll down to Gregory school/Gregory cemetery. http://www.topozone.com/states/Missouri.asp?county=Dunklin I just found this I found on a GENFORUM message board: "Gregory seems to be a cemetery for poor people. The grave sites were free. Not a lot of markers out there. My father was buried thru Lentz funeral home and they said people could just go out there and pick a spot. I don't think there are records of where anyone is buried. They didn't have for my father. They did let me look at their book for 1947. Bur all it showed was that my father was buried there and who gave them the information. There are some grave markers. It is north of Kennett." Are locations of interments without markers recorded in the county? Are there any records of the poor farm besides the plat maps I found? Are there records of the school to find out if my ancestor taught there? I can only track him up to in Indiana up to 1893, and only recently discovered the death certificate in Missouri. I haven't determined how long he was in Dunklin County, but just have the word-of-mouth about the postcard in 1919.

Most county poor farms which are no longer in operation had their records destroyed within a period of closure. The records that are found are few and far in between. Some counties has laws regarding the recordkeeping and the retention of the records, however, you'll find that a lot of county officials could have cared less about those admitted to the county poor farms. Most administrators did not keep any records of who was buried where in the cemetery and most county poor farm cemeteries have no gravestones. The county paid for any burial expenses and kept it to a minimum for which we would be in shock - no embalming, no services, no casket/box, no obit. Chances are that when you find a death certificate indicating burial at the county poor farm that you've found all you can. Consider yourself lucky in that a death certificate was filed. One I copied by hand and the other i printed from the kennett Mo. newspaper. I am having some big health issues so my brain isn't always working good right now but i will give you the drift of the two articles. The one in MO, Cape Gerarde?? went as such., two men came to town and became intoxicated and had had to be contained/ One was Charley Bell and the other Jeff Hushstettler. Both were rowdy and so had to be contained in a cell.Mr.Bell set his bed clothes on fire and died before they could reach him. They said he had done the same in a jail in Kennett. Mo and they got tired of messing with him so they discharged him to go on home but this time they didnt find him in time. the second article from Kennett, MO. said tw0 men came to town got drunk, got thrown in the calaboos, set his bedclothes afire and they turned him loose and he went home. he thought it would work that way again but they found him to late and he died before being! rescued. Uriah Horn is Rachels father, she had sisters amd brothers. the horn family came from Estill co.Ky, they have alot on the horn family. I will be glad to assist you any way i can, it may just take me a little longer then it used to take. Rachel Horn ended up marrieing a pat barrett and then a george V. Watkins. Charlies mother married rachels father. I may have messed that up but on a good morning with less aches and pains i will try to copy some of my info and send it to you. I dont have a fax hooked up yet. but isnt this just so much fun learning about our family of years ago and even papers do document it. I was told that Charlie Bell and Rachel Horn had a two room cabin and that ment they were people of money because they had two rooms instead of the usual one. Good luck and keep bugging me till i get you the info. you wont make me mad. just at myself because i know how much fun it is to find out new info. Dear List Members I received the message (adjusted for this posting) below my sign-off regarding families in the Hornersville area. I can only help with cemetery lookups in Bobbie Hatton Richardson's series. The inventories were done between 1969 and about 1982. My expertise of Dunklin Co is in the Campbell area. If anyone can help Michael, please contact him privately. Thank you. Debbi Geer My name is Michael Pippin. I am hoping you can help me. I was wondering if you have some info about my great-Aunt Carrie Ellen (Pippin) Bounds who was married to Loyla Bounds. They lived in the Hoenersville area. Aunt Carrie died in Nov. 1990 right after Thanksgiving. I was able to attend the visitation for her but not the funeral services. Would you have information of her obituary, where she and her husband are buried, or know someone who can help me? It was Aunt Carrie's death that got me started in genealogy. While sitting in the visitation with her brother, my great-uncle Paul Pippin, he was telling stories of his childhood. And when I got back to my parents' house I was looking through a family Bible my grandmother had. Up till then there had been times I had wondered about the family but had done nothing to find out. I suddenly realized if I was ever going to learn I better get started while I still had some older relatives to ask. Anyway, if you could help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I cannot believe there is someone else out there that knows of this having taken place. I knew he died in a jail that burned down but I didn't know why he was there. I would love a copy of the newspaper articles you have. Could you fax me a copy? MyI fax # is 734-629-0444. Did your husbands father know Charlie's wife? She was my grandmother's grandmother. Racheal Bell. I believe her father's name was Uriah Horn. I did know about Bell City and that story about it being named for Charlies but I thought it was in arkansas for some reason. I have a picture of Charlie and Racheal outside their home with my grandmother's mother as a child and her sister. I love this picture (coon skins hanging all around.....)Anyway, thannks again and I look forward to hearing from you again. My dad is going to love hearing about this - this is his side of my family.
