    1. Ozark Uncle has info on John Walker homestead plus Douglas County Web Site Update
    2. Kenneth Brown
    3. A descendant of Joseph Walker wrote me for assistance in finding a Douglas County homestead record for Joseph's father, John Walker. I've been successful in that search, but I seem to have lost the requestor's original email and cannot reply. If that person is reading this email, please contact me again. Thanks. Also, I've managed to change the Douglas County websites to where most of you should not have to scroll from left-to-right when viewing the site. Last item, just today I put up some new information about existing plat maps. As always, let me hear from you with your suggestions or problems. 1. Horizontal Display Problem with the DOUGLAS COUNTY site
    2. Kenneth Brown
    3. Thanks to Pat Teed from Texas for pointing out a very annoying problem that probably affects many of you - the Douglas County page is too wide for many computers, and one has to scroll from left to right and back to see all the contents. This takes a lot of fun out of viewing the site. I'm red-faced about this - I should have known. I've consulted with my 'techie son' plus some web design books, and I've found a solution for most everyone (but not all). I'll be working on those changes in the next few days, and please bear with me. Those who have WebTV and those with monitor display settings at a large type (e.g., 640x420) will still have to do some horizontal scrolling but not as much as right now. Those who have their displays set at 800x600 should see the site at its full width. Those displays set above 800x600 will see some blank space along the left and right edges. How do you know the display setting for your computer? Well, one way that works for MS Windows is as follows: click the START button, and select CONTROL PANEL. When in CONTROL PANEL, select DISPLAY. When in DISPLAY, click on the tab that says SETTINGS. On the SETTINGS window, look for a box that says "Screen Resolution." There you will see something like '800 x 600 pixels.' That is your display setting. If it is set at '640x420', consider changing it to '800 x 600 pixels.' It will make the print smaller which may or may not be acceptable to you. Remember that I take constructive critiques and suggestions very well -- let me hear from you. Thanks Pat, for the heads-up. 1. Updates to the Douglas County Website
    2. Kenneth Brown
    3. Everyone, I wanted to announce some additions to the sites for Douglas County MOGENWEB (http://www.rootsweb.com/~modougla/doug.htm) and Douglas County Historical & Genealogical Society (http://www.rootsweb.com/~modougla/HISTSOC.htm). 1. CEMETERIES - I've added what I believe is a comprehensive list of all cemeteries in the county. The list also documents which cemeteries that have lists of burials in the MOGenWeb Archives and links to those lists. 2. VETERANS - New links are provided to some great veteran sites suggested by Janie Luster of Oregon plus a new listing of Missourians who lost their lives in World War I. This last site is hosted by the folks in Adair County-they invited us to use the site. 3. HISTORICAL SOCIETY - My cumulative index for the Historical Journal is now on the Society's page plus a new cumulative Table of Contents that is a text file accessible by all. Everyone - this index has almost 30,000 records covering everyone mentioned in the Journal from inception in 1974 to the present time. Take your family names and check the index to see if they appear. Jot down the issue date and the page number. Then go to the cumulative Tables of Contents for all 44 issues to get the name of the article in which that person appeared. That may help you determine if the article is significant enough to obtain a copy of that issue. The Historical Society will not photocopy individual articles but they have copies of all back issues for $8 each. (The Journal is a favorite of mine - so I'm always trying to push it). 4. LOOK-UPS - Notice that I've volunteered to do look-ups into Bessie Selleck's 1952 "Early Settlers of Douglas County" and also into some plat maps. We may have a new volunteer for marriage date look-ups. We desperately need a look-up volunteer for the 1995 "Douglas County History & Families." The book is out of print, and it contains a fantastic amount of information about the county. 5. Regarding LOOK-UPS - if you need one, remember that it should only be for a small amount of information, and no requests for photocopies of large sections, for example. If you're willing to volunteer, remember that I'll be asking you to send out acknowledgement responses within 48 hours telling the inquirer that you accept the assignment and when you think you might be able to complete it. If you're a constant Douglas County researcher like me, look around at the materials you have that might be of use to others and volunteer, please. Thanks. Well, besides my personal agenda on my many Douglas County lines, I plan to focus in on getting an understandable and usable history of the county's boundaries, townships and legal descriptions. You'll see on the website that I've promised something along that line for a couple of months now. Well, I'm about ready to get after it. Perhaps many of you have heard of the novel "The DeVinci Code" by Dan Brown. Well, my wife got me to read Brown's earlier book "Angels & Demons." I'm not pushing the book but I'm always the history buff-and not much on fiction unless it is historical. Well, what I got out of the book was a good sense of the layout and history of the Vatican. Did you know that the Vatican is a separate country, and you can't technically say that it is in Rome? Any way, my wife asked what I'm going to read next, and I've decided - to heck with fiction - I'm going to start re-reading all the Douglas County Historical Journals for the second time. That's something I really enjoy. Does anyone know? Is there a cure for what ails me? Thanks to all who participated in the Roll Call last month. I personally picked up a couple of new contacts through that exercise. Have a good weekend. 3. Thank you Kenneth for all of your information. That fills in a number of blanks for my records. Would love to have a copy of the Hartley picture if possible. If it's on the web site perhaps I can get a copy from there. I'll have to check your site again as it has been awhile since I looked at it. Guess this link makes us a very shirttail relation. 1. RE: [MODOUGLA] Arden Cem
    2. Kenneth Brown
    3. Rena, I've lost track of the person who originally asked about "Garrison" Cemetery. I just checked Pat Carmichael's DC Cemetery books, and she lists Arden Cemetery in Vol. 1. She also lists the little adjacent cemetery where your great-grandparents are buried, and she calls it "Garrison." Marie Garrison is her source for the listing. Pat is getting a copy of this email and she might want to weigh in on this if she has time. Also, I love to research place names. I just checked the Cumulative Table of Contents for the Journal of the D.C. Historical Society. In the Dec. 1984 issue, the late Marie Garrison wrote about "Arden and Williams Hollow." Much of this you know, Rena, but other readers will not. Marie said that Joseph Garrison and his wife came to the Arden area in 1857 from Webster Co. and they are buried in what we now call "Arden" Cemetery. But she says that the first store at Arden was built in 1885 by M.S. Newton and he established the post office in 1887 calling it "Arden." He named it so because the "beautiful country reminded him of Shakespeare's Forest of Arden in the play 'As You Like It.'" So, prior to 1887, the cemetery could well have been called "Garrison," that being the dominate family buried there. For those not familiar, the valley that lies along the south side of the Arden and Garrison cemeteries is called "Williams Hollow." A dry branch runs goes through the valley, and my grandparents -- Ira and Minta Hartley had their farm just downstream from Arden--probably less than 1/2 mile. My late Uncle Eldon Hartley told me (in a taped interview) that in the 1930s, a flash flood washed down human remains from further upstream, and he described what I thought was another cemetery closer to the valley and perhaps on its south side. I think he is describing a lost cemetery because neither Pat nor anyone else seems to have identified it. By the way, I don't yet know for whom "Williams Holler" was named. Any info out there on that question? 3. Twila, my mother was Kiree Hartley Brown (b. 1911 - d. 1999). I have her Hartley records on computer. The sources for her records, however, are undocumented but are generally quite reliable. William L. was a brother to her dad, David Ira Hartley. So, William L. was Mom's Uncle. Mt. Tabor Cemetery is listed in Volume 2 of Pat Carmichael's DC Cemetery books. I checked it to see which members of William L.'s family were listed. As you'll see, I could only find William L. and Clifford Hartley plus a couple of his Turner grandchildren. I'd be real surprised if Dempsey isn't there too. It looks like he died young and quite possibly in that 1918 flu epidemic. Here's what I've come up with on William & Eva. HARTLEY, William L.
