I did find some interesting information on this family in the History of Lewis, Clark, Knox & Scotland Counties, MO. that I had overlooked thanks to a lady at the local library. However, I did have a great find this summer. My family line is traced in the book "Alexander and Phillips with Allied Families" printed in 1982. It turns out I have been searching for the wrong person, my next generation is William Phillips not Richard Dabney Phillips. William's father was Jeremiah Phillips. The Dabney Phillips we were both searching is mentioned in passing in this book, the writer being of the opinion and so am I that he was connected to my family somehow ... maybe a cousin.
