I am a mail list administrator for many counties most are in Southern IL and I am also the Southern Region ILGenWeb Regional Coordinator for 27 counties. All mail lists I have are great , you the subscribers do a great job helping each other, Johnson, Shelby, Union, Randolph, Montgomery in IL and Cole Co MO all these I have had for a time. I have now become Perry Co IL , Edwards Co IL and Wabash Co IL mail list administrator. I take orphaned county message boards. I have Cole Co MO, Union Co IL, Johnson Co IL, Randolph Co IL, Bond Co IL, Shelby Co IL , Lee Co IL and now Edwards , Wabash Co IL. I will be trying to Gateway the Ancestry.com message boards to the county mail lists With Rootswebs new mail system you have to be a subscriber to the mail list , NOW I get alot of spam in the mail list, you do not see this because I have to go to the mail list page and reject them, many of these spammers now use genealogy terms to get your attention so I have to open it to see if it is legite email to the county mail list. I have never been the MAIL POLICE that is I do not intervene much reason being we have no problems, but we do get new subscribers and sometimes the old subscribers need a update. I want you all to remember the following when emailing any of the MAIL LISTS. 1. Subject of your email must be about the COUNTY you are emailing if it is SHELBY CO IL your subject MUST BE ABOUT SHELBY CO IL and should be in the text of your message this goes for every County. 2. How important is your SUBJECT LINE of your email , DO NOT USE ROLL CALL , type in your SURNAMES in the SUBJECT LINE. Myself I do not want to go thru 100 messages named ROLL CALL , I do want to read messages such as CASEY, MOORE, TOLER. if the SUBJECT is a location type the LOCATION in your subject line PERRY CO IL HISTORICAL SOCIETY or AMERICAN LEGION CEMETERY, DONGOLA IL. 3. MOST IMPORTANT Genealogy is not just what happend 100 years ago in your county it is what happened yesterday, today, births, annoucements, deaths , etc. are all part of genealogy and each counties history. Use the County mail list for that , if you need to reply to an annoucement EMAIL that person personally NOT THE LIST. 4. IF you have found links that you feel would help others in their research please email them to the list in the SUBJECT LINE type NEW RESEARCH LINK . Remember all the mail lists get archived example: IF you type in Roll Call , Edwards Co IL, you will see all messages named Roll Call. Now if you type in Casey, Montgomery Co IL , you will see messages archived with the name Casey. I hope you all find that ancestor or descendant , that you have been looking for, I know you will read all this as constructive advice on OUR mail lists that we are subscribers to. Tim: What might be of some little interest is the fact that the Rakers in Shelby County IL (Oconee) and the Rackers in Cole County MO are directly related. I just finished 12 years of research and have printed a history book of the Rakers families beginning ca 1650 to the arrival of the Rakers in Oconee IL, and Jefferson City, Taos and Wardsville MO.
