    3. No, Mary and Minervia were half sister. There father Thomas Gillenwater married 2 women by the name of Mary and both Mary's were cousins. One went by the name of Polly. If you do the 9 month thing David was still alive in Jan of 1887 because Maggie was born in Sept of 1887. They may have travel to visit dad and bought some land, planing on coming back to Dade Co in the next spring. Something most of happen either having the baby or David died, with out having the 1890 census there is no way telling when they actually moved to Dade Co MO. There is no way of knowing why Sarah and possible 2 of her bothers were left in Hawkins Co. Several of Mary Kyle's older children by her first marriage were also left behind, even though there were older. This is not the only family that I have that the parents moved and left some of there children behind with grandparents. It makes you wonder if the 2nd wife like them. ----- Original Message ----- From: "bruce james" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, June 15, 2002 5:39 PM Subject: Re: [MODADE] Courtneys of Dade Co. > Jane, > > Do you think it's coincidence that the Mary Gillenwater Courtney listed below has the same last name of Minervia Gillenwater who listed as Sarah Ellen Robinson's mother? I am related to the Courtneys from Washington Co., Stephen Courtney, whose sons Jeremiah and Robert came to Dade Co. at settled in North Twp. I have corresponded with Chuck Courtney. He is the one that told me about the Hawkins Tn. bunch, and I started trying to tie them in the with other courtneys in Dade Co. 3. Dear Fellow Listers; I am seeking the birth place of my Great Grand Father, William D. George b March 1849 MO. I have gleaned this from Gillespie Co., TX census 1880, 1900, 1910. He does not appear on the 1920 census and I assume he was dead. In the 1870's William was a cattle hand on the Moss Ranch in adjacent Llano County, he fought Indians at the battle of Pack Saddle Hill and on Sept. 18, 1879 married my GGM Henrietta (Ettie) Solomon b 1861 GA. William was widowed by 1900 and Ettie's Mother, (the widow of Godwin Solomon b 1813 GA) Mary Jane (Roberts) Solomon b 1833 GA, moved onto the farm to tend the four children; William Lawrence (My GF b July 21, 1880) Euphamia, Enock and Francis George. By 1910 William had sold his farm and relocated across the county in Willow City. He there owned and operated a general store, until it was destroyed by fire. No more is known of William D. George. My block wall has been for years - his birth place. Any one researching this line or believing they may be related is encouraged to reply. David W . 3. Jane/Dorothy, Great information, I appreciate that you have it documented as to where it came from. It helps us to know that there aren't mistakes. I have a 6th child for David Jesse Courtney and Sarah Ellen Robinson; her name is Mabel, however, I have no further information on her. My line is through one of David Marshall's children; Leila Courtney Newkirk. Jane I'd love to know about where you stopped in Greenfield to talk w/the land owner. If she knew David Marshall's kids, she might remember my grandmother. If you will email me directly, I'd love to hear what you have. BTW....I contacted Dorothy about a zip file that I got from a guy who is doing research on Greene Co., VA Courtney's. He said he got it from Chuck in TX. If you don't already have it, there is some valuable information in it. Thank You! Good evening, Dorothy, you have most of Sarah Ellen (Robinson) Courtney information right. But her mother was Menervia Gillenwater, she died shortly after Sarah was born. Powell Robinson then married Mary Kyle Delp, 25 Sept 1859 in Hawkins Co TN. Known Children of Sarah and David Jessie Courtney Lulu 1878 Hawkins Co TN (1880 Hawkins co TN census) ( I have no other information on her.) Thomas K. 2 Oct 1880 Hawkins Co TN (1880 Hawkins Co TN Census) Ida. T. 1882 Hawkins Co. TN (1880 Hawkins Co TN census) David Marshall Courtney May 1885 Hawkins Co TN. Maggie E. Sept 1887 ( on the 1900 Dade Co MO census says born in TN, probably Hawkins Co.) On the 1900 Dade Co MO census says Sarah had 5 children and all 5 living. The family must have moved to Dade Co MO. shortly after Maggie birth. Sarah Courtney bought land from her father Powell Robinson in Aug 1886. David may have died in Hawkins Co TN and that may be why the family moved to Dade Co. No head stone has been found for him. Even though there is an unmark grave next to Sarah's headstone. Sarah, David and Thomas own land north of Greenfield on road H area. I visit there this pass May, I stop to talk with a lady where I thought that Sarah might have own land. The woman I talk to remembered going to school with David's children, but none of the Courtney's live in the area now To save you some time. There is no will for Sara Ellen or Powell Robinson. Sara gave her land to Ida before she died. Ida never married. I have not found a paper trail for David Jessie, all land transaction were in Sara's name. In Feb of 1998 I corresponded with Chuck Courtney of Austin, Texas. He claims David Jessie is the son of Russell and Elizabeth (Henry) Courtney. David had one bother named James Polk, there may be more, but I have not done any more research on this line. David should be listed with his family on the 1870 Hawkins Co TN census. Chuck is from James Polk line. 3. We were in Greenfield in May 02. All the records had been returned to the courthouse. Some were not available for research because they were still packed in the shipping cartons. The library hopes to get a micro-film copy of all that stuff eventually. The land records are all available for research. Goldie

    1. [MODADE] question regarding visiting Dade Co.
    2. Gayle
    3. We were in Dade County a bit over a year ago, and many of their records were out being microfilmed. I needed land records, some were back but not the index. Does anyone know if they are back in the courthouse? I am not sure about probate records ... my husband stopped at that office and the office staff checked an index and said none of our names were in the probate index. It was late in the day and we went on to the library before it closed. Wish I had had more time.. Bruce, you asked about prep work. I would say it is wise to do everything and anything you can at home before you go. Which to me means at least having read EVERY census for the time frame your people were in the county, note where they lived and look at a map and be versed on the various towns and townships, and note if they are along a county line in the event you need to cross over to another courthouse. If you aren't going for a while, you might even want to order in the probate and land indices from the LDS (if they have them) so that you will have an idea about what you might find when you get there. I am a former genealogy librarian. I found many people dropped into the county museum or library with a name and no idea when the people came to the area, where they lived in the county, if any other family members resided in the area. Every bit of information you have at the tip of your fingers will help anyone helping you while you are on a trip. Be sure and take a family group sheet showing each person you are searching as an adult and as a child, and a pedigree chart. Those were my biggest help when I was working. At times, I couldn't find anything on one individual, but my looking at family group sheets I could recognize the name of a brother or sister-in-law or a son or daughter-in-law to get us started. We stayed at Springfield when we were in that area. There is an excellent genealogy library there I understand. Good luck! g2

    3. Goldie, Thank you for the link. However, when I've searched it in the past, and I went through it again, I couldn't find a phone # for the DCGS. I found many phone #'s, and names in the DCGS page, but they were all for different things, ie. research requests and workshop info. Neither had a phone #. I truly could be blind, but the best I could do was the chamber of commerce who I will try again tomorrow. Thanks for humoring me :o) Lori ----- Original Message ----- From: Raleigh Masur Sent: Friday, June 14, 2002 7:10 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MODADE] visiting Dade Co. http://www.rootsweb.com/~modade/modade.htm Lori, The web page above has all the info about the Dade County Genealogy Society that you have been seeking including their phone number plus a lot more valuable info about Dade County.
