    3. Well apparently these "ROLL CALL" requests had their desired effect and intentions. Several of the lists I belong to were "hit" by someone pushing for a "roll call" which tied up Rootsweb's email servers. Apparently enough so, that when I sent the below messages Friday, they still have not came through, so I am combining the two, and sending as one. Again. JC ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Cochran <jimeco@classicnet.net> To: MOCHRIST-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri Jan 6 9:32 Subject: Fwd: SURNAME ROLL CALLS List members: Usually, this info is requested either by the list administrator, or someone asking (off the list) the list administrator to call for one. It has been awhile since we've had one, and I wish someone would have asked me to do this, (OFF LIST) before it started, and gotten out of control Number one reason, is there is some guidelines that I would prefer to be followed, most importantly to CHANGE the subject line to something else, that shows who/what you are researching, similar to this format: ELLINGSWORTH - ROLL CALL That way, anyone not researching that line, can skip it, and feel safe, knowing that there is probably nothing pertaining to what they need in it, and not have to scan through dozens of emails, like there is going through here now. Another reason, is that this seems to be something started as a practical joke, or an attempt to sabotage Rootsweb's internet bandwitdh, as it appears to be going around all the lists, tieing them all up. Right now, I've only internet access through my job, so I try to keep a low profile, but if there is any problems or suggestions, please don't hesitate to ask me OFF LIST at either jimeco @ classicnet.net or at jimeco @ juno.com. On another note, I wouldn't, and I don't believe any other list administrator would delete someone for non-participation. If you are more comfortable lurking, than by all means, just sit back and lurk! One more reason something of this nature should be done by the list admin. instead of all nilly-willy. Because of these "roll call" messages being passed around Rootsweb lists, it is haveing the same effect as a virus would, by slowing down communications. For example, the messages I posted this morning, to various county and surname lists, has yet to come back to me. I assume it is because of the heavy email volume these roll calls have made on Rootsweb servers. Regards, and best of 2006 to all of you.
