It has another sign "A vacant Room". The names on the back of the picture show that the people were from various states (Arkansas, Ohio, Illinois, Arkansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee). I do not know where this photo was taken or why the group had their photo taken there, but there certainly was a Claybook House that was used as a sort of hotel in the late 1800s or early 1900s.

After seeing more and more orphaned children situations, I think it was probably common practice for the 'guardian' to have accepted whatever money the children received as payment for their upbringing and care--and I'm sure the extra hands were very appreciated as well. For an interesting sidenote, the children were sent to live with other family members (still looking into this). Anyway, the most intriguing thing about the whole situation is that there is a story that remains untold.

I have a couple of what if's to throw in to the pot... My gggrandfather was William H. Arnold, he came out to the area you are describing, as I understand it, with his two uncles -- Lewis and Thomas and their families, and with his aunt Nancy, m. Rev. William Rice, who preached at Little Shoal Church. William's mother was Susannah Hughes, daughter of Rowland Hughes, and her sister Betsy was married to the Thomas mentioned above. So, I am curious now to know if perhaps some Hughes cousins came out to the area at the same time. I know Lewis first came out from Woodford KY in about 1827, and I know that they all claimed homesteads about 1837. I am curious about the "Arnold / Blue Eagle" you mentioned. Where exactly was that? I would also love to get access to the aerial photo you mentioned...is that possible? Thanks again! Nancy K. Arnold Fernley, NV

William Rice who was a preacher at Little Shoal Church. Just a caution... sometimes things do happen, but remember that our own times color our suspicions. These folks were out in the middle of it together...and I believe mostly did take care of each other and were accountable in a very real way to one another-- we are the ones who can't piece enough info together to really know what happened...sometimes...so try to think positively? Nancy and Mary were sisters. Nancy's granddaughter married Mary's son. In 1880 Sarah Marley is on the census with Daniel and Mary as Daniel's mother in-law. Nancy's grandson has a letter that Nancy wrote her mother in 1857 it was sent to Sarah Marley and in the letter it calls her mother. The letter also mentioned a brother Jesse Hooten who went down south with Nancy's husband Ben. We don't know who Nancy's and Mary's father was. On Mary's death cert. it said her father was Mr. Houten. Any help would be great! Thank you Mary

Christine, I find Chandler on 2 old maps. It is located in Township 52 north, Range 31 and in the SW of section 21. An older map shows it was probably an old RR town. It is on the old Burlington RR between Kearney and Liberty very near highways 69 and 33, as stated by Marsha. I found a Timothy Dale and a Weekly Dale having original land grants in Sections 7, 17 and 18 dated in the 1830's. This is in Fishing Township. Hello, Does anyone know where Chandler, Missouri is? I cannot find it on my atlas. My great-uncle, Monte DALE had lived in Mosby and Excelsior Springs most of his life but died at the county farm in Chandler in 1957 and is buried there, according to my notes. I would like to find out how I might access records to learn more about when he came there. Monte had been a professional boxer and was apparently quite a colorful character around Excelsior Springs at one time and he is certainly one of the most colorful characters in my family tree so I would very much like to learn more about his life. Chandler Missouri......I have a hunch that it is an area rather than a town.
