Company I was Captain Morgan Kelly's company. In Feb. 1864 the only troops serving in SW MO were the 6th and 8th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, and the 6th and 7th EMM Provisional Cavalry. The MSM units were paid by the Federal government, but the EMM units were not being paid at all, since they were Missouri state units and the state was broke. So General Sanborn reduced all EMM squads to 50 men each so the others could go home and cultivate their farms. And he wrote Missouri US Representative Boyd that they ought to be put on the Federal payroll for fear that they themselves would become bushwhackers. In August 1864 the 6th EMM became the 16th MO Cavalry, and records were backdated so they could get paid for service already rendered. That's one reason why records for this company are so confusing. There is a section for Dallas County Civil War Links on: http://www.rootsweb.com/~modallas/links.html Including a link to the regimental history of the 16th MO Cavalry and others. Remember we think the photo to the Civil War reunion at: http://www.angelfire.com/fl3/backtrackin/FamilyPictures12.html is of Co. I, 16th MO Cavalry. Court, would you be able to spot your John Riggin there? --gary
