She was a sister to my grandfather, William Thomas Lamb. She was married to Pleasant for only 6 years. I found the marriages at the Clinton Co., MO courthouse. She married Pleasant Wade Oct. 2 1870 and then she married James Sharp on May 24, 1876. This article came from the Liberty Tribune, Aug. 16, 1889. Paradise--Joe Wade dropped in upon us the other day and stated his grandfather, John Wade, came out from KY 63 years ago and entered a tract of land near Walnut Grove. John Wade had 7 boys, Peyton, John, Ward, David, Pleasant, Berry and Joseph. The first five of these entered land near Gosneyville (later became Paradise) and the last 2 near Kearney and Walnut Grove. The 7 sons had 72 children and these children, taking the cue from such fruitful parentage, have gone forth on the Biblical errand with alacrity and delight, until, like the patriarch of old, John Wade stands up the revered head of over 600 descendants. They have scattered themselves over the country. There is a Wade Cemetery near Kearney but I haven't found it yet. I was hoping that I could find where Pleasant was buried. Dolores

The marriage license was recorded in Eastern Clay County. This might help me figure out the legal name of a Hall I am looking for in the 1880 time frame from either Clay or Cape Girardeau County. Thanks!
About a year ago, an offer was posted here to look up names in an index to original land records for Clay County. If anyone is still offering to do that. I'd like to have a lookup for the following name in the Index to the Clay County Original Land Grants. Samuel White Malott I gather that all I will get is a description of the tract of land, no date. But does the plat book itself carry more details? With a name from the index, will I then be able to find the information in a plat book available at the Clay County archive? (The S.W. Malott land is indicated in the 1877 Historical Atlas.) Thanks, Sylvia Marshall Wees

Unknown date of obituary, unknown source. I found this photocopy in the files of my great-aunt, Elizabeth Dyer Lay (1889-1971). I do not know if or how I am related to Robert Steele Withers, but I have STEELE, DYER, WITHERS and WILSON in my family. Any info would be appreciated. "ROBERT STEELE WITHERS Robert Steele Withers died on January 29, 1958, at his farm home near Liberty, where he was born on April 19, 1875. The grandson of Abijah Withers, who settled here in 1834, he graduated from William Jewell College in 1898 and achieved recognition as a progressive Clay County farmer and a local historian. A popular story teller, Mr. Withers was in demand as a speaker and enjoyed recreating the past for many audiences. In his later years he contributed to local newspapers and to the "Missouri Historical Review," where his articles, dealing principally with pioneer activities, were enhanced with his own drawings. A charter member of the Clay County Historical Society, Mr. Withers became third vice president of the State Historical Society on October 19, 1956 and on June 9, 1957, he represented the Society at the dedication of the Liberty Historical Marker on the campus of William Jewell College."

"The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Thursday, November 19, 1903 DR. CHAPMAN'S WIDOW DEAD. Mrs. Frances Mildred CHAPMAN, widow of Dr. A. L. CHAPMAN, died at the family home, 1227 Holmes street, yesterday morning. She had been in poor health for several years and since the death of her husband six months ago had been almost constantly confined to her home. Bronchitis, which she acquired only a few days ago, was the immediate cause of death. Mrs. CHAPMAN was a native of Missouri, being born in Clay county in 1832. Her father was Wade MOSBY, a Kentuckian, who was one of the pioneers of Clay county and after whom the town of Mosby was named. In 1855 she was married to Dr. CHAPMAN by Rev. Moses E. LORD, the first minister of the Christian church in the West. Mrs. CHAPMAN was one of the organizers of the Forest Avenue Christian church. The death of her husband, Dr. CHAPMAN, occurred May 15 last. His estate was valued at about $260,000, one-half of which went to Mrs. CHAPMAN. In the doctor's will was a strange clause. He had a son named Walter who had been absent from home for years and of whose whereabouts nothing was known. It was known, however, that he had married and had two children and the clause in the will provided for the sale of certain property, the proceeds with other money specified, to go to them. Mrs. CHAPMAN leaves three sons in this city, the fourth, Walter, being still missing. Those here are Arthur, member of the state legislature; Homer, a deputy sheriff, and Campbell, a deputy marshal. The funeral will be held from the residence Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Dr. PINKERTON of the First Christian church will officiate. Burial will be in the family lot at Forest Hill cemetery. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this person but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) ======================================================

HILL, JAMES, RALSTON "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, January 6, 1899 FUNERAL OF S. J. RALSTON The funeral services over the remains of the late Samuel J. RALSTON, who died at his old home in Englewood, between Kansas City and Independence, Wednesday afternoon, will be held from the family residence Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The services will be conducted by Dr. MADESIRE. The deceased was a charter member of Independence lodge A. F. and A. M. and was also a member of Royal Arch chapter, the members of which order will have charge of the funeral. Interment will be made in the cemetery at Independence. Samuel RALSTON was well known in Jackson County. He came here in 1840 and had passed the last fifty-eight years of his life in this vicinity. He was born in Ireland, where, at that time, there was a great deal of trouble. He was sent to the United States by an uncle when he was 16 years old. Upon his arrival in North Carolina, he began to farm, and a few years later married. With the opening of the west he moved to Missouri and settled in Jackson County, two miles east of Independence. He was the father of one child by his first wife. That child, John, is now living in St. Louis. A few years after he had settled in this county, he married Miss Mary C. HILL and eight children were the result of this union: Fedora, Sam, Annie (Mrs. Frank JAMES), Adam, Hugh, Kate, Harry M. and Margaret. The deceased took no part in the civil war, with the exception of the fight at Rock creek, a few miles distant from this city. In that fight, he was wounded. Mrs. Annie JAMES, wife of the famous exbandit king, Frank JAMES, who is a daughter of the deceased, arrived at Independence last night to attend her father's funeral. (Obit includes drawing of Colonel Samuel RALSTON) ====================================================== (I have no connection with this person but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) ======================================================
I have the 1877 Historical Atlas with the Clay County township land sections sections printed out in book form, but I know there must be section maps for other years. I have a photocopy of one copied in 1937 or 1945 when the DAR--in their cemetery study-- reported on gravesites moved from Township 51, Range 32 and it has the same overall appearance as the earlier one. Can anyone tell me for what years section maps with proprietor's names are available and, most importantly, WHERE they can be seen. Thank you, Sylvia Wees in Montreal

Surnames: Gow Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hMB.2ACI/826 Message Board Post: M. D. Gow, a veteran of the late war, and a farmer and stock-raiser who makes a specialty of growing fruit, has a farm of one hundred and twenty acres on section 5, township 53, range 30, Clay County. In his fine orchard, comprising some sixteen hundred trees, two hundred are fine varieties of peach, and the remainder are principally apple trees. Mr. Gow also grows small fruits and grapes extensively. Our subject is one of ten children, whose parents were Arthur and Susan (McGinness) Gow. The father, who has been a resident of Missouri for sixty-two years, has forty-five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His own family comprised six sons and four daughters, he was himself one in a family of six sons and four daughters, and it is a singular coincidence that our subject, like his father and grandfather, has also been blessed with six sons and four daughters. During the late civil conflict, our subject enlisted among the first in 1861 in the Missouri State Guards under Capt. Thomas McCarty, J. H. Hughes’ regiment and Stack’s brigade. He took part in the battle of Carthage, July 5, 1861, in the battle of Wilson Creek, of the same year, and in the battle of Corinth. He was taken prisoner February 12, 1862, at Springfield, but made his escape on the 17th of the following March, joining Price’s army in Arkansas. Beside his valiant service in the Confederate army, Mr. Gow was in the war with Mexico in 1847, being a member of Company I, Magruder’s battery, First Artillery. On his return from Mexico, the yellow fever broke out on the vessel, from the effects of which there were sixteen deaths. Our subject’s grandfather was also a soldier, serving under Gen. Harrison in the War of 1812, and lost his life at Ft. Meigs, Ohio. Mr. Gow was born in Clay County, December 23, 1831, and was married in 1865. He has the following children: L. D., who resides with his grandfather, and is a general farmer; Viola, who lives at home; C. W., who is attending college; Kate, residing with her grandparents; Abram E., who is in the same business with his father; Collie, also an attendant at college at Lawson; Roy and three others remaining at home. Alexa Marshall, a stepdaughter, is teaching school and has been successful in that line for the past ten years, her education having been obtained at some of the best institutions of learning in Missouri. For four years Mr. Gow served his fellow-citizens as Justice of the Peace, was School Director for sixteen years, and School Clerk for ten years. He is greatly interested in the success of the Democratic party, for the nominees of which he deposits his ballot, and is a member of the Christian Church. Mrs. Gow belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Portrait and Biographical Record of Clay, Ray, Carroll, Chariton, and Linn counties, Missouri, Chapman Bros., 1893, pg. 690.

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, July 2, 1897 TEN-CENT BURIALS PAY. City Physician COFFIN says the undertaker who secured the contract to bury the city's pauper dead at 10 cents each will not lose money. On the other hand, he figures it out that there is a considerable profit accruing to the funeral director handling the city cases at any price stipulated in a contract. "About 125 people die at the City hospital each year," said Dr. COFFIN. "Only about 20 percent of these bodies are buried at the contract price. The entire cost of such burial, including the price of the grave, is $4.50. Those which are buried at the city's expense are generally the bodies of babies. The relatives or friends of the great majority of the other deceased persons, 80 per cent it was last year, call for their remains. The undertaker who had the contract last year received an average of $35 for each pauper case of the 80 per cent mentioned. This would bring the total to $3,500. Figuring the cost of all funerals, including the cost of the grave, as conducted by an average undertaker, there is a profit of over $1,500 to the funeral director having the contract. The undertaker receives $2.50 for each body claimed by and delivered to the Anatomical society, so he can lose nothing by handling such bodies."
