Hi, my name is Mark Vernon and I am researching the Hunter and Vernon families that lived in Cole and Moniteau counties. In particular I am looking at the Hunter family, who came from Tennessee and Illinois in the late 1830s. There was an Abraham sr and Abraham jr. Abraham Hunter Jr. later moved to Laclede Co. and was a Justice of the Peace. He was around for the making of Moniteau County out of Cole Co. His sons, James Crocket Hunter, John Franklin Hunter, Isaac Newton Hunter and Alexander A. Hunter, all served in the Civil War for the Union. This family intermarried with the Enloe family. Russellville seems to be the place that many of them lived. The family of Josiah Moses Vernon and his wife, Prudence Emily Hunter, lived for a time in Cole and Moniteau Co. during the 1880s. Prudence was a daughter of Abraham Hunter jr. Abraham Hunter Sr. was marrie to Mary Marks and Abraham jr. was married to Sallie Kyle. I would be happy to hear from anybody studying these families. I am in the Seattle area and can do obit lookups for anyone with family who might appear in Pacific Northwest Newspapers on microfilm, seem going back many years. I am very interested in any Cole County newspapers on microfilm and if they might be available. -Mark Vernon Seattle, WA ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. There were a number of Vernons in Miller County as well. Don't know if they are tied to your Vernon family. There are obituaries posted on www.millercountymuseum.org , a web site that is still under construction. We have limited content up right now. You can find the obituaries (indexed by deceased and by father/mother) on the "Library" page. A second volume of obits is in the process and will be up within the next 3 months.
