Posted on: Douglas Co., MO Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mo/DouglasObits/58 Surname: Woods, Goodman, Riley, McLean, Hopper, Musick, Williams, Smith ------------------------- Funeral services for Mrs. Nellie WOODS, widely known life resident of this community, were held Sunday afternoon (8 Sept. 1963) at 2:00 o'clock in the Oak Forest Church at Norwood with the Reverend Ben Nall officiating. Hymns were sung by the Rhoades Quartet. Internment followed in the Oak Forest Cemetery in charge of the Barber Funeral Home. Pallbearers included Lewis McLean, Ted McLean, L.J. Hopper, Tom Hopper, Chalmer Goodman, and George Williams. Nellie GOODMAN WOODS, daughter of the late Pleas and Elizabeth RILEY WOODS, was born June 7, 1877, and died at her home near Norwood (in Douglas County), Wednesday, September 4, (1963), her age being 86 years, 2 months, and 27 days. She was reared in Douglas County in the community where she was born. On November 8, 1894 she was united in marriage with J.D. WOODS, and to them one son and five daughters were born: Hugh WOODS of Bakersfield, CA; Mrs. Rosa GOODMAN of Norwood; Mrs. Grace McLEAN of Mtn. Grove; Mrs. Lillie HOPPER and Mrs. Ora MUSICK, both of Norwood; and Mrs. Bertha WILLIAMS of Springfield. She was converted and baptised in the Methodist faith many years ago and lived true to His teachings. She possessed a delightful personality, always kind and always gentle with her family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband on December 4, 1948. In addition to her children, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mae SMITH of Nettleton, AR; 34 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren, more distant relatives and a host of close friends. NOTE: In the interest of genealogy, it needs to be pointed out that only Hugh WOODS and Ora WOODS MUSICK were Nellie's biological children. The other four girls were the children of Emma FILER, John Dawson WOODS' first wife. It should also be noted that my great-grandmother, who was Rosa Goodman's daughter, and another granddaughter, said on many occasions that after Emma died, and Doss remarried, that Nellie considered the girls her children, and loved them and treated them no differently than her own. She was a remarkable woman, and a true role model for many. John Dawson WOODS was the son of John Sevier WOODS and Louisa Jane SLUDER. He is also buried at Oak Forest.
