    3. How did we ever miss this one!!! In a separate email I'm including the roster for EMM 33, where many Daviess Co men registered. SharonW -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, March 19, 2005 7:25 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [MO-CW] Re: Help With MO CW Records Dale, Just last year the Missouri State Archives Soldiers' Database went online at _http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers_ (http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers ) which now eliminates the need to write to Jefferson City and wait the three months until the volunteers there would search for the record. Follow these steps: 1. Enter the name of the suspected service member and you may have to do it several times with a variety of spellings. Remember enrollment into the EMM was mandatory for all MO able-bodied men between July 1862 and the end of the war, so most men living in MO in the early 1860s have entries here unless they were already serving in the military on either or both sides (yes, that is common). 2. This should produce a list of those surnames for which there are records, and you may notice duplicates. Hit "View Details" to go further into individual records. 3. This will take you to a summary sheet about that individual. If this seems to be a service member of interest to you there are two choices. You could hit the hot button for the man's unit to obtain a roster of everyone in that regiment or battalion. This may help you find other ancestors who served with this service member as well as neighbors, etc. You could hit another "View Record" hot button at the bottom to go to the next level for that service member. 4. The next level is a facsimile of the data card as original or copied in the mid twentieth century in the MO Adjutant General's Office by Captain Clyde B. Martin or his men. This contains what the State of Missouri has for that individual's military service record. You may wish to come back to this or another similar Missouri CW forum with questions about the entries on that card. The federal government also has military service records at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in Washington, D. C. and your local library can get you forms to submit there or you can find their website and order the forms through the mail. I should warn you that these are only federal records and usually don't contain Confederate records nor the records of the Enrolled Missouri Militia since all but four of the eighty-or-so EMM regiments were NOT federalized. The NARA will only charge you if they can find a record, and the fees range from $17 to $37, provided the clerks there can find the right record. To be thorough in your research, this is recommended in addition to your search of the MO State Archives. For prison records, and these are vital for many MO southerners, the standard is Joanne Eakin's "MO Pows" that she published herself in 1995 which is an alphabetical arrangement in book form of the Union clerks' one line ledger entries for most (and not all) of the prisoners of the several St. Louis area military prisons including Gratiot and Myrtle Street Prisons and the Alton, IL prison. Eakin painstakingly copied these from the NARA microfilm. The actual title of her book would take three lines, so I abbreviated it. George and Deb Rule have committed many of these entries to an online form in their Civil War in St. Louis website at _www.civilwarstlouis.com_ (http://www.civilwarstlouis.com ) and there are other helpful things there, too. Bear in mind that these entries have lots of errors from the original Union clerks and many prisoners are entirely missing from this source. You may use interlibrary loan to view this book. Also, bear in mind that this only contains the St. Louis area prison records and not those of Forts Leavenworth and Scott nor Springfield for west Missouri prisoners. Further, it does not contain the records of prisoners kept for varying periods at local jails and prisons by the Union military nor the records of the Union provost marshal apparatus, which operated as sort of a secret police in Missouri during the war. Your best bet for some such accounts are local records such as the old county histories published between 1880 and 1920 and the local history and genealogy societies. Now, get to work! Bruce Nichols
