Welcome Kenneth: You have been a wonderful help to me in the past and I look forward to more contacts in the future. I'm sure you'll learn the ropes quickly. Good luck! David Stevens/Stephens 48, and wife Margaret 34, lived in Douglas Co. MO in 1880, Campbell Twp. David born in AR; Margaret born in MO. Children in the household: Nancy 23, George 22, James P. 18 (all b. AR); William 15 b. KS; John V. 10, Sarah 6 and David 3 (all b. MO). This family lived in Stone Co. MO in 1870... Hope someone can help me with this family; were they still in Douglas in 1900? Does anyone have marriages for these Stevens/Stephens children? Really appreciate any help. Thank you Sharolyn
Welcome Cousin, I am sure you will do a great job. Nancy
Everyone, Debbie Linton, who has been the coordinator for the USGenWeb's page for Douglas County, asked me if I would take over those duties, and I have agreed to do so. Both the web page and the mailing list are now under my administration. Bear with me as I try to learn the ropes. Presently, I don't have any great changes in mind for the page, but I hope to build the database of available resource materials over the coming months. Also, I'm truly the type of person who welcomes suggestions and comments about the information I provide, and I can even handle criticism as long as it is constructive. I'm a native of Douglas County but left there in 1957 at the age of 12-still I have a passion for the place, in part, because I have dozens of ancestors who lived and died there, some going back to the 1830s. I have been actively researching the county's history for the past ten years, and I help the Douglas County Historical and Genealogical Society with its semi-annual Journals. In the near future, I'll try to put a short bio on the page to let you know a little more about me. I know several people on the mailing list and I hope to meet more in the future. They may have been the parents of three boys, John, Steve, and William Robert - all born in the 1880's. John and Steve apparently stayed in Douglas County, William Robert and his wife, "Peggy", moved on to Howell County where their name changed to "Lowtrip". Seeking verification of this family - information on the last name, whether Lathrop or Lowtrip, and if William Robert was related to John and Steve Lathrop. Thank you.
I have tried to send this email, and had no confirmation that it went through, so I'll try again. I am working on a complete listing of Fairview Cemetery in Clay Township, Douglas County (it's located about 10 miles southeast of Mansfield, on Highway U, near what was the town of Olathe). There's a large number of unmarked graves and fieldstones there. If you know of someone who is buried there, please let me know, so I can add it to the listing. This is similar to what I did last year for the Oak Forest Cemetery on the other side of the township. I will be at Fairview and Oak Grove on Saturday to decorate graves -- if you would like a picture of a grave, please send me a note before Wednesday. Thanks! Everyone, many of you know that I do the layout work for the semi-annual Journal of the Douglas County Historical and Genealogical Society. The Society's Summer 2004 issue is hot off the presses, and one can view the table of contents on my unofficial Douglas County website at http://courses.smsu.edu/kwb237f/douglas. Instructions on how to order to Journal, join the Society, or obtain other Society publications are there as well. In addition, for the past several years, my web site has contained a cumulative index of the past Journals where one can look to see if a family member has ever appeared in one of the thirty-some issues that the Society has issued since 1974. Well, BIG NEWS - I just updated the cumulative index for all issues including the new Summer 2004 issue (my cum. Index had become about two years out-of-date). This new up-to-date version is available on my website as a 313-page .pdf file that can be downloaded and read by Adobe Acrobat Readers on either Windows or MAC computers. Try it out and let me know if you have any trouble using this large single file. Oh, a complete list the Tables of Contents for all issues is there as well. One final thing - a major revenue source for the Douglas County Museum in Ava is the sale of Society publications. Back issues of the Journals sell for $8 each including shipping. If you think you can use one of the Society's publications, order a copy and be assured your money will go to a worthy and all-volunteer organization. RootsWeb, I'll get off my soap box now-thanks for being there too. Laine, I don't have a copy of your book "Gone But Not Forgotten" and would like to get one. I've seen the book before, and it is a great work. Could you send me details? Also, I keep an unofficial website about Douglas County at http://courses.smsu.edu/kwb237f/douglas and have been thinking about adding a section that lists available research tools and how to acquire them. Would you like me to list your book and how to reach you? Also, do you have other resources you would like to list? That goes for anyone else reading this email.
