He would have either interned (although I don't think they used that word) with an experienced physician, or he would have gone to medical school. In the 1870s, my great-grandfather, Dr. William Isaac Carlock, who practiced in Everton for some 50 years, did both: he initially trained with Dr. John King in Dadeville, and then attended (and graduated from) St. Louis Medical College, which had a two-year course of study. In about 1891, St. Louis Medical College was acquired by Washington University in St. Louis. As I recall, there also was another medical school in St. Louis, which ultimately became the medical school of St. Louis University. I believe these were the only such schools in Missouri, and the closest to Dade County. Steve Adamson
