Was Bloomfield Logan buried in Dade or Lawrence County?
Hi List, I am writing today in regards to the post listed below. I do not understand the reasoning behind not wanting to list Professional Reseachers from Dade County to aide out of town researchers in Dade County. Are they saying that there just isn't any professional researchers available or they do not want the competition. If the Genealogical Society does Look-ups for only those records that they have in the library, then there must be someone available to do the others, ie., the courthouse research, the cemetery visits to take photos and stone rubbings, etc. This would only be a plus to all, especially since it takes so long to get a response from the society. You know, as an added bonus, and to please the society and list, perhaps copies of what is found by these professional researchers with the permission of the researcher that requested the look-up, could be given to the society and also posted to the on-line Dade County site as part of a cooperative resource/source building project. For that matter, also, whenever one of us makes a visit to Dade County and we see something that we think could photo or gather info to share, maybe we should also try to do that as well and contribute it to the site. The one thing that I dislike about genealogy today, is the big business aspect of it. You can't research anymore with first paying somone for the right to. The following family is listed in the 1850 census: Dade, MO 1850 Federal Census (INDEX - File 2 of 4) 285b 38 Holmes Biedy* 10 Tennessee pg0279a.txt 285b 34 Holmes Hardy 53 North Carolina pg0279a.txt 285b 36 Holmes Lucinda 18 Tennessee pg0279a.txt 285b 37 Holmes Nancy 13 Tennessee pg0279a.txt 285b 35 Holmes Sarah 35 Tennessee pg0279a.txt 285b 41 Holmes Setha 5 Tennessee pg0279a.txt 285b 40 Holmes Susan 7 Tennessee pg0279a.txt 285b 39 Holmes William 9 Tennessee pg0279a.txt Does anyone know anything more about them? I'm desparately seeking my gg-granfather, William F. HOLMES, who was born 1836 in TN. I can document him from the time he reached Tyler County, TX, in 1858, but can't locate him before this. I believe he may have been in TX before 1858, because this is the year he married. His wife's family had already been in TX for several years, and also was from a different area, than where he is, so I don't think he travelled with them. Also, it doesn't appear that he had any relatives in TX when he arrived, so I'm not sure if he had a reason for going there. However, the above family looks like a prospect that I need to look at a little deeper, since they were all born in TN, except for the "head of the house". The William (above, at age 9), is interesting. In 1850, my gg-grandfather would have been 14 years old, but I know that mistakes have been made either by the transcribers, or by the family just reporting the wrong ages! I look forward to hearing from anyone who may have some more info on this family. Pam <William F. Holmes 1836 TN>Robert W. Holmes 1867 TX>Clayton Holmes>1903 TX>Glenn Holmes 1931 TX>

I should have added that the website address for DAR is: www.dar.org The link for the Library is amongst the links directly under the heading. It has a searchable online catalog. Janet Hunter
Hello Everyone, For anyone in the Metropolitan Washington DC area, or planning research trips here, I thought you'd all be interested to know that the wonderful DAR Library and Museum will be changing their weekend hours as of June 1, 2002. Instead of being open Sunday afternoons, the Library (and Museum) will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays (subject to closing for various events of course). As a resident of northern Virginia this is wonderful news. In addition to an always helpful staff, the library has an extensive collection of family history books (in all their well-known, mostly marginally documented, sometime inaccurate glory), state and county books, other history books, ship list books, etc., a pretty much complete set of census microfilms up through 1900, and some thereafter, the microfilms of Revolutionary War pension files, other miscellaneous microfilms by state and county (such as many NC Quaker MM microfilms, complete set of microfilms of Amelia Co VA wills, microfilms of Virginia land patents, etc.) -- not to mention all of the DAR applications and their supporting files which are chock full of wills, marriage licenses, bible records, miscellaneous clippings, etc. Supporting files are separate from the applications and must be requested at the Library Desk. Microfilms are in a room in the basement, which I didn't discover until I'd been visiting for about two years. Furthermore, it has got to be one of the few remaining libraries on the continent with its before-computerization card catalog still available for perusing. I hope this helps some of you out there. Best Regards, Janet (Baugh) Hunter

I ordered a marriage certificate via the internet on my great grandparents. They kindly responded right away and told me of the wait. When several weeks passed, they emailed me and said when they received the required money, they would send the certificate. It all was done within a month!
