Jean, I have noticed those regional ties as well. One thing that has intrigued me is why Christian County families moved into Arkansas after the Civil War. I am thinking about the Patterson, Keltner, and Leach familes who went to Carroll County, Arkansas--all had been "unionists" Given Carroll County's location, adjacent to the southern Missouri border(I think south of Stone and Barry Counties), Carroll probably experienced as much turmoil during the War as Christian County had. So what was the draw? Another thing, I am noticing is the role that "regionalism" seemed to play. For very practical reasons, families that knew each other on the east coast and had lived in close proximity often went west together--en masse, serially, or both and settled in the same area. One of late 19th century books by a Springfield, Missouri, settler contains an account describing how the emigrants from various states could be distinquished by their dress, teams pulling their wagons, etc. suggesting a real awareness of "origins and possibly family". In addition, within their new western home, they seem to have interacted primarily with folks who were from their original area. Often this practice was continued well into the twentieth century.
