Engle, Co. "I", Sgt., age 39, enlisted Aug. 28, 1863, at Buffalo, MO, d. Sep. 9, 1863, Gen. Hosp., Memphis, TN. Hiram J. Engle, Co. "I", Pvt., age 22, enlisted Jan. 18, 1864, at Springfield, MO, d. Mar. 29, 1865, Gen. Hosp., Little Rock, AR, smallpox. I am not sure where the Phillip Engle on page 375 fits in. The closest I can see is the Phillip Engle, born about 1817, son of Jacob Engle and Rachel Vale. Good to hear from you, Rick Gregg

Hmmm. Well, no doubt the book was published with the best available information at the time, but genealogy evolves so it's only natural that there were errors and omissions. I would be open to having the DCHS publish anything in hardcopy they find on the site, but there would be tricky copyright issues. For example, any post to the MODALLAS list or the message boards are technically owned by you, the posters, so the DCHS would have to get permssion for every one of those they might want to publish. However, I'm sure Leni Howe, et al, at the DCHS would like to be informed of any errors in the book. So I would suggest sending anything like that directly to them. Contact info for the Dallas County Historical Society (DCHS) is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~modallas/DCHS.html Maybe if they get enough they might eventually publish an addendum. As a matter of policy I view MODALLAS-L and the Dallas Co. MOGenWeb site as allies to the DCHS in Dallas Co. genealogy and historical research. The DCHS is right there, does primary research from original sources, and like all such organizations depends on publications as a source of funding. (Think how much we are all indebted to them, not to mention free lookups we all get from their publications!) So I try to help protect their copyrights, and encourange people who want to contribute to the website to focus on things that are not available through the DCHS in hardcopy form. In fact, even if people contribute original research to the website, I suggest they also contribute it to the DCHS if they are interested. A good example is Don Smith's index to "Dallas Co. Missouri History", which is his copyright, but he contributed to both the website and to the DCHS to publish in hardcopy form. This was just the right thing to do, because not everyone is on the internet, and besides a nicely formatted hardcopy is a nice addition to the book through the DCHS. So what's the bottom line? I would suggest posting corrections/additions to MODALLAS-L AND ALSO send a letter to the DCHS to put in their files and give permission to publish that should they ever want to update the book. That way the DCHS has carte blanche to do whatever they want with YOUR info whether you posted it to the email list and/or contributed it to the website or not. -- Gary Swift (MODALLAS list owner and Dallas Co. MOGenWeb coordinator) +
