    2. Debbi, thanks for your info. Do you know if I should I contact the newspapers direct to inquire about old obits, or did one of the local societies go thru and copy the old obits. By the way I will be at the St. Louis CO Library Tues. afternoon and will see what they have there for Dunklin County. Margaret

    3. Margaret If I recall correctly the McBride Funeral Home records only dated back to about 1910. There may be a few years before then, but definitely nothing in the 1890's. McBride then sold out to E W Landess who in turn changed the name but kept the records. Then E W Landess sold out to his ex-daughter-in-law Christine Beall who kept the name as Landess and kept all the records. When Christine sold the business it was a young couple (probably in their early 30's) who had bought one of the funeral homes in Malden. All I know is that one of the Pennington cousins inquired via phone to Landess about 2 years ago and the reply was that they didn't have any of the old records. My first thought was that perhaps the main office is in Malden even though the phone call was to a Campbell listing. I seem to recall that the Malden business the couple bought is really not that old and thought perhaps the person was not familar with the Landess records. If I were given the information saying that one name per inquiry, I would think that they really aren't that interested in helping people or it is an employee who is just plain lazy and doesn't want to provide a service which in turn could mean additional business in the future. I do know that the information on the death certificates is roughly the same as that on the funeral home records sheet. The death certificate does however make provision for current address and the precise location of the death. It seems that Mr McBride and Mr Landess were not that interested in getting the detailed informaiton regarding the names and birthplaces of the parents and thus in most cases that info is not available even though MO required the death certificates to be filed with the info beginning in 1910. You'd probably have more luck in seeking an obit. I have found that even though the Campbell Citzen didn't start publicizing until 1902 that the deaths and related obits appeared in the Daily Dunklin Democrat (must have been the only newspaper prior to 1902). I have found in the years ago column of the DDD info on numerous Campbell area citizens who had death dates in the 1890's and some even int he 1880's. Of course sometimes it depended on how much the family was known in the county for the individuals to have some mention. I know that some of the Lacy family used Rocky Hill Cemetery for their burials. Five who have stones are Albert J (son of Chism and Maria E); Chism, Maria E, James R (son of Chism and Maria E); and Lula (wife of James R). Rocky Hill also contains various unmarked graves. However, you just don't know if those buried are connected to those who have stones in the neighboring lot or are another family. 1. Re: [MODUNKLI] MODUNKLI Digest, Vol 1, Issue 9
    2. Debbi, in 2000 I visited the funeral home and at that time they said that I could not search their records. But if I would give them just one name they would pull this information our for me. I told them my Lacy family records would go back more than 100 years and this did not seem a problem to them, but again they would only look up one name. They did not mention that any records had been destroyed. Sometimes a death certificate does not give the cemetery and a funeral home would have that, plus the location of the plot. This would be a really big help. An example, my g.g.g.grandfather Jordan Lacy and wife Nancy Anderson Lacy might be buried at the Lacy cemetery. Since, there are at least 2 sunken graves with no stone, we don't know who is buried there. It could be them, or they could be buried around Malden or Four Mile, etc. Lately when I went through the MO death certificate site, it really helped to pull family connections together. And answered the question of who James Lacy was. Although some records have him as James Conor Lacy or James E, he really was James Buchanan Lacy. They must be the same people because all the records have Sarah Catherine Elder as his wife and are buried at the Lacy Cemetery.

Bridges (the name on the actual death certificate is not Nancy. I can not determine what it is). She was born May 15, 1868 and died April 2, 1925. Her husband was Walter Bridges and she was buried in McGrew Cemetery (near Senath). She is not listed in the cemetery records that I have.

    3. Margaret I had several months ago that someone asked for some records which only dated back into the 1940's and was told that those records didn't exist. I personally know that when Christine Beall owned the business that the records went back to at least 1910 because I have a copy of the book page for my husband's gr-grandfather's funeral arrangements. I wrote my husband's uncle and asked him about the "so-called destruction" of the records and asked that if they did not want them to at least donate them to the local library for genealogical purposes. I never got a response back and on a recent trip down there forgot to ask. I will say this that in some cases the genealogical data is the same which can be found on the death certificate. What was more amazing was the cost of the various items for the funeral details. I'm hoping that whoever said the records were not available was someone who did not know what they were talking about or was at the owner's Malden location which only dates back to the 1940's and just assumed that all the locations had the same time period. I'm not sure the last half of the word is view and it has graveyard, not cemetery. I am looking for a gravesite for a 4 mth old baby that died 15 june 1913. The family was very poor so they probably couldn't afford a marker. The name of the child is Hazel Della Millen.

    1. Re: [MODUNKLI] Walter and Melvina Bridges - FOUND HERS!
    2. Debbi Geer
    3. According to a couple of submissions to Rootsweb, here is some data on the Bridges couple - Walter Bridges b 16 Feb 1869 d 1 Jul 1933 Melvina Amanda Braddum Bridges b 15 May 1870 d 2 Apr 1925 Unfortunately no places were given by either submitter. Both did reference a 1997 Broderbund Software publication of a family tree but did not note who the submitter was. At this point I decided to re-check the MO Death Index 1910-1955. I checked for any Bridges who died in the state in the year 1933. Struck out for Walter. I then checked 1925. BINGO! But be ready for this - Melvina was her middle name! She's listed as: NANCY M BRIDGES You can access the actual death certificate online (and even download it for free). It shows that Walter was her husband and that she was buried in McGrew Cemetery. Now as to Walter's, you've got some more work to do. Maybe he started out with one of the kids for CA and died along the way. You'll have to see if anyone has access to the McGrew Cemetery inventory. However, with a precise date you'll be able to obtain the obit and it may provide a lot of information you need including the death place. Remember that there were times when the funeral directors got somewhat slap-happy and either failed to file a death certificate with the state or they filed not once but twice for a person. Good luck. Debbi Geer __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

Surnames: Bridges, Mundy, Yoder, Morris, Rhodes, Stevens, Williams, Gillespie, Ross, Dimond, Turnbo Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lMB.2ACI/2457 Message Board Post: Walter Bridges b. Feb 1869 Missouri 1900-1920 listed in Dunklin County Missouri Census. 1900-Cardwell 1910-Senath 1920-Cardwell 1930 listed as widowed in Greene County Ark Census. *It's my understanding that Greene County Arkansas is just across the Missouri line neighboring Dunklin County. I know that Walter died between 1930 and 1937 because the majority of his children left the area, leaving behind I believe(I could be wrong) only one daughter; Maybelle who married a Vance. The rest of the family made their way west to California arriving in late 1936 or early 1937. I've been told they had a few rough patches along the way and were laid up for some time in states along the way. I'm not sure where he died but I suspect he died in Greene County Arkansas or Dunklin County Missouri. However, I've sent off to the States of Missouri and Arkansas for his death record and both states say they have no death record for him. There is a death record for a Walter Bridges in Missouri, but not only is the county wrong, but the dates are wrong. Not to mention his funeral record states he never married and died of a gun shot wound. Not that the gun shot wound e! xcludes him from my line, in fact it was the gun shot wound that brought him to my attention considering many of my ancestors and their misguided ways(ha,ha). Melvina Amanda Braddum Bridges b. 5-1870 Missouri. 1900-1920 listed as wife to Walter Bridges Dunklin County Missouri. I know that she died between 1920-1930 because Walter is listed as widowed in the 1930 Greene County Arkansas Census. I also sent off to the state of Missouri for her death record but again they say no such record exists. I'm beginning to think they died at home or something and no one reported their deaths to the state. I don't know what else to think. I haven't given up finding their death records, burial locations, etc. but I was hoping someone in the area may have some cemetery record books, plot records or something that may give me a clue. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you, K Wimmer
