    1. [MODAVIES] Questions on murders and suicide, 1942! - McBRAYER, FARRER, LINVILLE
    2. The last week or so I've been looking at McBRAYER death certificates and discovered what has to be a very sad and awful story. I wonder if anyone can tell us more? Bear with me while I try to put this together in some kind of order. Besides the death certificates, I've looked at the Social Security Death Index, Jackson County MO marriage records, a few census records, and the Missouri Marriage Records at Ancestry and one tree at Rootsweb, but most of my information is from public records online. I have more details on most of these parties if anyone wants more information. I am going back a couple of generations prior to the three parties primarily involved (in bold below) to provide some context. Eugene Gregg Farrer married Sarah Ella McCrary; she is d/o Wm. H. McCrary and Permelia Love. Eugene and Sarah had daughter Ellagene Elizabeth Farrer on September 29, 1913 in Daviess Co. Solomon "Sollie" McBrayer married Josie Whitt in 1913 in Gallatin. Solomon is s/o James McBrayer and Amelia Ramsbottom. I haven't figured out who Josie's parents are. Solomon and Josie's first son is Leslie J. McBrayer born March 06, 1919 in Gallatin. Harry N. Linville married Emma Edna McCoy about 1908. Harry's parents are Thomas J. Linville and Rachel Basque. Their son Willard Scott Linville was born April 24, 1912 in Taney Co., MO. Ellagene married Willard prior to 1935. They had two children, "Living" Linville, a boy; and Betty Sue Linville born August 30, 1935 in Daviess County. Ellagene married Leslie on July 25, 1939 in Hamilton, Caldwell County, Missouri. I speculate that they went to Caldwell County because Leslie was not quite 21, but he swore on the license application that he was. Leslie and Ellagene had a daughter, Leslie Gail McBrayer born September 23, 1941. On July 07, 1942 Ellagene and 9-month-old daughter Leslie were murdered about 6:45 p.m. on their farm one and a half miles north of Gallatin. They died from multiple fractures of the skull caused by hammer blows. They were buried July 10 in Brown Cemetery. Later that day Willard hung himself with sash cord about 8:30 p.m. on a public road 2 miles northwest of Gallatin. He was buried July 11 in McCrary Cemetery. His residence was given as St. Charles, Kane County, IL and occupation was laborer in steel mill. On July 8, 1942 Betty Sue Linville died about 3 a.m. at Mercy Hospital in St. Joseph MO from multiple fractures of the skull caused by hammer blows suffered at her home one and one half miles north of Gallatin. She was at the hospital 5 hours before she died. Given the length of time to decide to take her to the hospital then to get her from Gallatin to St. Joseph my guess is she was attacked no later than 9 p.m. - or perhaps earlier, shortly before her father hanged himself? A sad aside is that Ellagene's mother Sarah Ella McCrary Ferrer had died just 15 days earlier, on June 23, of pulmonary tuberculosis. Another family tragedy is that in 1929 Ellagene's 16-year-old brother died of pneumonia. How much bad luck can one family have? We are left with lots of questions. Who was the murderer? Was there more than one? Was this a jealous ex-husband who came to visit his parents or perhaps his children and went berserk? Or was a total stranger the murderer and Willard killed himself out of sorrow? How did the Linville boy escape harm? Was he visiting with someone else at the time, or spared because his father wanted a namesake, if Willard is the murderer? My first thought was that Leslie was the murderer, but that was before I found the deaths of Willard and Betty. To continue with Leslie's life . . . On August 30, 1947 he married Merle Audrea Milburn in Kansas City, MO. The license application shows they lived next door to one another. On December 17, 1947 Merle had a premature daughter, Eva Joan, who lived an hour and 20 minutes. The next I find of Merle is on the SSDI: she died October 01, 2000, probably in Independence or Lee's Summit, MO. Apparently she and Leslie split up and she never remarried, or if so, took back the McBrayer name at some point. On October 06, 1950 Leslie married Dorothy Whelchel who was born in Richmond, MO in 1929, again in Kansas City, MO. She and Leslie lived a couple of blocks apart; Leslie was at the same location as on his marriage license in 1947. Dorothy is not listed on the SSDI and may well be alive. Ancestry shows Leslie J. McBrayer at 454 Skiles Ave, Kansas City MO 64125 in 1993-1994 which is after his death, but perhaps Dorothy didn't change the phone to her name after his death. The number given is 816-241-6744. I am tempted to try to call her but this could be potentially painful for her or worse, if by chance she doesn't know about it. I'm no handwriting expert, but Leslie's signature is virtually identical on all three marriage license applications, which clinched for me that it is definitely the same person. The SSDI shows Leslie died September 26, 1990, probably in Kansas City, MO. Vanette **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? 3. I don't find Alfred [or Alfort] in Daviess Co. in 1850.... Also don't find Martin... I can kinda see Martin [since he's older or more established in 1835 being b. in 1803] to stay behind, but Alford would just be 10.... I can't see him staying behind.. he'd be with Solomon and Elizabeth Ann in the same area or state in 1850 most probably..... The Eliza Ann [possible dau listed] was b. 1821, and would be listed around here in marriage records... she would be just 14 when they moved.. .course, she could have married early.....hmmm, I'll keep this info for future reference, but I'm not sure about those children yet to say yea or nay. 3. Vanette, It certainly is possible that those you listed are additional to what I have. The time frame fits, but they apparently didn't make it to Daviess Co. like those I listed.... Samuel McBRAYER mar. in 1801 according to the U.S. and International Marriages Records, 1560-1900, on ancestry.com. As best has been recorded, they made it to Daviess Co. in 1835, he, Elizabeth, and 6 children are found there... 1850 Daviess Co., MO McBRAYER Andrew, age 26, NC Nancy, age 26, NC Marion W., age 2, NC Ann, age 64, East Tenn Elizabeth I., age 21, NC next door McBRAYER Solomon, age 37, NC Sarah A., age 30, MO Matilda, age 13, MO What sources did you find for the additional children? Will go back to see if any appear in Daviess Co. Census that I have missed.. Lanita

    1. Re: [MODAVIES] McBRAYER and McCRARY
    2. Hi, Lanita, I will never get dug out from all my old genealogy emails, but I'm working on it! You wrote me in July when we were all listing surnames and sent six children of Samuel McBrayer and Elizabeth Abel. I have five more children for them, picked up from various websites. I wonder if they all belong? They are Martin b. abt. 1803 Lavina b. July 01, 1805 William b. March 16, 1808 Eliza Ann b. June 17, 1821 Alfort b. April 05, 1826 [wonder if this should be Alford or Alfred?] My connection to the McBrayers is through the Galpin line they married into several times. All below are Galpins; related to Samuel in the following ways: Audrey A. b. April 1905, 2nd great-granddaughter & d/o Victor Swisher Galpin Heath Conrad b. abt 1935, 3rd great-grandson & s/o Victor Heath Galpin Martha J. b. May 18 1860, wife of grandson Henry J. McBrayer Mary Jane b. Sept. 4 1842, wife of grandson William Martin McBrayer Victor Heath b. May 1 1911, 2nd great-grandson, s/o Victor Swisher Victor Swisher b. Aug. 24 1880, husband of great-granddaughter Maude Gallamore who in turn is d/o Eliza Ann McBrayer (my 'additionals' above). I have several more Gallamores and also a Gallimore who married a Jones - Galpins married Jones, Nation, Place, Lindsey, Swisher, at least one Culver and one Whitt, and nearly everyone else in Daviess Co., I think. Galpin is actually my ex's line but I hold out hope that daughters and/or grandsons may eventually be interested in what I find. And there is a tenuous connection through umpteen marriages and half-siblings between my ex and me, through the Marsh-Love lines. Vanette **************Psssst...Have you heard the news?
