Hi If you go near Columbia, be sure and stop at the University there. The state's historical society holds its archives at there and there are numerous photos, books, and microfilm of local papers. Also, a little closer to Salem is Rolla University (in Rolla). Go to the basement of the library (when I was there anyway) to the Western Heritage Collection room for a lot of donated materials, census records, maps and early works from local areas. And don't miss the book of plot maps which gives the names of landowners and a book of baptist ministers, both of which were great resources. I was able to make copies of all of the materials I wanted. I found a lot of great stuff at both locations, just be prepared to spend a day or more at each, there is a lot of material to look at.
