Suggestions for possible next steps include searching Gentry County burials (they were in 1880 Gentry Co. census) and searching probate records for both Daviess and Gentry Counties. There are HAYNES in the work "History of Daviess and Gentry Counties (1922)" but no William, Marshall, or Lucretia.

this is from Lavena Lowery in Pattonsburg, Mo. I have info on Salmon thru my husband Bonnie England From one book: Nelson and Maria Salmon lived in Harrison co for awhile after marriage, then back to Daviess co, in the 1890's they moved to Exeter, MO Barry co. with part of their family where they lived until after the death of Maria in 1907. Nelson then moved back to Salem living the rest of his life on a farm not far from where some of his children and their families lived. He died of lombar pneumonia. At age of 19 he had enrolled in the service staying for three years.During the Civil War. My Uncle Ernest Gardner, married to Stella Nutter--both deceased now. One time on a visit back from state of Oregon where they lived, they went on to Exeter, Mo to visit graves. It could be in the same Cem. where my great grandmother Eliza Ramey (Gardner) Ryan some times spelled Rine,( she married Ryan after Great grandfather died) is buried , We found the cem. Concord Cem. Eliza doesn't have a stone, but husband John Rine or Ryan has a stone. I may have the letter, written from Aunt Stella after they had stopped by the cem. But I remember she said something about a Salmon grave. Eliza would have been Ernest's grandmother, and Maria would have been Stella's. .Lavena ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2005 9:12 AM Subject: [Norton AntiSpam] [MODAVIES] MARIA ANN MACKEY SALMON > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: MACKEY SALMON NUTTER VANMETER ENGLAND > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/EKB.2ACE/754 > > Message Board Post: > > MARIA WAS MARRIED TO NELSON SALMON WHO IS BURIED IN THE SALMON CEMETERY. > I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND WHERE MARIA IS BURIED. Does anyone have any information on these surnames in Davies County. One name I am real interested in is James M. Reed who was in the civil war. Don't have much to go on. Thank you. Linda
Although "s/o" should be "son of" - in this case they were probably thinking "spouse of" I've actually been to Hickory Creek (have family buried there) and it's well maintained. The Yosts apparently spent thousands of dollars cleaning it up and taking care of it. -----Original Message----- From: steve [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, January 12, 2005 5:54 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [MODAVIES] Cemetery Look up According to Cynthia Robinson's Daviess County Cemetery Index (c. 1993): "Keplar, David Abt 21 Sep 1808 2 Feb 1879 Hickory Creek Cemetery d. 70y 4m 12 d. Steve, I checked into the DAR, and will be attending next week baring any bad weather because I need to get my membership transferred from my old chapter in Kansas. We've had freezing rain, snow, and more ice here, so the meeting for today was cancelled. Schools around the area have cancelled most days in the last week or so. I asked at the Gallatin library about a society, as well as with a local [Pattonsburg] group called the Tree Climbers, about starting one. No one seemed interested. Too bad.. there is so much history in the area! Once I get better established here, I could put out an ad in the local paper to see if there is any interest locally. In the meantime, I am willing to do lookups in the cemetery books, the 1830-1860 census. There are several marriage books at the library, but none for Daviess County. I know I will eventually go to the Recorders Office, but there is just so much work, as I can see, that needs to be done that one person cannot possibly do it all! The gals at the library did not seem impressed at the Historical Society's efforts, and the 1830-1860 census are in booklets and kept behind the counter where you have to sign in to get them. Even to make copies of the census on microfilm, you have to turn in your driver's license until they see that you haven't stolen anything before you get your ID back...I've never run across this much security in a library, in all my life!! I am familiar with the Wichita, KS main library where it is about 10 times the size of Gallatin, and never had this much security scrutiny! I'm just trying to figure out what I can do to get things online, that won't interfere with copyrights. I know what a help it is to me when I find something online, particularly if I live quite a distance away! Just trying to think of ways that one person [me] can help. Lanita in Jamesport
Lanita, This is an extremely appropriate question to ask! Off the top of my head, I can think of 4 historical societies within Daviess County, an organization of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and even a local LDS Family History Center. Unfortunately, there is not a Genealogical Society and there is need for one: Daviess' neighbors Grundy, Livingston, and Harrison counties have their own separate genealogical societies; western neighbors De Kalb and Gentry are under the umbrella Northwest Missouri Genealogical Society; which leaves only to my knowledge neighboring Caldwell County without a genealogical society (although like Daviess it does have an historical society). The Daviess County Historical Society does do some genealogical work (quite notably was their sold-out 1985 History of Daviess County which included valuable genealogical data) but is more focused on projects like the squirrel-cage jail preservation. Most of the folks on this list, myself included, do not reside in Daviess County, let alone Missouri. So while many on this list I presume would jump at the chance of joining a genealogical society, we need the backbone presence of people that are willing to volunteer locally. This list serves as a substitute society or forum and I think most every question posed gets answered or at least attempted.
