I wished that my gr gr grandfather Lewis D. Shaffer would have shared our Thanksgiving with us. Lewis was born abt 1821 in Ohio and died 5 May 1886 in Daviess Co., Missouri. He married in 1843 Sarah Evans in Putnam Co., Indiana and had 12 children most of which were born in Adams Co., IL. He married 2nd in 1866 Sarah J. Landis in Adams Co. IL. They had one child Iona. Lewis married 3rd in Daviess Co., MO in 1883 Emily J. (Thompson) Hendricks. I would have asked him who his parents were? Also told him that I appreciated him as one of my ancestors. Other questions would have included: Where and what became of his son William? What was Lewis's middle name? How did he meet Sarah Evans? Why did he move to Daviess Co., MO? Lewis D. Shaffer & Sarah Evans had the following children: l. William P. Shaffer b. abt 1844 2. John M. Shaffer b. 1847 d. 1925 m. 3. James H. Shaffer b. 1848 IL d. 1849 Adams Co. IL 4. Sarah E. Shaffer b. 1849 IL d. 1850 Adams Co. IL 5. Mary Louisa Shaffer b. 1853 IL d. 1921 Hancock Co., IL 6. Margaret A. Shaffer b. 1853 IL d. 1953 Adams Co., IL 7. Sophronia Shaffer b. 1854 IL d 1855 Adams Co., IL 8. Thomas Shaffer b. 1855 IL d. 1881 buried MO 9. Lewis D. Hi, Those of us who live in the US, are celebrating Thanksgiving this weekend. With it being harder than ever to get everyone together, there will be special family gatherings from this evening (Wed) all the way through Sunday. If you can find a little time, please tell us which of your ancestors (pertaining to this list's interest) you'd like to be able to visit with during your celebration. Let us know what things you'd like to discuss with this ancestor and why. It would be wise to change the subject line before sending your information. Happy Thanksgiving, Lanita
Lanita, My thoughts will be with you. Sorry to hear of another round of hospital and also about your son. All of us who are parents can imagine how scary that must be. Don't worry about emails . . . you have more than enough going on in your "real" life! Vanette ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
For a number of years I lived in Eads, Colorado. Local history said the town was named for the engineer who designed the Eads Bridge in St. Louis, MO. I've never understood a connection between a small town in S. E. Colorado and a bridge in St. Louis. However, the bridge has a very interesting history, as does the engineer. There is a great deal of info on line regarding James Buchanan Eads who was the engineer. The whole story of the bridge, its builder, etc. is very interesting, even more so if you are part of the Eads family. Go to Google and enter the "Eads Bridge, St. Louis, MO" and you will get the whole story. Doris
My husband has just returned again from a week in the hospital, so if you have emailed me with no reply, know that I will get to you as soon as I can. My hands are full with him and with a suicidal son.... Appreciate prayers, but will get back to genealogy as soon as I can. Lanita Sconce Smith
I searched your file for the name of EADS and did not find it. Want to tell me why. char ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <MODAVIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 10, 2007 6:59 PM Subject: Re: [MODAVIES] EADS..WEBB..GREEN..BROTT...GRAY...CRANDALL..MCNETT > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: itsameg1 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.d aviess/436.1.2/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Hi! Our DCGS membership annual dues normally is $20 and we renew in June. However, since half the year is gone, for now until June 2008, the discount price is $10 per household. You can get on board by sending in to our treasurer, Lois Carter. Her email is: loisc@northmo.net She can send you her mailing address. You'll still get all the benefits, and you'll be helping a great cause. Lanita Sconce Smith DCGS Pres.
If you're not a member of the Daviess County Gen. Society, you're really missing out! Newly donated items to our resource center, continues to be old newspapers as early as 1897. Here is a sample of the bios which have been submitted to the DCGS's newsletter's editor. Only members get these newsletters, and several will be in this quarter's letter. Also submitted is a picture of the Blue School students, 1896, with those labeled. These are just 2 types of submissions that will be in the newsletter...... don't miss out with Winter coming!!!! In the spring of 55, he came to St. Louis and took another course of lectures the following winter, and in the summer of 1856 came to Daviess County and settled at Auberry Grove near the present location of Jamesport, which city was laid out by him and James GILLILAN. Dr. ALLEN continued practicing at Jamesport until the war broke out when he enlisted in the Confederate service, remaining four yrs. Upon his return, he located at Jameson and in 1874 removed to this city where he has since resided, and is still engaged in active practice. Hi Lanita, I would love to be in attendance a week from Sat. However, it will have to be another time. Our six children and their spouses "threw" a big 50th Wedding Anniversary party for my wife and I, last week and we are still recovering. I really should be gathering material for the next "Daviess Diggins', but maybe I can wait until after the 27th, since you will likely write your Presidential message after that meeting. Is that true? Well I will begin gathering material and finish compiling after I get your message. I wish you well at the meeting. Give my greetings to the assembled group. This will be our last meeting for 2007, and all members who can attend, are urged to be in attendance. We finally have the 2nd room ready for cleaning and moving some of our resources in, so we need "all hands on deck!". There are filing cabinets and other heavy items that need to be moved and we need all the help we can get. Also, please bring cleaning supplies to help us get the 2nd room cleaned as well as additional cleaning of the 1st room. Also, if you volunteered to take pictures of a cemetery, please bring those cds to this meeting. Hope to see you then! I am trying to find an on-line transcription of the WOODERSON CEMETERY -- can anyone tell me where to find it?. Thanks, Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert at iggy29@grm.net
Hi Robert, The Society is very much active, we have meetings every other month, and newsletters quarterly. I will see what the problem is. In the meantime, I can send you copies of past issues. Send me your private email address and will send. My email is: ozarkn@grm.net and is posted on the Daviess Co. website. So sorry, Lanita
Attn: Lanita If I had your personal e-mail address I would send this request to you personally. On July 15th of this year I sent a check into the DCGS to become a member. My check was deposited and I assumed I would begin receiving newsletters, perhaps even past issues, acknowledgement of membership and special offers available to members only. To date I have received nothing - is the society still active? Has my e-mail or home address been lost? Please advise what the problem or problems are. Thank you, Robert Mealer
FYI: For those of you who might be new in researching MO, you will find a multitude of info at the Missouri Archives online... The MO Death certificates from 1911-1956 are listed, and some are able to be opened and saved... Go here: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/#search The soldiers database is here: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers/ Bear in mind that MO didn't become a state until 1821, so you won't find any military for the Rev. War!!! Lanita
