Posted on: Douglas County, Missouri Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mo/Douglas/11678 Surname: MCCULLY, POTTER, SMOTHERS, SPURLOCK ------------------------- Thanks for your kind help, especially with the early children of Sarah Ann Spurlock. I had their initials only from an old obit for their half-brother James Robert Smothers, who died 1909 in a train accident near Pilgrim, Dade Co., MO. Elisha A. Smothers, b 1836 TN, is thought to be the son of Elisha M. Smothers, b 1800 TN, and Sarah ______, b 1803 VA or TN. I have never seen any other indication that the mother, Sarah, was born in Scotland? There probably is an error in the 1900 census record you quote -- but Sarah is little known in the records as she died in 1856. Current day descendants of Elisha M. and Sarah Smothers believe they were partly/largely of native american ancestry (Cherokee). Elisha A. Smothers is with his parents in the 1850 Census, Carroll Co., TN. The family moved to Marion Co., Arkansas, about 1855. Elisha is in the 1860 census, Marion Co., AR, as E. A. Smothers with his first wife "Tarry" McCully. He is reported to have served in a U.S. Army infantry regiment from Arkansas during the Civil War (but I am not aware of him ever filing for pension benefits). About 1865-1870 he moved to Missouri, where he married Susan Potter Kirby who already had two children by a Mr. Kirby. I personally do not have the marriage records for Elisha A. Smothers' first two wives. If you like, I can put you in touch with descendants who MIGHT have those records. Elisha A. Smothers is in the 1870 Census in Benton Co., MO, with his 2nd wife Susan and children. I have not yet tried to find Elisha & family in the 1880 census. He appears to have lived out his later years in/near Cedar Gap, Wright Co., and Ava, Douglas Co., MO. The 1930 Platt Map of Wright Co., MO, has a section belonging to Elisha A. Smothers near Cedar Gap and on the line with Douglas Co. I am not sure if Elisha was still alive in 1930 when the map issued -- he would have been 94! Elisha's 2nd wife, Susan Potter, died in 1884 and is buried in Ava Cemetery, Douglas Co., MO. She is thought to be the daughter of Stephen Sidney Potter and either Narcissus Osborn or Bertha Tate. Elisha A. Smothers' place and date of death are unknown to me; but from obits, etc., it seems he was living in MO at least until 1909/1910 and probably much later. I have not yet tried to find him in the 1920 census. My file is kept on-line at Rootsweb, see the link below: Link: Smothers Genealogy URL: <http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=edmond-smothers>

Hi, I have been in contact with a new Goodman family member and I have a couple of questiongs that I hope someone, on the list, can help me with. My Gr-gr-grandparents were Alfred Goodman and his wife, Sarah McQuay ( or McQuary ) and my Gr-grandfather was their son, Robert L. Goodman, who married Margaret Ann Huffman. I have been comparing a database that was sent me with information I have from my sources. I have questions about a couple of the daughters of Alfred - Eliza being one of them. I have her in my records from information submitted by John Goodman to the document "Early Settlers of Douglas County, MO". John was a son of James Pleasanton Goodman - Alfred Goodman's oldest son. Eliza is listed as being married in 1887 to Isaac Woods, who was born in 1871. He was the son of John Sevier Woods. I have no date of birth for her, however, Eliza is included as a daughter of Alfred Goodman. >From the database, I received, Eliza was born in 1877 and died in 1910, marrying Isaac Woods in 1895. However, when comparing the 1870 and 1880 census information, I don't find Eliza. In 1870, the children listed for Alfred Goodman are: Hester, 16; Martha, 15; James P., 14; Robert L., 12; Emily, 9; Milas, 7; Sarah, 6 ( who was not included in the information from John Goodman) ; Pernetta, 3; and Josehine, 1. In 1880, the children residing in Alfred's household were: Miles W., 17; Sariah M., 15; Pernetta, 13; Josephine, 11; McClendon, 8; Louisa, 6 (also, not included in the John Goodman information); and Mary, 3. If Eliza was born in 1877, she would have been listed as being in the household as a three year old. I do have from the "Marriages from the Douglas County Herald from 1887", Eliza's marriage. Eliza Goodman and Isaac Woods, both from Falling Springs, married on 3 Jan 1895. But where is she on the census? What was Eliza's middle name - could she have been the Louisa in the 1880 census? I have a Theodosia Goodman, listed in the "Early Settlers of Douglas County, MO", as a daughter of Alfred Goodman. It states that she was unmarried. >From the database, a date of birth is given as 1879. If that is true, shouldn't she be a member of Alfred's household in the 1880 census? There is also a Tade Goodman, who married Tex Stephenson and lived in Douglas County Mo, from the "Early Settlers of Douglas County, MO". Could she possibly be Sarah Goodman in the 1870 and 1880 census? I have a marriage record for Sarah Goodman marrying David Stephenson, on 20 July 1885. That would have made her about 20 years old, if it is the same person. If someone could help me clear up this information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Linda Benson

Sarah Ann died about 1897 and is buried in the Whites Creek Cemetery. Sarah and Elisha had 2 children: Sarah Ann 'Sallie' Smothers born ca 1887 James Robert Smothers born about 1889. James Robert died in March 1909 in Cedar Gap. Do you have his obit? If not, I can post it for you. I checked my database for Susan Potter and found one - not sure if she's the right one. Susan Potter born ca 1842 md William H. Wood about 1859. His parents were Henry Wood and Martha Potter. I don't know if Martha and Susan are related. I checked for McCully and didn't find anything. I also checked 1870 Douglas Co Census for Smothers and none are listed. Do you have him recorded in any census enumerations? Can you identify which children go with the correct mother? Have you located marriage records for Elisha and his other wives? Hope this helps you some. Mary

In a message dated 3/24/01 12:33:10 AM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << We are taking a "genealogical" trip to Kentucky >> Hi! Debbie! I'm just reading this! Hope you had a wonderful trip and got lots of stuff. This reminder of some of the ancestors families coming supposedly to Douglas Co., MO from KY prompts me to ask: "Was there some trails that were frequented from KY to this area of MO?" I remember that some of my husbands's ancestors came from the area around Frankfort, KY to the Springdale-Fayetteville area, Washington Co., AR (which really isn't awfully far from Douglas Co., MO) This is not one of the families that I have delved into so I don't know if they stopped elsewhere along the trail or not but would not be surprised to find that they had stopped in counties in MO before getting to AR. Debbie, or others do you see patterns of traffic through the Douglas Co. area? Thanks for any thoughts about these movement patterns Beth Peck Cooper
