    3. Hi all, I've been a member of this board for almost a year and have enjoyed it very much. However, as information went by about where to do what I passed it by because I thought my chances of visiting Dade Co. were slim to none. Now, I'm excited to share that I'll be visiting soon. This is where your help is needed. I'd like your thoughts and knowledge about where I should spend my time while I'm there. I have names and birthdays of many, but at a wall for parents who migrated to Dade Co/Greenfield from Kylesford, TN. Here are my questions: 1. Is it advantageous to join the genealogical society? 2. Where is the best place to search? Locally? (Greenfield) or County? (Dade) 3. Where is the best place to search, library or courthouse? 4. Is there necessary prep work that can be done to utilize our time wisely? 5. Does anyone have phone numbers or operating hours of the places I'll need to go? 6. Where is a good place to stay? And lastly, I'd be happy to hear any suggestions! Lori [email protected]

    3. Hi Lori, Here are some suggestions... Be sure to visit the Greenfield Library. It has a great genealogy room. Every time I get a chance to visit I go there. I believe they are open M-F till 5, and maybe till noon on Saturday. As far as places to stay, there is one motel that I would not recommend. 30 miles east of Greenfield is a small town Lamar with a Super 8 and I think a Days Inn. Have fun! 3. Hi, In answer to your questions:- 1. It is a definite advantage to join the genealogical society. All the searches that you request at the courthouse are supposed to be free if you are a member. 2. Greenfield is the county seat for Dade county. 3. The library is very good, but so is the courthouse. You definitely need to research both. 4. Hard question! Everyone works differently. 5. Don't seem to have any of this info. 6. Do not!! I repeat, Do not try the Motel in Greenfield!!! Lamar or Mt. Vernon is your best bet.

    1. [MODADE] question regarding visiting Dade Co.
    2. Gayle
    3. We were in Dade County a bit over a year ago, and many of their records were out being microfilmed. I needed land records, some were back but not the index. Does anyone know if they are back in the courthouse? I am not sure about probate records ... my husband stopped at that office and the office staff checked an index and said none of our names were in the probate index. It was late in the day and we went on to the library before it closed. Wish I had had more time.. Bruce, you asked about prep work. I would say it is wise to do everything and anything you can at home before you go. Which to me means at least having read EVERY census for the time frame your people were in the county, note where they lived and look at a map and be versed on the various towns and townships, and note if they are along a county line in the event you need to cross over to another courthouse. If you aren't going for a while, you might even want to order in the probate and land indices from the LDS (if they have them) so that you will have an idea about what you might find when you get there. I am a former genealogy librarian. I found many people dropped into the county museum or library with a name and no idea when the people came to the area, where they lived in the county, if any other family members resided in the area. Every bit of information you have at the tip of your fingers will help anyone helping you while you are on a trip. Be sure and take a family group sheet showing each person you are searching as an adult and as a child, and a pedigree chart. Those were my biggest help when I was working. At times, I couldn't find anything on one individual, but my looking at family group sheets I could recognize the name of a brother or sister-in-law or a son or daughter-in-law to get us started. We stayed at Springfield when we were in that area. There is an excellent genealogy library there I understand. Good luck! g2

    3. We were in Greenfield in May 02. All the records had been returned to the courthouse. Some were not available for research because they were still packed in the shipping cartons. The library hopes to get a micro-film copy of all that stuff eventually. The land records are all available for research. Goldie
