However, here is the one that appeared in the Greenfield Vedette in Missouri. It is said to be from Visalia, which makes me think that the Vedette copied a Visalia obituary, but I could be wrong. "Obituary -- M.C. SEXTON -- August 24, 1924 appeared in Greenfield Vedette (I guess). Visalia, Calif., Aug. 8 -- M.C. ("Uncle Mack") Sexton passed away at the family home on Eluiza Street, Visalia, on August 2, 1924, at the age of 72 years and 10 months. The decased leaves a widow and a host of friends to mourn his loss. "Uncle Mack" left Dade county some eight years ago, locating near Porterville, where he lived for about three years; then he and his good wife [no name <sigh>] moved to Visalia. where he bought a nice little home. But Uncle Mack was not one of those who thought only of an earthly home, but had prepared himself for that home not made with hands, and had certainly lived up to the oath he took before T. B. Larimore, when the latter preached one of his soul-awakening sermons at Bona some years ago. His widow has the sympathy of Visalia and community. She was ever faithful and ready to do anything she could for him, until God saw fit to take him away. The deceased was buried in a nice plot in Visalia cemetery. He was laid to rest with a perfect smile on his face. Rev. Zook, pastor of the first Christian church of Porterfield, spoke the words of comfort to the sorrowing widow and friends, taking for his text, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." --a Friend." Having kin in Visalia and kin in Dade, I can tell you that those words "Visalia, Calif." are indicating location of the death only. Also the content of the obit tells me it was written locally in Dade. At one point it's "Porterville" (correct) and then "Porterfield", an unlikely mistake for Visalia. As an aside, I thought my kin moved early to Visalia, but yours was much earlier. Made me wonder if mine moved there because they had heard that it was a good place to go. Hello Everyone, Lori ([email protected]) has passed to me a memoriam for Elizabeth Ruddick Newkirk, wife of Abraham Taylor Newkirk. She died in 1931. Janet, I don't know about Missouri, but yes, in fact there were Quaker communities in Kansas, one of which was in my home town of Riverton and Lowell, Kansas, both located in the southeast corner of Kansas. It actually came to Lowell first, I think, then expanded to Riverton, which at that time went by the name of Vark. There was even a Quaker Academy in Lowell, and there still exists Friends Churchs in Riverton and Lowell. This is about 90 miles from Dade County, which might seem far for those times, but not totally out of reach. Just a thought. I think that a written history exists which will no doubt list the names of those families that help start the Academy, etc. You could find out more about that through the Cherokee County message/query boards or mailing lists or contact the genealogical societies in Galena or Columbus, Kansas. You might even query directly to the Friends Church in Lowell and ask their historian, I assume that they would have one, if the church had a directory of other Quaker Churches or communities in the area, etc. Bev Clark [email protected] wrote: > Hello Everyone, > > Lori ([email protected]) has passed to me a memoriam for Elizabeth Ruddick > Newkirk, wife of Abraham Taylor Newkirk. Our family's oral history also said that McCuel had a daughter named Sallie, but I am beginning to have my doubts. A few years ago, a relative of mine visited the cemetery in CA where McCuel and Sarah are buried. At the time of McCuel's death, the cemetery has a record of payment for 2 grave sites for him and his wife by a "Sallie Sexton." No payments were made at the time of Sarah's death. In a genealogy research book I have it lists Sallie/Sally as a common nickname back then for Sarah. We are starting to think the Sallie we have heard about in relation to McCuel may really be his wife, Sarah Swingle, not his daughter. Is the "Aunt Sally" you mentioned the name your mother-in-law knew McCuel's wife Sarah by?

Hello Everyone I'm going to respond to both Lynda and Jackie in this one email. I have since obtained the 1880 census information for Benjamin and Permelia Marsh and for John and Mary Olinger of Greene Co., Campbell Township, page 274B Regarding the Olingers, Lynda I assume you are referring to the above Olingers who in 1880 have children: Mary E., James H.A., George W. (married Lillie Marsh?), Chas. H., H.C. Martha, and Joseph?? Did this family move en masse after 1880 and found the town of Olinger near the Dade/Lawrence Co border? Do you know where in the Olinger family fits Frances E. "Fannie" Olinger who married Edwin McKinsey "Mack" Sexton April 06, 1904 in Olinger, Lawrence Co., Missouri. "Uncle Mack" was brother of my grandfather Charley Sexton, who was married to Lucy Marsh, niece of Lillie Marsh Olinger. Fannie and Uncle Mack, as well as my grandparents are buried at Shiloh, just barely in Dade Co. Here we "border families" are all tangled up again! Regarding Jackie's comments on Benjamin and Permelia's children "Frankey and Delaware", I believe that Delaware was James L., in his parents pension applications, and since he is on the 1870 census and not 1880, I assume that he has passed away and probably buried in an unmarked grave at Pennsboro or on the family farm. He was only a month old in 1870 and perhaps had been given a temporary name or nickname. Regarding Lillie changing her name from Frankey, I bet Lillie was a nickname or derivation of her middle name. I only have "E" as an initial. Franky was undoubtedly named after her grandmother Franky Murrell Williams, buried Shiloh. Also the "Frisby P." in the 1880 census is Presly P. I'm not sure which transcription you are looking at. The LDS 1880 census has Presly correct, though I have several other problems with that wonderful set of CDs, like my Letsy Shelton is Betsy, etc. Jackie said -- "I found a George F. Olinger in the 1920 in Saline, Miami Co, MO with a wifeLucy and 29 year old son Charles. If you think this is your George, then he must have remarried after Lillie died." I doubt this is he because a 29 year old son Charles would have had to have been Lillie's child as she died in 1893, and he isn't listed in Benjamin Marsh' probate papers by son Presley Patterson "Pat", who was administrator. But thanks for looking! Thanks to all of you! I now have all of Benj and Permelia's childrens and their spouses, birth, marriage, parents and most death/burial information (not George Olinger on the latter).
