    1. [MODUNKLI] 1860 Trade Journal, WELLS, Charles W.
    2. Peggy Kopp
    3. Dear List - Can someone please tell me if there was an 1860 trade journal showing the various Dunklin County professions? My gr grandfather, Charles W. WELLS, 28, a carriage maker, was shown on the 1860 Union District, Dunklin County, West Prairie P.O., MO census which was enumerated on June 15, 1860. He and his family lived in dwelling 44. No monetary value is listed for this dwelling and so I'm thinking that they were most likely renting it. The value of his personal estate was shown as $150. I am trying to discover approximately how long the family lived in Union District. After this census Charles seems to disappear and his wife, Sarah, shows up in IL around 1870. He might have enlisted to serve in the Civil War but I have not found him on any roster yet, nor have I been able to acquire a service record or pension record for him. Any help is greatly appreciated. Peggy Riggs Kopp

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lMB.2ACI/24.25.1.1.1.1.2 Message Board Post: When John Jefferson died, Jane took her family and moved ot the Kennett, Cardwell area. I think they logged down there. I don't know for sure why she moved away from relatives. My grandfather, Zenas, left his family several times and the last time was when they were in Okla City, Okla. My grandmother had help moving back to SE Missouri from the Cook's. Then Zenas was in Nebraska and wanted Grandma to come there and the Cook's advised her not to. He was never heard from again. Several years ago, I found out, through social security, that he had drawn s/s in New Mexico. Wrote for a death cert., and lo and behold, got one. The person they got the information from on the death cert. had to know him, because it gave his mom and dad's name. So I started making phone calls and located her. Found out that he had remarried again. His wife left him with 3 children. He gave the children to someone in the town they lived in to raise. I talked to two of his daughters. One was very nice, the other didn't want to talk to me, think she thought I was after her money or something. They didn't know where their brother was, he had been in the navy, and di! dn't want to know. She said he might want her to take care of him. Makes me wonder about some of those Cook men and what they were like. I have a picture of Great Grandma Jane. I don't know if there are anymore Cook's living in Cardwell, Mo. anymore. Most of them have moved away. My sister and I visited a Cook that lived in Colt, Ark. and some of the Cook relatives were there. They were very easy to talk to, but we haven't, and they didn't seem inclined to, kept in touch. The Vernon Cook, from Colt, has lost his wife and I don't know if he still lives there are not. They didn't have any children. Maybe we can pool some of our knowledge together and come up with more information about them. I grew up in SE Mo. But we didn't visit the Cook's much after I was the age that I would remember. My older sister remembers there going down to Cardwell. I have a picture of a white building that is called the Cook Hotel. A cousin gave it to me, but have no idea where the Cook Hotel was located.

And someone has already done a lot of work on some of our family. We are related to the Bollingers' and there is a book about them. John Jefferson Cook b 3 Jan 1852, d. 9 Apr 1899, buried in cem. at Scopus, MO(I've been there) ma. Jane Cook b. Feb 1855 at Marble Hill, MO d. 25 July 1928, buried in Kennett, MO, city cem(I've been there)(Her death cert. says she was buried, I think, Cardwell, Mo, but she wasn't). They were married 8 Jan 1874 in Clayton, MO. There children are Zenas Hezekiah b 1874, this is my grandfather, Kiser Cook, Asa Fred, John D., John J., Maradie Sally(Marie), Susan Catherine b.1885, Clolie(Allie), and Dora Ellen. If your father is John J. Cook, I have him married to Bertha Boyer. Now I can't remember who gave me that information, so the spelling could be wrong. I think John Jefferson and Jane Cook were probably cousins. No proof, except I was told that Great Aunt Marie was researching and found that out and it made her mad. They are going to come out with a new Bollinger book this spring that will have some of my information in it.

When they entered service they gave Dunkin County Missouri as their home of record. Soldier: LESLEY ARTHUR MOORE` Born: Jan 19, 1929. Caucasian Date of loss: Aug. 22, 1950. Killed in Action. His remains were never recovered. Soldier: FLOYD EDWARD SCOTT Born: March 30, 1930. Caucasian Deate of loss: Aug 16, 1950. Captured (POW). His remains were never recovered. When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 78 families in Missouri that have not been located. There are ywo famlies from Dunkin County that has not been located. When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency. I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families. And if that's true then they married about 1893 ... + or - about one year. And also shows Maurva(sp?) as having 2 children, 2 living. ( see all census below ) I would think with that Ellen and Elise are her two daughters. It also shows M. J. MILLER as mother-in-law age 51 widow so I would think that is Maurva(sp?) mother. Now the question is ..... was Maurva(sp?) maiden name MILLER or did her mother re-marry to a MILLER. That's my thoughts on the parents of Ellen and Elise.
