I ran the following in my Ozarks Genealogy Column February 21, 2005 Queries Query: HICKS - COMBS: Patricia Osborn Orton, 4309 Indian Hills Rd S. E., Decatur, AL 35603. E-mail: Aptgen@aol.com I am a long time researcher of the Hicks and Combs families of Douglas and Wright County, Mo. For many years most Hicks researchers have relied on the records of Tessie Miller, now deceased, concerning the ancestry of James Hicks, a son of Robert Hicks and Winnifred Combs Sumner Hicks. Tessie stated that she had proof that James was born a Hill and was adopted by Robert and Winnifred. This erroneous record even made it's way several years ago into the Combs Family Newspaper that is distributed to members of the Combs group in Kentucky. Finally, after all these years, I have in my possession a copy of a letter that Tessie wrote to Cinita Brown in Ava, Mo. stating that she had made an error and that James was indeed a true son of Robert Hicks and Winnifred Combs. Therefore, anyone having made the mistake of taking Tessie Miller's research for granted, needs to change their records to reflect James as being a natural son of Robert and Winnifred. I would like to have this error corrected wherever and whenever I can. I am a great-great-grandaughter of James Hicks. Reply: Thanks Patricia, I am glad to receive this correction. I am a descendant of James' sister, Sarah Hicks, who married Joshua Rippee on Nov. 3, 1818, in Clay County, Ken. I was told that James Hicks and his wife, Rebecca Riley, are both buried in the Yates Cemetery in eastern Douglas County, Mo. They do not have tombstones, but are buried beneath a big cedar tree at the lower side of the Yates Cemetery. I am sure she would be a great help to the Hicks researchers.
