I also plan a trip to Clark Co. - that may be a busy place this summer! I was there a few hours last August. The people in the library and court house were very nice. The historical society was closed that day. Believe me, a few hours goes by very quickly! If someone could post the hours of the library and historical society, it would be very helpful in my planning. I am looking for Wilson, Glasgow, Bishop, Pherigo and Wright, probably beginning in 1840's or so. Are there other Clark Co. researchers with these names? Happy travels to all and thanks for any information anyone sends.
The Lewis County Historical Soc. and Genealogical Library has a great deal of information on northeast Missouri families. They are located at 112 N. 4th St., Canton, MO, and are usually open from about 9 to around 3, Mon. thru Fri. It is run by volunteers, and before making a trip, you should call to make sure someone will be there. Their phone: 573-288-5713. I believe they also have a fax: 288-3513. Good Luck! It has been some years since I've researched at Kahoka, but the staff at the courthouse has always been friendly and helpful...You should also stop at the city library and the historical society, which, if I remember correctly, is across the street from the library. Be sure you don't go on Truman's birthday - it is a holiday in Missouri and nothing will be open. There are several restaurants, can't help on places to stay, but there should be some local people on the list who will respond. There is also a library in Canton that has a lot of northeast Missouri stuff, (or there used to be) if you have the time. Happy hunting. Connie Street ckcasey@louisacomm.net

Can anyone tell me where James B WITHERSPOON and his wife, Catherine lived in Clark Co, MO. They are buried in Frazee Cemetery. Their children were Amanda Jane, Mary M, Leora Ellen (who was married to John COOVERT), Matilda A, Sophia Bell, and Perry Sylverter. They had another son, but I have no idea what his name was or when he died, probably as an infant. Any help would be great. Thanks, Sue
Can anyone tell me where the Day Cemetery is located in Winchester? Twila
Wells Family Cemetery, Washington Township, Section 36, on the old Wells place, five miles southeast of Fairmont, Missouri on Highway D. From the book "Cemetery Inscriptions of Clark County, Missouri by Dunlap & Walker" (c) 1974 Take State Rout "A" south from Fairmont to route "A" and "D" junction. (Section 35) A and D junction is about .25 miles into Section 35. A county road is to the left at about .75 mile into section 35, also a county road to the right about .25 mile in section 36. In section 35 the map I have has three homes (two on north side of road and one on south side of road) State Route D. Section 36 has three homes all off rout D. I am seeking information on Roswell Shellhous who lived in Peakville during the Civil War period. He was living there in the 1860 census with wife Rosetta, son Roswell Alfred and daughters Roxanne and Amanda. He and his son ran a store in Peakville and evidently they had problems because of their beliefs on the war. Does anyone know anything about this family? They left the area around 1865 and moved to Van Buren County, IA. Amanda may have married and stayed in Clark County because she did not live with her parent's in the 1870 census in Van Buren Co, IA. Thanks so much. Glynice
David Pryor Norton, b. 1847 in Grant Co., KY, and died 1915/16 in Clark (?) Co., MO. He moved to Winchester, Clark Co., MO with his twin brother, William Perry Norton. He is buried in the Day Cemetery in Jackson Township near his brother, William. Who was David's wife?? There are Clark Co., MO marriage records as follows: 1) Susan Goben, recorded on 21 Jan 1872 (Clark Co. Marriage Records, Vol. 2, edited by Dunlap & Walker, p. 62) and 2) Mary C. Fellows, recorded 6 Nov 1886 (Vol. 3, p. 102). Were either of these women his wife? The records give only his first name, and not his middle name or initial. Also, would like to know about his descendants. Ben in Ft. Worth, TX
Wolfe Cemetery Des Moines Twp. Section 8 St. Francisville, MO Cemetery Inscriptions of Clark County, MO Compiled by Dunlap & Walker Page 140 SMALLWOOD, Hezekiah, d Sept 8, 1869, ages 70 yrs, 1 mo, 18 days Is it possible to get an obit from 1869? Think this is a possibility for my GG GF Hezekiah SMALLWOOD who was born in 1799 NC and married to Elizabeth BROUGHTON in 1822 KY. I have them on the 1860 Schuyler County Census, but if he died in Clark in 1869, perhaps Elizabeth SMALLWOOD would be on the 1870 Census. She was born in KY about 1807 so she would be around 63. Another thought is that their youngest daughter Eliza born in 1852 in KY married Francisco STUMP in 1867 MO so their family should be on 1870 and 1880 Clark Census? Perhaps widow Elizabeth is living with them as they were having STUMP children in Clark from 1868 to 1880. Thanks for helping me. Regards, Mary Ann (Smallwood) Bolton Mililani, HI
