Eileen; Hi Cuz, it's been a while! Hope you and Joe are well. From what I gather, folks have been tricking out to California from Dade County off and on since the Gold Rush. Interest in Tulare County started in the 1880's and quite a few left during the panic of 1893 and '94. After that, folks left to join relatives. There was another big surge during the Hoover Depression. My Uncle, Harry Wilson, went out there to seek his fortune in the 30's, but he caught Scarlet Fever, which fried his mind, and Grandma and a couple of my other uncles went to bring him back. I guess the big draw to Tulare County was the big agricultural economy, which seemed to do well despite the national problems, and the fantastic weather year round. If you look at American History, you can pretty well track migrations with economic panics and depressions. It's like everybody gets the same idea; "Times are hard, lets go West for a fresh start." The first really bad depression in America was in the 1830's and early '40's, which coincides with when many of the first families of Dade County showed up. Isn't that right? Hiram Newton Cantrell came to Los Angles in the early 1905.....and some of his children went to Visalia to live......Hiram was from Dade County, he was the son of Elijah Cantrell and Sarah Cantrell
I live in Visalia and we have some Cantrell's on our street. I hear their ancestors knew some of mine who also came from Dade & Cedar County. Louise
What do you know about the Cantrell's that also went out to Visalia??
Well, I'm very interested in what was just said about the high tide of Dade Countians who went to Tulare County. My Great Grandfather was one of them. I knew that he moved out because other family had gone there, but what on earth took them out there? My GGrandfather was David Waldo Duncan-his first wife was Ardena Wilson. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 07, 2002 3:42 PM Subject: Re: [MODADE] Re: Caroline Matilda (White) Wilson > Jim; > > Sorry to take so long to get back with you. Jim; Sorry to take so long to get back with you. I've been out of town all week. I have it that Bunk died in 1938 in Tulare Co, CA. Apparently, he joined the high tide of Dade Countians who went to Tulare County. I've read where there were so many of them there, they had a Dade County Picnic there in Visalia every year. That tradition lasted into the 1960's. Do you know if Caecilia is a descendant of Bunk and Caroline's? Bunk was the son of James Calvin Wilson (May 1832 - 22 Nov 1911) and his unknown first wife, who died sometime between Bunk's birth in 1857 and the 1860 census. James Calvin remarried to Mary E. Amos about 1860. Thanks, Bob

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CKB.2ACE/1577 Message Board Post: I am searching for a marriage record for William Powhatton "Hatton" Reich. He later married to Laura Hammons in Dade County Sept. of 1898 but he already had three children by then, William, Anna and Birdie/Bertie. So it is apparent that he was married earlier, to whom. The Reich family lived around the Rock Prairie area of Dade County in 1880. His father was William B. Reich and believe his mother was Mary A. Campbell. There seems to be a problem solving Birdie/Bertie, whether she was actually a child of Laura. In 1900 Birdie was 2 years old and would be three in December. Then in 1910 another Birdie shows up as only ten years old which would place her born ca 1900 and Laura's child. Did the first Birdie die and Laura had a child and renamed it Birdie for the one who passed away??? Any help here will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Pam, Sinking Creek Cemetery is located about one and one-half mile east of Everton and about one-half mile south of U.S. Hwy. 160. The turn off from Hwy. 160 is NOT highway M. It is a rural farm road, that unfortunately I do not have the name for. If you are approaching from the east (Ash Grove) there is a sign that says "Sinking Creek Cemetery" with an arrow pointing south (left) at the intersection of the road you would need to turn on. This road is about two miles west of the Dade-Greene County line on Hwy. 160. If you are approaching from the west (Everton) the sign marking the turnoff is not visible because of trees. But, if you get to the intersection of Hwy. MM that goes to Lawrenceburg and Halltown you went too far east. Turn around and head back west and look for the cemetery turnoff sign on your right. I seem to recall a tall radio or cell-phone tower being just east of the road going to the cemetery, but I may be wrong about this. Once you get on the right road and headed south from Hwy. 160, you will travel about one-half mile south until you see another cemetery sign that points west. Make a right turn on this road and the cemetery entrance will be about 100 yards on your right. If you continue west on this same road it will take you into the south edge of Everton. I was just at this cemetery one week ago looking up gravesites for SULLIVAN, UNDERWOOD, and MOORE ancestors. Now I am back home in Calif. I hope this helps you in reaching the cemetery. I had my in-laws with me giving me the directions as I drove and I made a few mental notes of the distances from my odometer. Therefore, my distance measurements may be off a little. Since you will be near Springfield, I would suggest that you first visit the Springfield-Greene County Regional Library. They have a book in their genealogy department that lists all of the tombstone inscriptions and their location for Sinking Creek Cemetery. The book also has a surname index. This will save you considerable time as the cemetery as a lot of gravestones. You will also find similar books for the other cemeteries of Dade County that were published by the Dade County Historical Society several years ago. The library is located about one-quarter mile south of the James River Parkway (U.S. Hwy. 60) at 4653 South Campbell. Make a right turn from Campbell at the first traffic signal south of Hwy. 60 and then a quick right on the frontage road that will take you up to the library parking lot. This library is a treasure-chest for information on most all of the counties in southwest Missouri. They also have all of the Missouri census microfilms, including 1930, plus the 1890 thru 1920 Soundex rolls for Missouri. Ken Soper Apple Valley, CA
