Look-ups - POTTER What I would like to find out is your William brother to my Thomas J. I have a rendition of Thomas J. that I will email to you If I can find the disk it is on. I know he came with at least one brother from Illinois. I have most of my potters in family treemaker and I have three cousins who are daughters and granddaughters of Albert Clay Potter and Grace Beckerdite Potter. Uncle Ab was an avid geneologist in 60's and left a number of family trees and stories told to him by his mother and father, B. B. and Mary Emily Bills Potter who raised their family on a portion of Thomas's homestead at Redtop, Dallas County MO. I also will send you a list of who is buried in the Potter Cemetery. Also, a good number of my potter line is buried in Glover, and Mt Olive cemetery in Dallas County and Rock Prairie in Polk CO. Also some Potters are buried in Cedar Bluff cemetery in North Greene County just east of Fair Grove. Mom and Dad have met two women at the senior center in Strafford MO who are Potters and they look after the Potter cemetery. The Potters will be holding their 76 annual Potter Reunion on the Sunday before Labor day. Attached Picture is of BB and Mary Bills Potter. Look-ups - POTTER Dear Becky: Thanks so much for your prompt reply to the email that I sent Rick. He responded with some very helpful materials indeed. Inspired by what he sent, I spent a portion of my day at the local LDS center looking up Potters and this is what I found out. Thomas and Nancy Potter (my GR-GR-GR grandparents and parents of my GR-GR Grandfather William) are on the 1850 and 1860 Census for Dallas County. They were both born in Kentucky and so are their oldest daughters- Mary (who married Thomas Helderbran - a neighbor in Dallas Co.) and Martha. William came next (born 1842 in MO) then younger children with names like- George W., Thomas H., Carlelia (girl), and McDaniel. Then the family seems to vanish from Dallas Co. THEY ARE NOT ON THE 1870 Census at all. I know what became of Mary (Potter) Heldebran and my gr-gr Grandfather William - they both moved to Lawrence Co. AR in the early 1860's. Sadly, both Mary and her husband died, but one of their sons J. F. Hildebrandt went on to be a very prosperous Lawrence Co. Family. My own gr-gr grandfather fought for the Confederacy and was captured at the Battle of Little Rock in1863. He then spent a great deal of the war as a POW in St. Louis, then later Alton and Camp Douglas in Illinois. He died in mid 1870's in Lawrence Co. AR. However, what became of the rest of the family is a mystery. I have a couple possible leads that indicate that they may have gone to Kansas. I have found Thomas H. there and also Nancy - the mother. She appears to be on the AIS Mortality Schedule for the 1880 Census and died of cancer in 1879. Anyway, I would be very grateful for any information about the Potter clan in the Dallas Co. area that you can share with me. Has anyone done a family history that you know of? Clearly, they were a LARGE extended family that tended to recycle popular family names. Also, what was the impact of the Civil War on the local populace? Could my MO family have been burned out and forced to move? Also is there a complete listing of who is in the Potter cemetery? I believe that some of the younger Potter children (George W., McDaniel, and Carlelia) did not survive to adulthood - so could they be buried in the cemetery you mentioned? For the record, where precisely is that cemetery? I did notice on the 1850 Census - a William S. and Ruth Potter and he was 66 and she was 63. Is this the brother of the original Thomas? I appreciate your willingness to share information and I will be happy to do the same. I suspect that we are "cousins" many times removed. I just wish I lived closer so that I could drive to the cemetery and check for myself. Lucky you to live so close! Again, thanks for your email and I will be in touch again. Paula M. The Indians ran them off and they went back to Illinois. They returned to Greene County, Strafford MO in 1829. He died 1/24/1865. He had 7 kids and one was Rev William Watson born in Tenn in 9/24/1819 married to Frances Glover. They had a William born William Albert in 1868. Thomas J had a brother who came to Dallas County. I have not researched him. Thomas' father was a Thomas also. William could have been a brother. William is definitely a family name and there are several Mary's down the line. Thomasis my ggggreat grandfather. His son William Watson my ggg. His son is Benjamin Blackstone and my grandfather is Paul Clement Potter. I suspect somewhere we are cousins. Thomas is burried in the Potter cemetery about 10 miles south of our family farm. Becky Quinn in Springfield, MO bquinn3@mindspring.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Frederick W. So, if your POTTER family was in the right location, they could have been in Greene Co. in 1833, then in Polk Co. for the 1840 census, then in Dallas Co. for the 1850 census even though they lived in the same house and never moved an inch! Thanks Jo! Hoover kin, this is new info as far as I know. Mrs. Alice Stever must be who I have as "Alcy" married to Steve Willis. Ada married Alexander "Alea or Elie" Dooley. I have Verna as "Fern", married to a Mr. Pike. I have William as Willie, Jessie as Jessie Ellis, Verle as Verle R., Tony as Tony H., Jay as Jay W, wives all unknown. Sister Minerva is Lettie Minerva, b. about 1880, married to James Will Smith, son of Robert Smith and Mary Stretch. Mary (Stetch) Smith was James Bryant Hoover's 3rd wife, m. 30 Mar 1893, making her Lettie Minerva Hoover's step-mother. (Maybe not formally.) This gives us Colorado as a place to look for Lettie Minerva (Hoover) and James Will Smith's family. Lettie Minerva was James Byant Hoover's last child by Martha Jane (Maddux) Prater. James Bryant Hoover only had 20 children, 10 each by Penelope Tibbs and Martha Jane Maddux, so I figure those of us with Dallas Co. Hoover genes must be related to at least 1/2 of the county! :-) It's really interesting how someone in one part of the country can provide a valuable clue for folks researching in another part. Rick, Is your Martha Alice (Lemons) Glass or her husband related to Samuel Alexander Glass b. ca 1803 or his son William. I am related to Samuel through Nancy Glass b. ca 1829 in Franklin Co, TN. She married Absalom Chrisfield (Abner) Austin, Sr b. 1812. They married ca 1862. Jerry

But I don't know how to prove it. > And of course I have not found anything on Julia Melvina Howe's death date. Hi Colleen, I got Alexander's name and birth in Mar, 1870 from Rick. Then I got specific dob/dom/dod from Leni Howe. I don't have much more than this: Alexander HOOVER BIRTH: Mar 1870, Dallas Co., MO DEATH: 20 Jan 1924, Tulare Co., CA Father: James Willoughby HOOVER Mother: Nancy Caroline ROBINSON Family 1: Julia Melvina HOWE MARRIAGE: 24 Nov 1905, Dallas Co., MO I also originally got the info on Julia from Leni, who has her dob as 1880. "Dallas County, Missouri, History", page 314, has her name "Malvina". The Tulare Co., CAGenWeb page at: http://www.cagenweb.com/cpl/tulare/ has a lot of good raw data, but no search engine so it takes forever to schlep through it all. (Some of my distant Swift kin ended up there too so I've been to that site quite a bit.) It has over 97000 obits indexed and a bunch of Hoovers are listed here: http://www.cagenweb.com/cpl/tulare/tcobithohz.htm ... but alas, no Alexander, and no Hoover dieing in 1924.. There is a Julia whose age is about right but the wrong middle initial: HOOVER JULIA T. (MRS) (age) 66, 1943 AUG. 5 but the 1910 census at: http://www.cagenweb.com/cpl/tulare/tulcen1910e225.htm shows this Julia as the wife of a W. K. Hoover, born in KS with parents born in Ohio, so that's not our bunch. It might be worth seeing if Alexander shows up in the 1920 Tulare Co. census. Maybe he died there but his residence was in a nearby county. Coincidentally, some of Columbus Madison "Lum" and Safronia "Frona" Ann (Brundridge) Hoover's children were in Tulare Co. "Lum" was the son of James Bryant Hoover and his second wife, Martha Jane Maddux, making him Alexander's uncle (half-uncle?). Lum moved to Fresno and died there in 1959; Tulare Co. is close by. --gary
Hi Gary, I have been working with Polly Ehlen also. I got the clue for South Dakota, when Alexander Hoover stated on his marriage certificate that he was from Hoover, Butte, SD. So I decided to look in South Dakota for some of the Hoover's and that was how I found the book. The only thing is, the Library here does not have many books for each county. There were no Marriage Books or Burials. What information I found, was mostly from the census. I did find on the LDS records, that Alexander Hoover was supposed to have died Jan 20, 1924 in Tulare, California. But I don't know how to prove it. And of course I have not found anything on Julia Melvina Howe's death date. Rick - there is also an Ida Bell Gregg 1873-1948 that married Charles William Hoover 1874-1952. Do you have her in your data base? Let me know what you need. I do have my data ready to put together for you, if you want it. It took me longer than I thought it would. Off the top of my head, I think, Greene Co. was created in 1833; Polk Co. was created out of Greene Co. in 1835; Niangua Co. was created in 1841 and renamed Dallas Co. in 1844. So, if your POTTER family was in the right location, they could have been in Greene Co. in 1833, then in Polk Co. for the 1840 census, then in Dallas Co. for the 1850 census even though they lived in the same house and never moved an inch! I am making a desperate attempt to locate information on a great aunt Louiza (Liza) J. Gates. She was the daughter of Michael C. Gates and Piercy Prevett Gates of Randolph Co AR (Formerly of Lawrence Co and other counties in southern MO). Liza, also shown as Eliza in some records was born in Randolph Co AR Nov 1879. She appeared in the 1880 and 1900 Randolph Federal census records. By 1901 she seems to have disappeared from the area and her family. No marriage record so far, no burial site so far. She is not listed in the probate records for her father and grandfather who died in 1911 and 1912, not even as deceased. I would be most grateful for ANY help with her. It bothers me that she seems to have disappeared and no one remembers her. In order to keep this short I will not list all the places I have looked. But I am hoping against hope that she may turn up on a marrige index that I overlooked in one of the counties. I apologize for duplicate queries you may get...but my Gates lines were in all these counties at one time or another. Thanking you in advace and praying for a clue. Would you please see if the names GERMAN or KESNER appear? John N. GERMAN Benjamin KESNER Thank you so kindly, Dianna German Anderson =================================================== Hello Dianna - There are no GERMAN or KESNER surnames listed in the index. I bought mine from Higginson Book Company (they are on the internet). The book is HUGE! It contains more than 1,200 pages of "vanity" biographies. The index is almost 100 additional pages. The downside is the cost - it was about $125. Rick Gregg

Bass > > ============================================== Hello April - pp. 925-926: John T. Bass, farmer, was born in Wilson County, Tenn., May 2, 1844, his parents being Dolphin and Rutha (Bennett) Bass. The father was born in Tennessee, and in 1852 immigrated with his family to Dallas Co., Mo., locating near Louisburg, where he entered a tract of land, consisting of 280 acres, and soon had a large portion of it under good improvement. Here he died in 1857, but his widow is still living, and resides in Texas. Six of their eight children are now living: John T., Harriet, Lucy, Solomon (deceased), Henry, Nancy, Louis (deceased) and William. The father was twice married, and had by his first wife six children, but only two are now living: James and Elijah. J. T. Bass was reared on a farm, and educated in the common schools of Dallas County, and in 1862 enlisted in the Enrolled Militia, Company D, Fifteenth Missouri, and after two years' service enlisted in the United States service, serving in the same company. He was in several hard skirmishes, and after receiving his discharge, in 1865, came home, and has since been engaged in farming and stock raising, making a specialty of raising mules and cattle. He owns 440 acres of land, besides some town property, and gives considerable attention to raising fruit. In February, 1865, he was married to Emeline Gammon, a daughter of George P. Gammon, and by her is the father of four children: Wellington, who is in the mercantile business at Louisburg; Walter, Ottie and one deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Bass are members of the Baptist Church, and he is also a member of the Masonic fraternity. Rick Gregg
