Have any of you wanting a local researcher considered using the research by mail available through the MO State Archives? It's slow, but the price is right. Go to your favorite search engine. Type in "Missouri State Archives" It will take you to their site. There is a form you can download and send in to request various documents. There is also a listing somewhere on their site where you can browse and even download the holdings the archives have for each county. There is about a six week turn-around right now on requests. I believe you can perhaps even e-mail requests to them (which I just always fill out the form they send to me with my documents and send it right back)If some of you feel the folks at the courthouse are not very cooperative, it may be bacause your request would better be served by sending it to the great folks at the archives. My attitude is that's it's been there several hundred yrs - I certainly don't need to get in a hurry to get things. I'm ! more than willing to put up the wait. Nancy--glad to hear from you. Hazel Yates is the one who got me started. She gave me a lot of her notes on the Mitchell family. We go to Greenfield about once a year as my husband's brother still lives there. We probably won't go this year though. I always spend several days at the library and found them to be of great help. I went to the court house when I first started looking about 30 years ago. Have't really had to go since then. I have availed myself of the LDS library center here in Fort Worth. I believe the first will book as been published, but I don't have it. It would be nice if some one would do some research for a nominal fee. Have you used the LDS library or do you have one where you live? This is the cheapest way I know of to get a look at the microfilm records. I think it costs about $3.50 per reel for 6 weeks. Wish you lots of luck. Dorothy

Rebecca, this is just a list of "schollars" evidently young people because my grandmother was not married yet and many were her friends. (Looks like) Amison or Annson Goforth; Luvina Goforth; John T. Goforth; Jasper Goforth; Marrien Goforth Henry McMaster; Harman McMaster; Jessie McMaster;D. McMaster John Ketcherside. Some names are not spelled properly and there are more that are unreadable I hope this will help a little in your research. What Cantrell do you have?
Lurenna Gray is the name on the minutes, but I have old letters to my grandmother signed Luie. She lived with Emily & Sam Tibbetts, who moved to Dade County from Indiana, and returned there. Cantrells mentioned: (Looks like) Amand Cantrell, Ada Cantrell, Maggie Cantrell and (looks like S. J. Cantrill) Mrs. C. Logan This all I know, except the info in letters from Luie Gray. She went to Colorado at one time to be with "Minty". I have no idea who she was. Luie was evidently my grandmother's cousin, probably through the Madren line. Nancy, For now just let me know what problems that you encountered, if any, in your court house research. Then I will decide if I am brave enough or have the patience to give it a try when we are up there in July. My home town is about 90 miles from Greenfield. In case I think of something that you might look-up for me, I will hang onto your email. I have a copy of those Plat Maps also, but they do not help with who owned the land prior to those listed. That is why I asked if there were older ones available. Goldie, Thanks for that bit of information I will print out that email and take it with me along with my Dade County Genealogy Society ID Card. Nancy Beck in Texas
I was recently in Dade county doing some research. The people at the courthouse were very helpful. The county recording office let me look at the books they had (land records, titles, deeds, plats) also some early birth and death records. Probate court had their indexes all put on the computer and is filed by surname. They include ( divorces, adoptions, guardianships, wills, bankruptcies). They did not charge me any thing. Circuit court had records only after 1900 they said the rest were stored in boxes and was not accessible. They charged me $5.00 for a search. The library has a lot of information and are very helpful. They also said if I belong to the County Genealogical Society the court house should not charge a search fee. And I do belong to the society Lots of information has been sent to the Federal archives and many of the large libraries around the country. Goldie Masur
The minutes for the above show: Martha A. Bell, Mary Bell An old letter, dated 4-14, 1878 from Luie Gray to my grandmother, Ematell "Emma" "Tella" Fort, says: Martha is married her mans name is Florid Ellison. they live in Elexandria. He is in the Tombstone business and a Carver. (spelling and punctuation as shown in letter). I don't know if this is Martha Bell-- The name "Bell" rang a bell! Here is an obituary from 1928: MRS. JAMES H. BELL Mary Prudelle Burch was born July 15, 1861. On October 13, 1878, she was married to James Bell. No children were born to them, but they had a part in bringing up other children. Ollie Smith was born in their home, and lived a part of her young life there. In time she was married, and her children also found a home there, especially Lucille Clopton, who became a child of the home. Mr. and Mrs. Bell untied with the Christian church at Corry, under the preaching of Mr. Wilkinson, about 1887. They united with the church at Greenfield in 1909. Mr. Bell at this time is a teacher in the Bible school, and is a well-loved elder of the local church. The disease which caused the death of Mrs. Bell began many years ago, and for twenty years she had been a sufferer, being called upon to bear burdens such as few have to carry. Through it all she was tenderly cared for by Bro. Bell, and was patient and faithful to her trust in her heavenly Father. For her and others like her there remains the rest of those who endure to the end. She went home Friday, September 15, at 3:00 p.m. The funeral service was conducted by Mr. Bundy and Mrs. Crank at the Christian church, and she rests under a mound of flowers in Greenfield cemetery. (Nannie Burch and Della Burch shown on the minutes of the Sabbath School) "Dell" wrote to my grandmother after they left Dade County and moved to Kansas. My mother sent the letters to this James Bell. His letter to Mamma mentions Dell's sister, Nan Watson at Greenfield, Mo., Peora Cantrell McCoy at Everton, MO, Whit and Hartwell Goforth at Ash Grove, Jessie McMasters at Garfield, Washington, and a Bob Stanley at ????Tex(could be Texarkana) I hope this helps in a small way.
