The Daily Post, Jefferson City, Mo., Monday, August 7, 1916 Mrs. Priscilla Stone, mother of Contractor T.J. Stone and former Prosecuting Attorney, R. Price Stone, died last evening at 6:45 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Samuel Sone, 1404 West Main Street, after a long illness. Mrs. Stone was born in Belleville, Ill., January 31, 1837. She was married to James A. Stone in 1853 and they came to Missouri to reside. The union was blessed with five children, four of whom T. J. of this city, R. Price of Eldon, Mrs. Samuel Sone of this city, and Mrs. Ellen Bragg of Hannibal, Mo., live to mourn her death. Her husband joined the Confederate army shortly after the outbreak of the Civil War and was killed at the battle of Helena, Ark. Mrs. Stone made her home at Russellville, Mo., up to 31 years ago when she moved to this city to reside. Twenty-one years ago she went to her daughter’s home and had been living there since that time. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock at the Sone home. Rev. Hardesty of Middletown, Mo., an old friend of the family, will conduct the last sad rites. Burial will be made in Riverview Cemetery. Mrs. Stone was a splendid type of woman. During her long illness she bore her suffering with Christian fortitude. She had a wide acquaintance.
The Daily Post, Jefferson City, Mo., Wednesday, July 26, 1916 “Uncle Henry” Carroll, an aged and respected negro and civil war veteran, was found dead in his yard on Elm Street, about 8:30 last night by members of his family. “Uncle Henry” had been feeble and in ill health for some time but was not bedfast. It was thought that he had walked from his porch to near the front of the yard, where he was suddenly stricken and fell over an embankment. He was 74 years of age and for years had been doing janitor work about town. His last position was at the Washington school. During the civil war Carroll volunteered and was a member of one of the Negro Regiment which went forth to help free the race from bondage. He saw action and went all through the south. He was an interesting old negro and well liked. His wife died during the winter and he has not been well since that time. Several children will mourn him. An inquest was held this morning by Coroner Feller. The verdict was that he died from natural causes.
The Daily Post, Jefferson City, Tuesday, December 26, 1916 Judge Geo. B. Miller, war veteran, former deputy county recorder, former city clerk and former assistant superintendent of Yellowstone National Park and police judge, died after a brief illness Sunday morning at 11:30. Judge Miller was taken seriously ill with intestinal trouble about midnight and despite all that medical science could do he sank rapidly. George Bickerton Miller died where he was born, May 15, 1843. He was educated in the public schools in this city. When the civil war broke out young Miller ran away to join the army. He fell in the hands of Confederate soldiers and was sentenced to be shot as a spy. He succeeded in escaping and shortly afterwards joined the Union Army. He acted as orderly about the time General Price made his famous feint at the capital. He saw action in the woods south of this city. Later he became lieutenant in Company B 45th Regiment Missouri Volunteers. He campaigned with Hood in Tennessee. After the war he returned to this city for a short time but was appointed assistant superintendent of Yellowstone Park under Colonel Wear and held that position until the park passed from the supervision of the Interior Department to the War Department. Then he returned to Jefferson City. He was for some time deputy circuit clerk and recorder under the late Major W. H. Lusk. He was twice city clerk. Once under Mayor Riddler and later he was appointed by Mayor F. H. Binder. He was for five years a police judge. Mayor Heinrichs first appointed him but was subsequently elected twice. A sister and a brother, Mrs. Louise Bragg, and Dr. Phil T. Miller, are his only surviving relatives. He was never married. Judge Miller told many interesting stories about life in Jefferson City in the early sixties. The story published in the Christmas edition of The Daily Post Saturday evening about the Yuletide season here in ’64 was related by him. The judge was well liked, being a splendid and kindhearted gentleman. The funeral took place this afternoon at two o’clock. Rev. McDonald of the Methodist church conducted the services, assisted by Rev. Geo. L. Barnes, rector of Grace Episcopal Church. Burial was made in Woodland. The pallbearers were A. Brandenberger, H. B. Church, Jr. L.S. Parker, F. H. Phillips, Jas. H. Lay and R. L. Berry. The city officers were honorary pallbearers.
The Daily Post, Jefferson City, Mo., Thursday, July 13, 1916 Carl Butzer, employed as fireman on the steamboat Lieutenant Lewis, and a brother of Phillips Butzer, employed as electrician with the light company here, fell from the boat and was drowned near Chamois yesterday. Butzer was well known in this city, where he visited his brother quite often. His home is in Mary’s Home. The boat was coming up the river near Chamois when Butzer was missed by his fellow employees. One of the men ran to the back of the boat and saw Butzer in the water about 300 yards behind the boat. He went down before they could reach him. The men made every effort to recover the body but after several house’ work gave up the search. He had been suffering from dizziness for the last few weeks and it was thought that he was seized with one of the spells and fell into the water. He was 24 years of age and had been employed as a steamboat man for the past four years. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Butzer, were notified and came here today. His brother, Phillip resides in Washington Park here. He was a nephew of Mrs. Mary A. Ruthven. The steamer Lieutenant Lewis stopped here at noon today for a short time and the men told of the accident.
