Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EKB.2ACE/775.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Steve - I'll look at that site and see. Have also got a kind and willing volunteer in Caldwell County looking for divorce info. I have a copy of the divorce PETITION, even a copy of the writ showing that it was served in Jackson Co on William A. Burress. So, I know that James Homer Burress' father was "a" William A. Burress. I tracked a William A. Burress from Caldwell Co (he remarried there) out to Kay County, OK and to his gravesite. Got his DC, which is where I found that he is William ALONZO Burress. At what point to I assume I've been a "good enough" genealogist and accept that this is father and son. It is reasonable to expect that if I found James' BC, the father's name would be written as William A. Burress and I would be no further along! At that point I guess I just make the leap in assumption that I have connected the right dots.

The Missouri State Archives maintains a huge archive of microfilmed county records. There online catalogue of records is found at http://www.sos.state.mo.us/archives/resources/county/croll.asp I don't know whether you will find the divorce records in a circuit court listing or if you'll need to visit the local courthouse for those records. Being obsessed with details shows your strength as a researcher in doing quality genealogical work -- keep it up!

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EKB.2ACE/775.1.1 Message Board Post: Steve - thanks for your comments. I did not know that the historical newspapers were on MF in Columbia. Might check that avenue. Yes, the James H. Burress you found is my guy. I already have ordered and received the SS-5 and it does indeed say who his parents are. Except it is his say-so, only. Interestingly, this man was 11 years old when his parents divorced. The man I have tracked believing him to be the father of James H. Burress (William A. Burress) turns out to be William ALONZO Burress. However - and here's where the mystery continues - when James H. Burress filled out the SS-5 in December of 1936 (possibly 22 years after he last saw his father and 1 year after William ALONZO Burress died)he wrote William ALLISON Burress as his father's name. James also erred in the spelling of his mother's first and middle names (Rhoda he spelled as Roda and Catherine he spelled as Katherine). So - he may have been confused. I'm just "obsessed" enough to want to know for sure! :-) Laura

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EKB.2ACE/775.1 Message Board Post: Birth Certificates did not start in Missouri until 1910. I presume the James Homer Burress you refer to is found in the Social Security Death Index as follows (courtesy Ancestry.com): Name: James Burress SSN: 432-10-5896 Last Residence: 72901 Fort Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas, United States of America Born: 2 Sep 1902 Last Benefit: 72901 Fort Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas, United States of America Died: Oct 1985 State (Year) SSN issued: Arkansas (Before 1951 ) Assuming this is the case, a SS-5 form – the copy of the original application for a Social Security Number – can be ordered for about $27 from the Social Security Administration. The SS-5 does list the parents of the applicant. Another possible source is a birth announcement in a local paper (not really typical in 1902 like today but sometimes can be found). The problem with historic newspapers is they are widely inaccessible with the main source being in microfilm format at the MO State Historical Society in Columbia, MO.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EKB.2ACE/774.1 Message Board Post: Everly Cemetery is indeed in Daviess County; I visited the cemetery last September and all the trees that had previously encumbered it have been removed in efforts to preserve it. Everly is the larger of two 19th century cemeteries located on a portion of “Adam-Ondi-Ahman,” property of significance to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). Everly is labeled #3 in Grand River Township on the following map I created, just south of the town of Jameson: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sareid/map2003.htm The Everly Cemetery Transcription online at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familycollecting/NWMissouri/databases/CD-Everly.htm has the following entry: “Manuel C. A. Co. M. 4 Prov. E. N. Mo. Mil.” with no dates given. A second entry by the Treeclimbers not yet online reveals that the tombstone is located “outside the cemetery”. Charles’ Union Civil War service record can be found online at the Missouri State Archives http://www.sos.state.mo.us/archives/soldiers/details.asp?id=S204735&conflict=Civil%20War&txtName=manuel,%20charles&selConflict=All&txtUnit=&rbBranch=all Viewing the actual record will reveal he was inducted at Gallatin, Daviess County. Surviving will and probate records in Daviess County begin 1890; microfilm can be ordered through either the MO State Archives or the Family History Library. This might be a start to find Charles’ parents.

However, records don't seem to exist for that time period. I've sent a request in to State Archives for copy of BC but I'm expecting them to come back saying not found. Is there any other way for me to confirm who his parents were other than a BC? I feel about 88% certain of his father and 98% certain of his mother - but particularly in reference to his father - would like to feel closer to 100% certain! Father, I think is William Alonzo Burress. Mother, I think, is Rhoda Catherine (Biggs) Burress. I have quite a bit of background on the Biggs family. Ideas? Thanks - Laura

    3. This was sent to me.. had to send to you!! Enjoy! Lanita The public ceremony in which your distinguished ancestor participated and at which the platform collapsed under him turned out to be a hanging. *When at last after much hard work, you have solved the mystery you have been working on for two years, your aunt says, "I could have told you that." *Your grandmother's maiden name that you have searched for for four years was on a letter in a box in the attic all the time. *You never asked your father about his family when he was alive because you were not interested in genealogy then. *The will you need is in the safe on board the Titanic. *Copies of old newspapers have holes occurring only on the surnames. *John, son of Thomas, the immigrant whom your relatives claim as the family progenitor, died on board ship at the age of 10. *Your great grandfather's newspaper obituary states that he died leaving no issue of record. *The keeper of the vital records you need has just been insulted by another genealogist. *The relative who had all the family photographs gave them all to her daughter who has no interest in genealogy and no inclination to share.  *The only record you find for your great grandfather is that his property was sold at a sheriff's sale for insolvency.  *The one document that would supply the missing link in your dead-end line has been lost due to fire, flood or war. *The town clerk to whom you wrote for the information sends you a long handwritten letter which is totally illegible. * The spelling of your European ancestor's name bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronounciation. Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
