This is a question that surely applies to me. I live in California, far from Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, New York and Marthas Vineyard where my ancestors were recorded. I have just retired, after working 40+ years, and while I now have the time, I really don't have the money to move east, settle down and do all my own research (even if I wanted to leave my family behind). I am a prime beneficiary of several third and fourth cousins' research, bless their generous hearts. I can thank them sincerely, but I can't reciprocate, except for something I may find online, or a link I may find online, or information on my family line they can add to their info if they want to. I *have* supplied a link to a family line cousins may not have had previously. You have me thinking, though, that maybe it's time for me to send a gift card, you know, like a gas card or another, as a more effective thank you. What do you all think? And thank you all for the research you give to your cousins!
