    3. Nancy and Julie; I had the following on Jesse F. Scott and Mary Sarah Poindexter. With the naming patterns here, especially Archibald Obediah Poindexter, I too thought of a likely connection to Obediah Scott, son of Jesse and Fannie Scott I found in the book. Bob First Generation ---------------------------------------- 1. Jesse F. Scott. Born in 1822 in Monroe Co, KY. Jesse F. died in Dade Co, MO. In 1847 when Jesse F. was 25, he married Mary Sarah Poindexter, daughter of William Archibald Poindexter & Mary Sarah Jones, in Dade Co, MO. Born in 1830 in Monroe Co, KY. Mary Sarah died in Dade Co, MO in 1866, she was 36. They had the following children: i. William T.. Born in 1848 in Dade Co, MO. ii. Mary Mae. Born in 1849 in Dade Co, MO. Mary Mae died bef 1860, she was 11. iii. Rebecca A.. Born in 1851 in Dade Co, MO. iv. Maranda M.. Born in 1853 in Dade Co, MO. 2 v. Archibald Obediah (1854-) vi. George R.. Born in 1856 in Dade Co, MO. vii. John N.. Born in 1857 in Dade Co, MO. viii. Nancy J.. Born in 1860 in Dade Co, MO. ix. Ellen. Born in 1862 in Dade Co, MO. x. Thomas Albert. Born in 1863 in Dade Co, MO. Second Generation ---------------------------------------- 2. Archibald Obediah Scott. Born in 1854 in Dade Co, MO. Archibald Obediah died in Dade Co, MO. On 19 Feb 1874 when Archibald Obediah was 20, he married Sarah Ann Jones, daughter of W. T. Jones & Minta E., in Dade Co, MO. Born on 2 Nov 1856 in Dade Co, MO. Sarah Ann died in Dade Co, MO on 8 Aug 1935, she was 78. They had the following children: i. T. A.. Born in Dade Co, MO. ii. Delphia. Born in Dade Co, MO. iii. Clarence. Born in Dade Co, MO.

    3. Ken; You know, from other contacts we've had, of my connection to the Hudspeth-Harris connections. Good to hear from you again. Unfortunately, the are no Hudspeths in the book, and the Harris' in the book show no direct connection to the ones you spoke of. Aside from the following paragraph, it is mentioned that Charlotte T. Harris, Daughter of Francis and Sarah Kays Harris, married Sparrel P. Ferguson, who was born 26 Jul 1818 Franklin Co, VA. Francis Harris was born in Monroe County April 20, 1832, within a quarter mile of where he now resides. He was a member of Company H, Ninth Kentucky Infantry, with which he served from October 1, 1861 to the same day the following year. He was a Corinth and at several minor battles and skirmishes. His Father, George W. Harris, was also born in Monroe County, about two and one half miles from the present residence of his son. He was a son of Francis Harris, who was born in North Carolina, and moved at an early day to Monroe County, of which he was among the first settlers. Francis was a son of John Harris, who was a soldier during the entire Revolutionary War and was of English descent. George W. Harris married first, about 1829, Jane, the daughter of John and Sarah (Jones) Bennett, of Monroe County. She was born about 1810, and bore her husband the following children; Sally W. (Miller), our subject, Turner G., and Nancy T. G. (Frazier). His second marriage took place in 1866, with Mary Waldon; they had no children. Francis (subject) has also been married twice, first in May 1853, to America M., daughter of James and Mary (Roland) Hutchens, of Monroe County. To them were born Wilson P., Mary T. (Sartin), Eliza J. (Witty), and Loretta and Lucetta (twins, both deceased). His second marriage took place November 17, 1864, with Amanda C., daughter of Hiram K. and Mahala (Howard) Walling. She was born January 10, 1843. To them have been born Hiram W., Francis G. (deceased), George Francis, and Felix R. (deceased). Mr. Harris has become the owner, by his own labor, of 100 acres of well improved and productive land in a fine state of cultivation. He is a member of the Christian Church, a thoroughly self-made man, and in politics, is a Republican. My kind of guy! Maybe this may help a little, Bob

    3. Jane and fellow listers; Here are what I have found in the book on the Dunns and Gillenwaters. Henry B. Dunn was born February 23, 1824, in Gerrard County, KY, and is the third of three sons and eight daughters, all of whom lived to be grown, born of John A. and Margaret (Bright) Dunn. John A. Dunn was born in Maryland, and when a boy, was brought about 1800 by his parents and settled in Kentucky. He migrated to Monroe County in 1825; was a son of Augustus Dunn, who married Ellen Aldridge, and emigrated from Maryland about 1800. Mrs. Margaret Dunn was born in 1795, in Lincoln County, Ky., a daughter of Henry Bright, who married a Miss Pope. He and his wife came from Pennsylvania, and were of Dutch parents; immigrated to Lincoln County, Ky.,when a lad of eighteen years. Henry B. Dunn was reared on a farm and received a common school education. He was but a lad of thirteen years at his Father's death; remained with his Mother until nineteen, when he commenced the battle of life on his own responsibility. At twenty-one he purchased 300 acres at $1.53 per acre, partially improved, which he sold and purchased 225 acres where he now resides, in Gum Precinct, Monroe County, which he has improved with good residence and orchard. He married February 11, 1847, Rhoda I. Flippin, of Monroe County, a daughter of James and Isabella (Brown) Flippin. By this marriage ten children were born- but three lived to be grown; Harriett I. J. Hughes, Josepeth A., and Nancy E. Young. Mrs. Dunn departed this life in 1863, and Mr. Dunn married , April 8, 1877, Mrs. Margaret Stahall, of Simpson County. She is a Daughter of James and Nancy (Chason) Smith, who were natives of Kentucky and South Carolina respectively. James Smith was a son of James Smith and Elizabeth Runnels. By first husband, Mrs. Dunn had born four children, one living, America E. Wilson. Mr. Dunn and wife are members of the Christian Church. He is a Mason; was a member of the Grange, and cast his first presidential vote for Gen. Scott. Since the war, he has voted the Democratic ticket. Other mentions of the Dunn family are; under the story on Henry C. Franklin, who married 11 Mar 1856 Matilda H. Dunn, daughter of John A. and Margaret Dunn of Allen County, KY. John and Margaret were natives of Gerrard and Lincoln Counties. John was a substantial farmer and slave owner, and an early settler of Kentucky. And, under the story of John C. Howard, who married 1 Apr 1852 Nancy P. Dunn, Daughter of John A. and Margaret (Bright) Dunn, who immigrated to Allen County in 1825. Thomas C. Gillenwaters was born November 11, 1839, in Hawkins County, Tenn., and is the youngest of six sons and seven daughters (eleven lived to be grown) born to David and Kiziah (Wilson) Gillenwaters. David was born and reared in Hawkins County, Tenn., was a farmer; immigrated to Monroe County, Ky. about 1856; purchased a farm of 200 acres, on which he remained until his death in April, 1867, aged about eighty years. He was the son of Joel Gillenwaters, who was born and reared in Hawkins County, Tenn., and whose father was one of the first settlers of Tennessee; was also a slave owner. Mrs. Kiziah Gillenwaters was born and reared in Hawkins County, Tenn., Daughter of Samuel Wilson, who was a soldier in the War of 1812. Mr. Wilson was sheriff of his county for several terms; was a slave holder and farmer; immigrated to Arkansas at an early day, where he died in 1855, at quite an advanced age; was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Thomas C. Gillenwaters was reared on a farm and received a fair English education. At the age of seventeen he lost his Mother and for six or seven years after made his home with his cousin; in the meantime, he attended school, and at twenty years, he commenced teaching, at which he has been engaged ever since. He served as deputy county clerk several terms in Monroe County. In 1867 he moved to Barren County; ten years later returned to Monroe County, and settled near Flippin, where he has been engaged in teaching and carries on farming during the summer. He owns 104 acres just East of Fountain Run, and a house and lot in Flippin, also the schoolhouse and lot. He and Prof. Taylor erected the schoolhouse in 1882 and established a good school. Mr. Gillenwaters married August 10, 1865, Helen M. Watson, of Barren County, a daughter of Levin and Sarah (Morrison) Watson. Mr. Watson, a son of William Watson, was born in Virginia, and reared in Perry County, Tenn., moved to Barren County, where he married his wife, who was born and reared in that county. To Mr. and Mrs. Gillenwaters were born eight children, five living; Levie E., Bettie Cora, Thomas Morain, Mollie Bell, and Ettie Agnes. He and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is a member of the Masonic Fraternity, was also a member of the Grange. Mr. Gillenwaters is a self-made man and a persevering student. In politics he is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Bell and Everett. Other mentions of Gillenwaters are; under the story on Elijah A. Purcell, who was son of Daniel R. and Henrietta (Gillenwaters) Purcell. Henrietta was born February 13, 1816, in Hawkins County, TN, Daughter of Elijah C. and Rebecca (Snodgrass) Gillenwaters, who were born respectively in Hawkins and Sullivan Counties, TN. Elijah was Son of Joel Gillenwaters. Hope this helps out. Bob

    3. Hi All, If anyone has the Maple Grove Cemtery book and would do a lookup for me, it would be greatly appreciated. My G Aunt, E. Catherine "Kate" SMITH born Oct. 1873. Died unknown and today, I heard buried in Maple Grove Cemetary. Her daughter Mabel Fern SMITH marrried a FARMER (surname). Kate's husband SMITH died prior to the Dade County, US Census of 1900 where Kate shows as a widow living in the household of Frank FARMER and wife Emma(WARRENFARMER. Also, I am searchcing for any of Mabel Fern's FARMER descendants. Was anyone lucky enough to hear of and purchase a book by the late Delores Purdy which included FARMERs, AMOSs and other Dade County Families? Thanks for any help. Jim Adams

    3. There is one more location associated with these interrelated families that I left out previously. Many also went on to settle in Grayson County TX, either directly from KY, or after stopping in Dade. The Grayson County Genweb site has a nice bio book on line from the 1800's that contains references to the families discussed. 2. Bob, I would be very interested in any information on the HARRIS family that might be found in the book of Monroe Co, KY biographies. Of particular interest would be William HARRIS (1809-1870) and/or his brother Benjamin HARRIS (1805-1885). William married Sarah HUDSPETH and Benjamin married Nancy HUDSPETH. Sarah and Nancy are sisters and the daughters of Giles HUDSPETH and Catherine Discretion SATER. We are seeking information that would show who the parents of William and Benjamin are. It is believed that their family migrated from Surry Co, NC to Monroe Co, KY and then on to St.Clair and Benton Counties in Missouri, possibly by way of Dade Co. Thanks, Ken Soper Apple Valley, CA

    3. Hi Bob; Thanks for all the info on the Scotts in KY. I think the Scott family tree you included is what I sent you because it is the info I already have. But I am particularly interested in the info you sent about the families in KY. I had nothing on the "KY years." And some of the names are very familiar to me but didn't have the connection because I was missing the "KY years" where some were born and married. You have filled in some of the blanks. Maybe you (or anyone else reading this) can help here. My GG grandfather, Daniel Wentworth Scott married Mary Ann SPRINGER. She was the daughter of Mary Ann (Lucy) Hudspeth. Do you or anyone else have any information on Mary Ann (Lucy) Hudspeth and her husband, (Mary Ann Springer's parents?) Do you know if "Lucy" Hudspeth and Mary Ann (Lucy) Hudspeth are the same person or if they are two different people? Thanks again for all your help. 3. Nancy; Thanks so much for info on my families in Monroe, KY. I had nothing more than what my father wrote down about them being in Monroe Co., but no place names. Your info helps allot. I'm not sure how Obediah or Jesse Scott fit in but I think also that they are connected somehow. I've seen their names many times connected with MY Scotts. They could be cousins/uncles to my Scott branch. I will certainly get the book, Saga of Coe Ridge, as some of the Scott's married Coe's. Thanks again. Julie L. Although it is unknown if Daniel and Jesse how Daniel and Jesse are related, the fact that their grandsons and gr. grandsons lived in such close proximity is certainly a good case for a close relationship between Jesse and Daniel. 3. Julie, and fellow listers; Yes, Julie, long time no hear. You have already sent a lot on your Scotts. I will attach some Scott info at the end of this e-mail. I don't have anything else on the Scott family mentioned in the following stories. Much of it you may have shared with me already. The only place mentioned here in Monroe County is Rockbridge. In another section, speaking of Coes, the closest pinpoint of place is "...the Southeast corner of Monroe County, Ky." I visited Monroe Co, KY a couple weeks ago while on vacation. Due to court house fires several time through it's history, there are few records available, and, I have it on good authority, the records that have been left have been terribly mishandled. The best source I know of is an acquaintance of mine who I have been in contact with many times over the past 10 years or so, and had a wonderful visit with him while I was there. Mr. Dayton Birdwell. 711 Monroe Dr. Tompkinsville, KY. Another good source is Mr. Doug Moore [email protected] who has a wonderful file of Monroe Countians on Rootsweb. Hope this info helps. The only mention of Scotts in the Monroe County book is in direct connection with the McMillin Family. They did something interesting. They moved from Monroe County to Dade County in 1850, then moved back to Monroe County after the end of the war in '65. The book itself is a reprint of sections of previous works, "History of Kentucky" by Lewis Collins c. 1882 and "Kentucky: A History of the State" by W. H. Perin, J. H. Battle, and G. C. Kniffin c. 1885. The compilation was done by Mountain Press P.O. Box 400, Signal Mountain, TN, 37377-0400 and the web site www.mountainpress.com I haven't tried the web site yet. I bought the book second hand on e-bay. Mt. Press may yet have copies available. There is no date or other copyright shown of this printing, so there's no tellin'. I will here transcribe the McMillin entries as they are in the book. John T. McMillin was born January 15, 1827 in Jackson (now Clay) County, Tenn.; in 1832, removed with his parents to Monroe County, Ky., where he grew to manhood; and in 1850, settled in Dade County, Mo., where he remained until 1865, when he returned to Monroe County, his present home. In 1861, he enlisted in the Sixteenth Missouri Confederate Regiment, and remained in Price's army until the close of the war, participating in all the hard battles of that famous army corps. His Father, P. Keenan, was born in Maryland in 1788; was a soldier in the War of 1812; and died in August, 1861. He was the son of Daniel McMillin, an Irishman, who was a minister of the Gospel, and died in Indiana. Keenan married Mary Long, of Giles County, Tenn., born 1790, died 1865, and their offspring are Daniel, James, Jane (Kidwell), Eleanor (Bailey), John T., and Archibald (deceased). Mr. McMillin is taking an active interest in the education of his children, affording them far better opportunities than he ever possessed. In 1847 he married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Lucy (Lovell) Scott, of Clay County, Tenn. (born in 1828), and to them have been born Thomas K., Mary (Hestand), Lucy (Hutchens), James (deceased), Cordelia C. (Edwards), Daniel, Benton, and Jennie E. Mr. McMillin is a farmer and trader, owning 550 acres of land, very productive, in a high state of cultivation. The subject was financially ruined by the late war, but by industry and close attention to business has secured a good property. In politics, he is a Democrat. Dan S. McMillin was born in Dade County, Mo., August 1, 1858. At the age of seven years he removed with his parents to Monroe County, Ky., where he now resides. His Father, John T. McMillin, or as he is sometimes called, "Rocky John", was born January 15, 1827, in Jackson County, Tenn. He was a member of Company G, Sixteenth Missouri Infantry, Confederate States Army. He was a son of Patrick K. McMillin, who was born in Maryland in 1788, and was a soldier in the War of 1812; his father, Daniel McMillin, came over from Ireland at an early age and settled in Maryland. He was a soldier in the Revolution, under Gen. Otho H. Williams, in the Maryland line. John T. McMillin married, July 22, 1847, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Lucy (Lovell) Scott, of Jackson (now Clay) County, Tenn. From this union sprang Thomas K., Mary A. (Hestand), Lucy M. (Hutchens), William J. (deceased), Dan S., Cordelia C. (Edwards), Benton, and Jennie E. Dan S. married January 1, 1885, Eva E., daughter of Joseph S. and Sarah (Marrs) Dickerson, of Monroe County. She was born July 12, 1859. Mr. McMillin has been appointed Postmaster at Rockbridge. He is a moral man, but not a member of any church; in politics, he is a Democrat. If I, with sore fingers, might be allowed one editorial comment, I wish these people would have edited things a little better for completeness and duplication. Here is what I have on the Scotts with connections to Monroe County and Dade County. As I said, Julie, I think this is stuff you gave me, but I'm including it in case it might help someone else. 3. Carol, and fellow listers; Unfortunately, there isn't a single Hudspeth (or any variation thereof) mentioned in the book. But the Coe info in the book leads directly to the Hudspeths. Following are the entries on the Coes, Kidwells and Riggs. After that I will include what I have found connecting some of these folks so far. Oops! I pasted the Coe stuff in the wrong place. I meant to put it at the end. They ended up before the Riggs story. Sorry! Benjamin F. Coe was born April 15, 1846 in the Southeast corner of Monroe County, Ky., where he grew to manhood and has always resided. He is the son of Squire Jesse Coe, a native of Clay County, Tenn., born June 5, 1811, and in infancy removed with his parents to Monroe County, his present home, where he has served twenty years as magistrate. His Father, John Coe, removed from Surry County, N. C., to Jackson county, Tenn., in 1809, and died in Cumberland County, Ky., in 1854, at the age of seventy years. He acted as magistrate thirty five years, and high sheriff four years. He was the son of Isaiah Coe, of North Carolina, who died in 1834, at the age of seventy four years. Jesse Coe married Caroline, daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Moore) Murley, of Cumberland County (born April 1, 1809) and their children are Elizabeth A. (Garner), Isaiah, Milton, John J., Margaret (Short), Nancy (McCoy), Benjamin F., and Jesse T. Benjamin F. obtained a common school education at the schools of the vicinity in which he was reared. August 8, 1873, he married Martha M., daughter of Sporry and Nancy (Moore) Smith, of Metcalfe County, born July 29, 1851, and their union has been favored by the birth of Sidney M., Samuel (deceased), Hattie R., Jennie G., John E. H., and Charlie. Mr. Coe served in the capacity of constable for five years, and is the owner of 100 acres of well improved and productive land in good condition and fine state of cultivation. In politics, Mr. Coe is a Democrat. What was the big deal (or anyone's business) with somebody's political persuasion, anyway???????????????????????????????????????????? In my experience, most Democrats want to brag about it, most Republicans want to keep it a secret. Go figure. Isham D. Kidwell was born January 29, 1829 in Monroe County, where he grew up and now resides. His Father, William Kidwell, was born about 1795 in Virginia. At the age of about twelve years, he removed with his parents to Monroe County (then Cumberland), where he resided until his death. He was a son of Matthew Kidwell, formerly of Maryland, and latterly of Virginia. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War under Gen. Morgan. William Kidwell was twice married; his first wife, whom he married about 1818, was Mary F., daughter of Ephraim and Anna (Peak) Dicken. To their union one son and five daughters were born, of whom Isham D. is the fourth child. The marriage of our subject with Sarah A., daughter of John A. and Mary (Paco) Williams, took place June 12, 1851. To them have been born John F., Martin D., Samuel T., Parmelia (Hammel), Nancy C., and Mary F. Mr. Kidwell started life first as a teacher and farmer and afterward as a merchant, in which latter business he has engaged since 1852. By industry and economy he has become the owner of about 600 acres in a fine state of cultivation, besides which he is the owner of a good store, well stocked with marketable goods. He was for several years magistrate and member of the court of claims of Monroe County, and is at present the postmaster at Meshack post office. He is a believer in the doctrines of the Christian Church, and in politics is a staunch Democrat. The only other mention of Kidwells is under the story of Lewis C. Ross, who married Mary A. Williams, dau of Martin and Catherine Kidwell Williams. Later in the same story it is said that Katherine was Dau of William Kidwell and Fannie Dicken. Here is what I have so far on these Coes, with connections to Hudspeths and Poindexters. I am still working on this, and have other members of the Coe and Poindexter families I have yet to clearly connect. If anyone wishes more info on the Hudspeths, contact me privately. I have bunches. Hope this helps. First Generation ---------------------------------------- 1. Timothy Coe. Born in 1715 in Sussex Co, DE. Timothy died in Surry Co, NC. Timothy married Dinah. He was the son of Clisbe Riggs, who was born in North Carolina; located in pioneer times to East Tennessee, where he was a large land owner and slave holder; and he died in 1845. Samuel Riggs married Elizabeth, daughter of William and Tabitha Cheny, of Morristown, (died in 1862, aged fifty six years), and from their union sprang Ellis, Phebe, Newton and Owen, Adeline (deceased), Clisbe, Jane (Felknor), William, Dr. C. Dr. Riggs has ever been compelled to rely upon his own efforts for success in life. He is not connected to any Christian denomination, but is partial to the Baptist Church. In politics, he is identified with the Republican party. The only other mention of the Riggs surname is in the listing of former Monroe County members of the Hose of Representatives (I assume state level, but it does not say), John B. Riggs, 1865-67.

    3. Re: posting by Julie. I am not searching for SCOTT families, I did notice your SPRINGER reference. So if you ever get back to the area of 1700's in Hanover, Louisa, Orange and Albemarle Counties in Virginia you might pick up on the SCOTTs & SPRINGERs. Below is how the SCOTTs work into my line. Also, Hopewell/Hopeful WOOD had a son names Hezekiah WOOD who wed Martha"Patsy" GENTRY on 1july1799. The early GENTRYs have Elizabeth SPRINGER in their line . If you are interested do a search for the Gentry Forum and you will find SPRINGER. If you have problems finding the site let me know and i'll be glad to send the URL from the site. I have nothing more on SPRINGER nor SCOTT. Hope you do well in your search. JA ************************************************** Descendants of ??? Wood 1 ??? 3. Dear Friends; I recently got a book of Monroe Co, KY biographies. Once I started digging into it, and started tracing some families, and cross referencing names, I found another of those migration patterns where families interconnect over time. This pattern goes from Surry Co, NC to Monroe Co, KY to Dade Co, MO The primary surnames I'm covering with this are; Coe, Hudspeth, Savage, Scott, and Poindexter. If any of my fellow listers have a pattern of places or family connections like this, I'd sure like to hear from you, and learn what you've found. If anybody is interested in any of the data from the Monroe Co, KY bios book, the primary names in the book are; Abshire, Barr, Batdorf, Beals, Bedford, Biggerstaff, Bushong, Button, Chism, Cloyd, Coe, Comer, Crawford, Day, Downing, Dunn, Evans, Ferguson, Flippin, Flowers, Fraim, Franklin, Frazier, Gee, Gillenwaters, Goad, Green, Hagan, Harlan, Harris, Hayes, Hestand, Hope, Howard, Jones, Kidwell, Kingery, Kirkpatrick, Leslie, Lloyd, McMillin, Mansfield, Miller, Mitchell, Muncie, Norman, Patterson, Pedigo, Pile, Pitcock, Proffitt, Purcell, Ray, Richardson, Riggs, Rodgers, Ross, Rush, Simmons, Spear, Stephens, Strode, Tooley, Weir, White, Williams, and Wood. I'm not too far into the book yet. I am working through it alphabetically, and am still hung up on the thing I started this e-mail with, and am not past the Coes yet. So if you ask me about anyone past that, all I can share is what's in the book. As Always, Bob Wilson

    3. Hi Bob; We've talked before. That is exactly the route of my Scott ancestors. I've found information about them in Surry Co. and Dade Co., but haven't found much about them in Monroe Co. Would like to know any information about them in KY. Also what is the name of the town they settled near. I've never been able to find out anything more than "Monroe Co." My Scott ancestors were married to Coes, Hudspeths and Poindexters. Can you tell me the title of the book and the author?
