Lanita, What were the counties? In 1820 there were 16 counties. There were two that started about Columbia - Jeff City going north to the Iowa border. Look at this site it shows the state andd counties as the evolve. http://www.familyhistory101.com/map_census.html Leon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lanita Sconce Smith" <ozarkn@grm.net> To: <modavies@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 03, 2008 7:52 PM Subject: [MODAVIES] MO land question > Okay, I am researching a couple of families for a co-worker, and I > checked the Bureau of Land Management - General Land Office Records > website... there, I find 2 men with same last name who bought land in > Jan of 1819 in 2 different counties.. > > Since Missouri did not become a state until 1821, how on EARTH did they > come up with that????? Okay, I am researching a couple of families for a co-worker, and I checked the Bureau of Land Management - General Land Office Records website... there, I find 2 men with same last name who bought land in Jan of 1819 in 2 different counties.. Since Missouri did not become a state until 1821, how on EARTH did they come up with that????? I know we were the Missouri Territory then, but certainly, the particular counties were not formed yet.... Anybody got an idea? Lanita

Born about 1800-1805. Her married the widow Alice Davis in Louisa County, Virginia in 1830 then moved to Missouri. I find his step son and two daughters living in Marion Countyy, Missouri. I can not find wife Alice in 1850. In 1860 she is still alive and living with her daughter Mary Ann Davis-Thompson. Was she divorced from Montague? And is Montaque the same person. It looks as if Larkin Jackson is his son, was he a Jackson or a Smith? Interesting to note, My Smith's left Virginia in 1812 and settled in Green County, Kentucky. Montague Smith would have been his Grand Nephew. I would like to determine if Montague is this Montique. Manuel who married Laura Griswold; she is believed to be of my line. This is what I have surmised and I would appreciate any input or further information greatly: 3) Laura Griswold born 1835 (some say about 1838) in New York; married first David A. Manuel born about 1826 in New York - married March 17, 1852 in McHenry County, Illinois. David A. Manuel received a Land Grant of 160 Acres on April 2, 1857 in Plattsburg, Daviess County, Missouri. David Manuel, and Laura Griswold, divorced. It appears as though David and Laura's children equally split between the parents. David married second Charlotte Brown born about 1856 in Massachusetts - married October 26, 1870 in Napa County, California. They had 3 children in 1872-1878 in California. Laura married second Henry S. Colburn born about 1822 in Maine. David A. Manuel is assumed to be a brother to George W. Manuel and Charles Albert Manuel. The Manuel's, and Griswold's came from New York, and George W. Manuel was in Daviess County, Missouri, in the early 1860s. George W. Manuel moved to California at about the same time as David A. Manuel, his alleged brother; George's wife Lucy Griswold is possibly a sister of Laura Griswold. Laura's brother Isaac H. Griswold is listed in the 1880 Census records for Seattle, King County, Washington as living with the Henry S. Colburn family. Henry was a carpenter. Laura and David had 5 children: 1. George Manuel born about 1855 in Illinois. 2. Elinor Manuel born about 1859 in Missouri. 3. David L. Manuel born about 1865 in California. 4. Louis M. Manuel born about 1865 in California. 5. Augustus Manuel born January 07, 1868 in California and died September 29, 1946 in Alameda County, California. Laura and Henry had 1 child: 6. Eineva Colburn born about 1876 in California. And Laura's sister Lucy may have married Charles' brother George W. Manuel: 8) Lucy C. Griswold born 1842 in New York. David A. Manuel who was married to Laura Griswold, sister to Lucy, is assumed to be a brother to George W. Manuel and Charles Albert Manuel. The Manuel's, and Griswold's came from New York, and George W. Manuel is mentioned since he was in Daviess County, Missouri, in the early 1860s. George W. Manuel moved to California at about the same time of David A. Manuel, his alleged brother; his wife Lucy Griswold is possibly a sister of Laura Griswold. George Manuel was born about 1835. If indeed he married this Lucy - they married April 12, 1861 in Daviess County, Missouri and had 2 children: May Manuel born about 1863 and Walter G. Manuel born about 1866. Laura and Lucy Griswold were children of: James Amos Griswold born November 03, 1804 in NY and Polly Robbins. James was the son of: Jabez Griswold born June 08, 1757 Probably Lansingburgh, Rensselaer County, New York & Mary 'Polly' Pruitt born January 19, 1765. You might try the Gallatin newspaper, if you don't get any hits on this mailing list... Lanita
I'm sorry to say that even though I sent the announcement last Thursday to the Gallatin paper regarding our DCGS meeting to be held on Saturday, it was not printed in this week's paper... For those of you who live in Gallatin, I would appreciate it if you would call some of the others in the area... Thanks, Lanita
I was wondering if any of the members could help me in finding family members of William A. McCoy b. 1918 or James P. McCoy b. 1914, their parents were William H. and Mary McCoy all from Daviess Co. I would like to know if there are any decendants from these young men in the area. They had a sister, Nancy who never married. She lived in St. Joe. I've lost the trail on them after the 1930 census. Where do I go from there? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lanita Sconce Smith" <ozarkn@grm.net> To: <modavies@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 18, 2008 8:16 PM Subject: [MODAVIES] DCGS Meeting > The January meeting of the Daviess County Genealogical Society will be > Saturday, Jan. 26, at 1:30 pm at the Squirrel Jail in Gallatin. I have a Mary Lillie Place born August 1883, daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Sweat Place. On the 1900 census she's Lillie and on the 1910 she's Mary L. so she may well have gone by Lillie. I wonder if whoever filled out the death certificate got the information completely scrambled and it ended up with Mary as her mother's name? Francis's father was a William Place but one wouldn't think they'd confuse someone who was another generation back. I can't find either a Lillie or Mary Alexander in Nodaway or Daviess County on the 1920 census. Sheer speculation but at least Mary Lillie was the right age and she was a Place. Vanette, I agree with your conclusion regarding Lilly Alexander. Isabelle Place's husband was William David Cox and that correction to Green Hills Pioneers will be posted on Jan 15th. I cannot identify any Lilly Alexander or Lilly Cox born about 1884. It would be helpful to find some news account of Lilly's suicide. It's abbreviated Wm with two dots below the "m". Lilly and both her parents are shown as born in MO. Her name is given simply as Lilly Alexander, no middle name or initial. Cause of death is also listed as suicide (due to poisoning). There is nothing showing how cause of death was determined. If she was age 38, she would have been born in 1884. Surely they would not have her age off by 16 years on the death certificate? I think her father must be a different William Cox. I have the William married to Isabelle as William David Cox, not William M. I have no Mary Places of the right age to be Lilly's mother. This is quite a challenge.
